Episode 50 - Santa Fe Art Gallery

Recommended Posts

Paul F. Tompkins welcomes everyone using any of the five senses to the 50th episode of SPONTANEANATION! This week, Paul’s special guest is Matt Besser of improv4humans! They chat about who would be the ideal sibling, mischievous imaginary friends, and Matt's dad's philosophy of living the high life. Paul is then joined by Craig Cackowski, Hal Lublin, and Amanda Lund to improvise a story set at a Santa Fe Art Gallery. And as always, Eban (only the best) Schletter scores it all on piano!

SPONTANEANATION LIVE returns to Largo on Saturday, April 2nd! Paul's special guest will be Grant-Lee Phillips! Get your tickets now: bit.ly/SPONT416

Can't listen to this yet, but please tell me that Matty B takes part in the improvisation?

At 37:28 you'll find out!

My heart SANK when Paul said Besser doesn't participate in the improv. I really hope he comes back on the show, that's such a shame.

I'm a little sad there wasn't an acknowledgement of Eban playing "Everybody wants to be a cat" from Disney every time a cat was mentioned. It made me giggle every time I heard it.

It was devastating to hear of the improv mix-up with Matt Besser but this was still a great episode! All the bizarre ghost stories were amazing and I laughed so hard at Peter Two Horses mercilessly roasting PFT about not thinking the roller coaster accident would be national news that I nearly became a ghost myself.

This just means we can have the I4H/Spont crossover I've always dreamed of since I was a little 50-episodes-ago year-old!

From I4H we get Matt Besser and Sean Conroy. From Spont we get Cackowski and little Janet Varney. And then what we get is a good ol' time.

This was still a great episode, though! Besser's interview was wonderfully insane.

I never had imaginary friends either, but all of the talk about them just brought up memories of crying my eyes out at the end of Drop Dead Fred.

This is one of the best episodes ever even if Matty B didn't play in the improv. Great.

Hal Lublin has the best evil laugh voice ever!

I was sincerely podcast-shocked (bc it's all relative; nbd in the grand scheme of things, of course) at Paul's disclaimer that Besser didn't participate in the improv. I actually stopped the podcast and put on CBB as a way to digest that info. Coming back to the improv section of Spont now, and it is really good! Fingers crossed that Matty B comes back sooner than later. I love a PFT/Matty B improv crossover like last week's i4h (and the other previous eps in which PFT has partaken), their various CBB appearances together, and of course The Travel Bug with August Lindt.

EDIT: And man, Matt's and Paul's conversation was great, and I did enjoy hearing Matt laughing during the improv (as I always enjoy hearing Matty B laughing off mic). I also realized that next episode's guest will be getting a Matt question, and I am greatly looking forward to finding out what he asked, considering he regularly must entertain many questions/suggestions/etc by being so entrenched in the improv world. "What's your favorite food?" probably won't be the question. Nothing about pineapple either. haha

I'm sure Matt would have been great in the improv, but honestly, I got as much enjoyment out of Paul's explanation and picturing it happen in progress as I would have gotten out of it.

After hearing about Gourley's intolerance for ghost talk, I appreciate the Poltergeist episode of IWTT even more.

I really love getting a closer look at Besser's personal life. I've listened to every single I4H and I learned more about him in this episode and in Gabrus' "High and Mighty" episode than I have from all the I4H. Is it weird that I want to hear about how his daughter is doing? Honestly Besser's like the best podcast host out there, and one of the best podcast guests out there.

Seriously if anyone hasn't, listen to his episode on "High and Mighty". It's hilarious and fascinating.

Since nobody here has mentioned her yet, I just wanted to say how much I love when Amanda Lund is on an episode. She's so enthusiastic about any scenario and makes PFT laugh even more than usual. She always takes things to a credibly weird place, if that makes sense.

Here here on the Fun Buns praise! She's great. Everyone should check out The Complete Woman? w/ Marabel May. It's really funny in the same comedic vein as Superego, and if you're not able to subscribe to Howl for a month to give it a listen, Amanda's and Maria Blessucci's ep of James Bonding where they discuss Casino Royale very emphatically and at length is also pretty darn good! Amanda and Maria love that movie, dare I say, more than the Matts.

The miscommunication was even more disappointing because of all the openings they were giving Matt to jump in on the story. What's with this guy's non-improvin' gabooch?!

Add me to the Funbuns appreciation train! It's hard to beat "I ate a whole roll of quarters" as memorable SPONT moments go. I recently got around to watching Ghost Ghirls, and her character's ditzy charm was delightful! Great showcase for Amanda and Blasooch, with lots of appearances from familiar comedy faces including PFT and other SPONT guests.

Now that the double Cack Attack married couple episode precedent has been set, I hope there are more joint Gourley/Funbuns episodes with them as an engaged/married couple. Consider me a shipper!

I thought the Gourley, McConville eps were the first married couple episodes?
