Episode 263 — Kids' TV Shows

Recommended Posts

Andrew Ti and this week’s special guest JJ Wienkers finish the week off by figuring out if kids’ TV shows like Ni-Hao, Kai-Lan & Dora the Explorer are actually helping young children appreciate various cultures or if they are perpetuating certain racial stereotypes. As always, leave us a message about anything you think is racist at (323) 389-RACE.

Dora and Kai-lan are pretty basic Nick Jr. kids' shows with a little bit of language / culture thrown in. My kids are learning Spanish words from Dora, and some of the books describe some Mexican foods or holiday traditions in a pretty "simplified for pre-schoolers" way.

The one thing I noticed - which I'm sure was a decision made in some Nickelodeon board room - is that Dora herself has WAY lighter skin than anyone in her family (who are rarely featured). Now, I guess it could have been that they had Dora first and later someone said "she needs a family - let's make them actually look Mexican for once," but it's definitely a thing.
