Homework: Welcome to the Dollhouse (1995)

I had to watch Happiness 5 times in a row while doing a final paper on this movie for a film class. Writing about this in a critique while refraining from giving my opinion proved more uncomfortable than the repeat viewings. Welcome to the Dollhouse is pretty easy to watch by comparison.
  2. I get that Cannibal Holocaust vs Working Girl wouldn't be interesting to discuss but not sure I'm interested at all in this idea as the basis of an episode. Would rather just hear about a movie they haven't discussed before.

EPISODE 97 - A Face In The Crowd

Adam Ant didn't drink or do drugs. Or at least he didn't at that time. The song was written in response to people who thought that was strange I guess.

    Kids

Also, I love idea of a podcast episode titled Kids vs. Bully

    Kids

I really like Wassup Rockers but that one seems to get little recognition.

    Kids

Yeah only if it's versus Bully. I think Bully would win. It's weird how low his movies are rated on rotten tomatoes. He was just on the Bret Easton Ellis podcast this week.

Let's Stray Away from Geek/Genre/Gen-X Faire, Just for a Moment

I don't believe there's been a Kurosawa film nominated yet. I love Russian Ark for what it accomplished, but I don't think I'd want to hear a discussion about the movie. I don't really know if it's that great. I watched it once and was amazed at what they pulled off on a single take and it obviously had some influence on Birdman. However, I've never had any desire to rewatch it.

    Wings of Desire

I have the bluray at home as a Netflix rental. Was going to watch it soon.

    Loud Theater Audiences

Well this is only good if the audience is responding correctly. I think this is why I didn't like the Blair Witch Project. Anytime it was supposed to be scary, one guy in the back of the theater started laughing. It was a loud ridiculous laugh throughout the movie. Maybe with a different audience I would have had a different reaction. Still, when I tried watching it a second time on DVD, it just seemed like a badly made boring overhyped movie.

    Ben-Hur (1959)

Well there we go. Bloodsport vs Citizen Kane. Please make this episode happen.

Homework: The King of Comedy (1982)

Haven't seen this in awhile. Looking forward to watching it again.

    The Conformist

Bernardo Bertolucci directed it but my love for this movie mostly stems from the amazing cinematography by Vittorio Storaro, who also has a canon entry from his work on Apocalypse Now. Just do a google image search for the Conformist if you have not yet seen this movie. Every shot is so well composed and beautiful. https://www.google.ca/search?q=the+conformist&client=safari&hl=en-us&prmd=ivn&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjw95_lgffOAhUKkx4KHZp7AUAQ_AUICCgB&biw=320&bih=460

    Blue Velvet vs. Mulholland Drive

Blue Velvet is my favorite Lynch film but he's always been a difficult filmmaker for me. I feel anyone approaching Lynch for the first time is going to go with the movie with an easier to follow narrative (Blue Velvet). Would that be fair to fans of Lynch's whole body of work? Mulholland Drive versus Eraserhead may be better as a versus but also difficult for newcomers to watch back to back. Perhaps a single Lynch film episode may be a better one for people to watch.

Homework: The Blair Witch Project (1999)

If I recall correctly, this film was supposed to be made by film students so the camera footage was probably shot well when they weren't running away and scared. My biggest problem with watching found footage films is that people who know how to use a camera are purposely creating a film with awful camerawork. It's painful to watch. That this movie spawned so many found footage movies makes me dislike it for that reason alone.

Homework: The Blair Witch Project (1999)

This is a terrible movie. Saw it in the theater and was just confused as to anyone thought it was real. Should a movie really be canonized just for having a clever marketing campaign? I only watched it twice.

    SCREAM

Not sure how I would vote on this, but if love to hear the conversation.

    Kevin or Kumau from DWITGAOATP

I loved Carbon Copy when I was a kid. Obviously that's not the movie they nominate.

    SLC Punk

I don't really like the movie either. Penelope Spheeris's Suburbia was always the movie that defined punk rock to me. But maybe this just depends on everyone's age and what bands they grew up on. Suburbia was before my time but we were watching that long before SLC Punk came out.

Slightly off-topic but Mel Brooks is the guest on the Maltin on Movies podcast this week.

    Clint Eastwood's filmography

I love Outlaw Josey Wales. Versus Unforgiven perhaps?

A Serious Man vs. Inside Llewyn Davis

These are 2 of their worst films. I don't get why some people love them so much.

The iron giant should be in the canon

I really love both these movies.

    Suggestion: The Matrix

Repo Man totally belongs in the Canon!

    A Concert Films Vs. Episode

Of course we could also talk about what the camera is trying to capture. Should the viewer feel like they have the best seat in the house? if we go there, we would want something a little better than just the front row. What's it like to be right on the stage with the band? Low angles (front row view making musicians not powerful and like rock gods), high angles that can capture the crowd betteror maybe level with the crowd as equals? How often do we want to see the full stage, if at all? The static camera shot from the balcony is boring as it represents the view from the cheap seats. Why do people like to spin the camera on its side and upside down? Stop that!
