Episode 68 — Over The Top: LIVE!

Was it Moynihan that pointed out (this I love) that supposing this massive arm-wrestling event has had similar grand prizes - the 5 Time unbeaten champ should have accrued approx. a half a million dollars and a trucking compound full of Kenworths by now.
I did find a self-redeeming quality - when I was a kid i thought this was the dumbest effing movie I had ever seen and even at that age could not quite figure out... so... he has to win an arm wrestling competition to ... keep his son?
From kidnappers or... huh?
Wouldn't you just phone the police?
I'm still not quite clear on this lol.. the son was being held for ransom? No? Just ... he just needed a new truck i guess?

First off, great user name!
And yes, I didn't even think about that during the movie. If this guy has half a million bucks and 5 amazing trucks which are also probably worth I don't know even how many thousands of dollars, where does it end? He needs therapy, not more arm wrestling trophies. And who is sponsoring these competitions? Is Alka-Seltzer ponying up $100k and a big rig every year?

I was really surprised, though, because the script is super dark, guys. In the first act, Hawke(s) dies of an arm-wrestling disease like cancer of the wrist and, due to an unforeseeable traffic snarl, his corpse is two hours late to his own funeral. Typical Hawke and/or Hawkes!
Also, it becomes clear that Hawke(s)'s son had changed his name for obvious reasons to something less erotic like Mike Rotch. However, he writes reviews on Amazon under the name Mike1999. They establish a B plot featuring a love interest who buys him movies, but it isn't developed in this version of the script.
As a tribute to his late father, he goes out on the arm wrestling circuit in an attempt to bring glory to the Hawke or Hawkes name. Sadly, his arm-wrestling dreams die during a hideous radius-snapping tournament scene (yikes!). In the grip of melancholy, he gives up on everything and goes into gay porn under the unsubtle nom de plume My Cock.
Just when you think all is lost, our young hero hears that a group of suspiciously burly bearded men are gathering at a truck stop somewhere for what is being billed as a "winner take all" arm wrestling tournament cum and-all-be-all of human existence. In a last ditch effort to get his life back on track, he cruises by a nearby military school and kidnaps a child to cheer him on and cry during dramatic moments. Thankfully, all the implied molestation happens off camera.
Over. The. Tippy. Tippy. Top. Four stars!

And the money I would pay to see June's look of confusion when they mentioned Stalone's multi-shirt-change...

This round is from the Rotten Tomatoes "Worst Reviewed Summer Movies" list (thanks Lando for the tip!)
It's amazing how many of those movies we have already done...

Yeah, the audience questions were fantastic on this episode. Great show all around.

Kazaam? FUCK YEAH that needs to be done!
As far as this movie goes, I would have loved it if while the happy 80s music was playing in the credits, it was a shot of the arcade kid hanging in the diner bathroom after suffering the loss to Michael and the subsequent mockery of his cronies, because that was a loose end that was left untied.
Also, to me it appeared that it was still double elimination in the finals, but Bull got disqualified as he headbutted Hawk(s) and pulled his arm up when Hawk(s) tried to go over the top, which led to the ref tying their hands together a la "Beat It."
"I'm gonna fuck the 'Mind of Mencia' out of you!" - Paul Scheer
"Fuck you, I watched this fucking movie bro!" June Diane Raphael
"If I'm holding a baby and I say 'cunt punch,' it's gonna be pretty fucking funny." - Zouks
"How's yo dick?" - Nicole Byer

It was at the time of the podcast recording. Someone probably tipped off Stallone that it was on instant and took it down because he can.

He was in a weird ass movie called Streets like two years after Over The Top, where he did a full on sex scene with Christina Applegate! He went from this to a softcore sex scene in TWO YEARS.

For years I've remembered this movie as a kidnapping story. The son was kidnapped and Stallone had to arm wrestle to get him back? Not sure why that seemed more probable to me than a man winning back his son's affection via the internationally popular sport of arm wrestling.
Amazing episode this week. Everyone was on fire! Bobby was an excellent guest - loved his "I don't care about other people's lives" comment. So funny. Continuing to love Jason and JDR's interactions like "when they go into that steakhouse" "June... June... not a steakhouse." All three hosts have been destroying with the funny recently. Excellent movie choice, too.

1. I have a feeling they kept the lid on the whole "Mike Hawk" thing on purpose as a treat for whichever audience member got to it first during the questions. There's no way such a crew would have missed that, so leaving it for the audience was magnanimous of them.
2. I have never ever thought of listening to the kids' arm-wrestling scene as a transaction between a whore, her john, and her pimp. Now I can never forget it. Jason, you are a twisted genius.
3. And you're also quite prescient. Case in point:
