EPISODE 113 — Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze: LIVE!

Recommended Posts

science corner.

i did my best to search through the other posts to make sure that i wasn't repeating something someone else already said, but my cat is asleep on my arm so instead of doing the sensible thing, i'm trying to balance my slippery computer on my sternum while doing everything with my non-dominant hand.

all reptiles have lungs (and not gills) so turtles need to surface in order to breathe.

but you'd think they'd be able to hold their breath longer, right?

weeeeeird.. i did a cursory wikipedia search and found some weird turtle/tortoise respiratory facts/"facts":

  • "...some species have modified their cloaca to increase the area for gas exchange". <-- they exhale through their butts?
  • they don't really have a diaphragm, and because of the varying rigidity of turtle shells, it sounds like there's some kind of internal Rube Goldberg machine at work.. some of sets of muscles work like our diaphragm.. but other turtles basically need to retract/protract their legs in order to breathe? some maybe need to be walking for this to worki think i'm misunderstanding that part, while green sea turtles can't breathe while "walking".. so when you see video of a turtle dragging itself on a beach to lay eggs it's holding it's breathe while moving and can only breathe when resting..
  • and something about most reptiles not having a separation between thei nasal and oral cavities.. so the Turtles wouldn't likely be able to talk (breathe) while eating pizza. i think.

WHAT?

some turtles can actually breathe through their butts!?

apparently it was most likely breast cancer.

This was some serious knowledge dropped! I have to admit that I am definitely not an expert on turtles (or any reptiles for that matter) so I didn't know the extent of their ability to breathe underwater. I just knew what I have seen from the turtles that live in the pond by my house ahaha. But I have to completely agree that turtles should still be able to hold their breath for longer!!!

And that article about Michelangelo was so interesting! That brings up so many points I have never heard discussed among art historians!

Even when I was little I wondered why Bebop and Rocksteady weren't in the TMNT movies, and i didn't get an answer until after i finished college and began working on the TMNT cartoon (2003 series).

Tokka and Rahzar were created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird to get around rights issues with Bebop and Rocksteady.

The reason Bebop and Rocksteady (along with Krang etc) were not in the movies is because the movie studio and even the creators of TMNT didn't have the rights to those characters and didn't want to pay to use them.

Bebop and Rocksteady were not in the original comics and were created specifically for the 87 cartoon, and were owned by the show's production company. (Krang was inspired by an alien race in the comics called the Utrom, but was still considered off limits in this case).

It wasn't until recently (after a long legal battle) that the rights for these characters were won by Mirage/Peter Laird. Shortly after the win a direct to DVD animated movie "Turtles Forever" was created which featured Bebop, Rocksteady and Krang - and even had cameos by Tokka and Rahzar.

Shortly after the movie aired on TV Nickelodeon bought the Ninja Turtles from Mirage.

The shows original theme song is still owned by the 87 cartoon production company (which is why it wasn't in any of the movies despite being super popular) and they won't part with it without a ton of money - so while you may hear some sound alike stuff in the current Nick show you'll probably won't hear the original song used for a long time in any new media.

It always seemed strange to me that they made Tokka a turtle because A) The heroes are turtles and B) Slash the evil ninja turtle already existed at that point. You literally have every animal in the world to choose from or existing characters from the comics (like the alligator Leatherhead).

This lovely young adult film actress was such a TMNT fan that she chose the stage name "April O'Neil," and then showed up to comic con one year dressed like this.

I'm assuming some nerds spontaneously combusted.

Yeah not surprisingly there is a big crossover between porn companies and nerd pop culture. There was a great interview with Dana D'earmond on the Nerdist and she talked about how she was in a parody of Star Trek Next Generation and it wasn't done as a parody but rather a regular episode that just showed boning, and an X-Files parody that they made as if it was the following season of the show. Fortunately there has not been a TMNT parody to my knowledge, because those scenes would be utterly terrifying though there are numerous comics online featuring the turtles just ravaging April, search Akabur as the artist if you want a new fetish or nightmare depending on your preference.

Thomas Middleditch mentioned this on the latest Doug Loves Movies. And I immediately had to share with you guys. No judgement.

Holy fuck that made me sooo sooo SAD. Not just that she's so deeply and openly obsessed but that she's surrounded by just dismissive family that think shes a freak. (To be fair when she slathered a pizza in mayonnaise I absolutely sided with her bullying family.)

I was going through the back catalog and listened to this one. Amidst the 9/11 references and June not thinking the turtles at all resemble turtles, there was discussion of Vanilla Ice's "song", "Ninja Rap". They talked about how he allegedly didn't rip anyone off like he did with Queen. This one isn't as blatant, but consider me skeptical.

I listened to Ice's "song" and during the walk down memory lane, something struck me as oddly familiar. While it doesn't have the same theft as Ice did with the bass line from "Under Pressure", take a listen to "Ninja Rap" and then check out Sugarhill Gang's "Apache" for comparison. Even if he didn't swipe "Go Ninja" from the Knicks, this makes his two biggest hits extremely unoriginal ripoffs of good songs. Sampling? Sure, but he sucks as an artist.

Ninja Rap

Apache

More bullshit from a bullshit movie.

I about shat watching this video. For one, with that diet and "life", she can't be alive now. I mean, cholesterol aside, she's probably inhaling nasty fumes from those masks. And if she did live long enough to realize that she'd wasted years and thousands of borrowed dollars on TNMT stuff, surely she offed herself. Second, how the hell do you spend $5k on karate lessons and only make it to blue belt? She must be really bad.

And yeah, her family is a bunch of assholes (brother comparing her to a pet), but they're total enablers.

Vanilla Ice didn't rip off Sugarhill Gang because Sugarhill Gang was covering a surf band called The Shadows, playing a song by Jerry Lordan. Which is, whatever, because hip hop is founded on sampling other artists. Vanilla Ice tried to claim his song was different so he could avoid paying royalties to Brian May and Queen, that's what was lame about it.

Sugarhill Gang was cool because samplers hadn't been invented yet, and so their producer said "How about instead of a DJ, we just hire a band to play eight bars of Chic over and over?" It was a genius move.

I still haven't forgiven Vanilla Ice for lying about his age on the Cool As Ice episode and making me embarrass myself when I repeated it to a friend.
