EPISODE 107 — Lake Placid: LIVE!

Recommended Posts

Reading Aloud’s Nate Corddry and HDTGM All-Star Paul F. Tompkins join Paul & Jason at Largo in Los Angeles to talk all about how Lake Placid shows that nature and man cannot co-exist. They’ll cover everything from the movie not reaching 90 minutes yet feeling long, the amazing performances by the cows, Brendan Gleeson reading the stage directions, underwater bears, and more. Plus, we finally get down to the bottom of what the proper way to say Reese’s Pieces is before getting into audience Q&As!

A double dose of Paul F. Tompkins! I'm glad I get to fall asleep listening to this in a few minutes. I watched both of these movies as a kid and rewatched them for the podcast, and I just have to say: Deep Blue Sea > Lake Placid, although both have a stellar (skateboard) cast.

Holy shit. Back to back PFT and the movies were Deep Blue Sea and Lake Placid? This is literally a dream/fantasy scenario for me.

Boy oh boy, PFT podcast blitz this week.

I think calling someone 'a mental' is an expression in England, so maybe chalk that one up to failed localization.

As a Mainer, two points: It's possible Kelly was going for the charcters to be stereotypical laconic downeasters but a directing fumble had them acting emotionless. Second, while there are many black bears in the state, brown bears- like the one in the movie- are nowhere to be found.

Seriously though, no June two weeks from now and someone gets hurt. Me. In the feelings.

If NextIssue.com is like Netflix for magazines, does that mean that all of the magazines are all at least a few months old? In that case, it's like Netflix for my dentist's office.

The cow would NOT have lost to Roberto Benigni, as "Life Is Beautiful" came out the year BEFORE. He would have lost to Kevin Spacey, who was fucking wonderful in "American Beauty". Still, it's a shame that the crocodile was so discouraged that it gave up on showbiz, apparently to help raise Bridgett Fonda's kids.

Finally! With the addition of Hector Cyr I have the last piece of the puzzle for my movie! I am still working on the script, but here’s the elevator pitch:

In the not too distant future, genetically modified “smart” sharks and a race of highly evolved dinosaurs team up to destroy humanity and establish a prehistoric Utopia. They have unlocked the power of the atom and their claw/fin is on the trigger. In a world with its back against the wall, a group of highly educated Scientists will need to set aside their differences to take down this menace once and for all. Alone, they only know so much, but together, they are The Specialists: Action Scientists!

Led by intrepid doctors Nick “the Worm Guy” Tatopoulus and Ian “Dr. Chaos” Malcolm, this team--which also includes: crocodile expert Hector “Dragon-eyes” Cyr, ichthyologist, Matt “the Hoop” Hooper, and Cal Tech grad Tom “the Kid” Scoggins-- will need to pool their research together, Google a bunch of semi-interesting facts, and conclude the only solution is in the hands of a young primatologist: gorilla lothario Dr. Peter Elliott.

Will Dr. Elliott’s army of ASL fluent gorillas be enough to stem a tidal wave of shark riding, super dinosaurs? Will the doctors’ idiosyncrasies fail to synchronize? Will Scoggins decide on a Specialty? Was the answer “love” the whole time?

Find out this summer when Action will Equal Mass Times the Speed of FIGHT!…squared.

(And yes, in keeping with current movie trends, of course this will all be a part of a shared universe and will include an all-female group titled The Special-ettes: Science Harder!)

So, did Nate Corddry volunteer to do a movie written by his old boss, or did he agree to do the podcast and it being a DEK movie was a coincidence?

"WHO'S THERE?!?!" - Common Blind Person Question

That reminds me, at my theater we have glasses and headsets for the hearing and/or vision impaired (I'm fairly certain that no one has been both...) that provide captions and descriptions. I understand that most people that are going to the movies haven't had vision or hearing problems their entire lives, but some probably have, and these things aren't made with those people in mind. I know I've seen captions that read something like "Benny Hill music plays" or descriptions that say "They enter a cylinder-like spacecraft", which has to be frustrating for people that have never had the CHANCE to hear music or see a fucking spaceship, much less a cylinder, in their lives.

Also, Werner Herzog did a fantastic Paul F. Tompkins on this show.

They need to face/off against Sebastian "Hollow Man" Caine (already pictured , look closely...) and his group of villainous science guys in the sequel!

Greetings from the UK.

On the podcast you guys sounded really surprised Brendan Gleeson says to Oliver Platt "I think you are a mental" (or something along those lines). I was very confused, as in the UK, that's a completely normal turn of phrase.

One who is "mental" (verb) is "a mental" (noun). Its a short hand term for "a mental patient", one who resides in a mental institute.

Also, on another note, I was watching Community earlier this week and saw a very handsome man who I didn't recognise... until he started shouting excitedly and I realised it was the one and only Jason Mantzoukas.

I sure hope Jake Cordry had permission to use the trademarked catchphrase "What Up? What Up?"™. Otherwise, Haze and Shane are gunna be steamed.

Going into the third act, Platt's character suddenly and inexplicably declares that they need to capture this crocodile instead of killing it. Pullman and Gleeson are both understandably dubious. In order to allay their concerns, Platt tells them that if anything goes awry they can hop in the trucks and get away because the crocodile is, "not that fast..."

Now this is a fantastic decision on the screenwriter's part and I couldn't be behind it more! You see, if there is one thing an audience member watching an action/horror/creature feature doesn't want it's for the film to heighten the tension in any way. I wish even more movies would make the bold decision to neuter their antagonist in the final minutes of the movie.

"You want me to act as bait so you can catch this serial killer?"

"Yes, but don't worry. There's no danger. We've discovered the killer is missing a leg, so if things get crazy, just walk away at a semi-brisk pace."

See? Isn't that so much better?

Ex Machina sounds good but alas as a Minnesotan I once again have to suck a big fat robot dick. My knees are starting to hurt.

I hate to disagree with Jason, but he is pronouncing Reese's Pieces wrong. As evidence, I present the famous Reese's Pieces

. HB Reese was the creator of the Reese's peanut butter cup, and the pieces line seems named specifically to rhyme with Reese's. I know several people who pronounce it the way Jason does (peee-ceees) and I would love to know how and why this developed. It seems to be a regional thing. There was a BuzzFeed article about it recently.

Gotta love it when the podcast is longer than the movie itself! Especially when the movie was this stinker!

Huh. I don't think Lake Placid is a bad movie.....

EDIT: After listening to the episode, I am almost convinced. Good show, guys :)

When I heard "Lake Placid" was the movie my brain thought "Cape Fear" and I thought it was a weird choice because Cape Fear is a pretty good movie. So maybe that's what happened to other people and that's why they were defending it before the episode. Because there is no way that anyone actually enjoyed this.

Sorry folks but I really like this movie. I think it is a lot of fun and while some criticisms are legit (Pullman and Fonda's lackluster performances in particular) I have a good time watching it.
