Episode 142 - The Phantom: LIVE! (w/ Eliza Skinner, Ed Brubaker)

Recommended Posts

Thanks, Cameron H.

Oh my god I just laughed so hard I snorted. I was gonna respond at first and say that the condolences were a few months too late for my ended relationship but holy moly that was a perfect response lol.

I couldn't agree with your diciest part of the movie more! I hadn't mentioned it yet because it's such a huge spoiler but everyone and their mothers have been talking about Harley and Joker so I wanted to unload all of that too.

Holy shit that was some serious messed up shit. I kept wondering why they hadn't introduced Slipknot because I was so excited that they actually cast Adam Beach because he's amazing... and then I found out three minutes later why...

Also can we talk about how it was the biggest bull shit that Common's only part was to leer at Harley and then get shot by Joker???

(I'm still sending you internet hugs btw)

That made me literally LOL'ed.

Nah, that's cool, it let me get some snark out.

Huzzah! My plan to get everyone LOL-ing in the face of tragedy worked out perfectly.

Correction:

The Jim Henson Creature Shop didn't make Muppets at this time. The Muppet Workshop did, although they merged in 2004. The Creature Shop was meant to develop more lifelike creatures like the ones in Labyrinth or The Dark Crystal as well as effects. Maybe not surprisingly, on the Muppet wiki, The Phantom is the only credit they have listed for "costume effects."

Omission:

When during the long line of Phantoms did they decide to use guns? Sure, maybe rudimentary firearm technology existed when the first Phantom came about, but there had to one guy along the line who decided that 2 semi-automatic pistols would be a good aid in his anti-pirate crusade. It's not really established if Phantoms were ever opposed to lethal force.

2nd Omission:

If Quill took the Phantom's belt after he killed him, why can he not make the obvious logical conclusion that it's a different guy? Does he think he's a Ghost Who Walks who also magically regenerates leather products.

Yeah he was a dead man walking. It was unfortunate.

The soundtrack must've cost a fortune and they should've spent that money so much better. To throw Bohemian Rhapsody at the end felt like such an afterthought.

A couple brought a literal baby to the 4:30 show and they sat close to the front. Super cute and surprisingly kept it together for the majority of the movie but everyone, myself included, stared the mother down as she and the baby left the second time. I was more focused on the father who didn't get up once.

I'm really surprised that they didn't copy Guardians of the Galaxy and give the soundtrack a title like Bitch-Ass Jamz Vol. Death, or something.

Also--and I know I'm being pedantic here--I don't like the name Suicide Squad. The word suicide in a military context suggests free will (soldiers volunteer for suicide missions, soldiers choose to join dangerous units). But I guess Coerced Squad doesn't have the same edgy ring to it.

The music cues were so on the nose that I was trying to figure the antonym of subtext. Only could come up with text but feel it was more obvious than that.

It felt like they wrote some scenes around using specific songs. That seems to work for Quentin Tarantino but these people ain't Tarantino.

One thing that's REALLY pissing me off is movie trailers using songs that aren't in the movie.

Case in point, the Stallone movie "Bullet To The Head", they used the song "Killers" by Motorhead (RIP, Lemmy.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYPRyd9chlo

Not one single note of this amazing song was used in the movie, I liked it as it was, but having Motorhead playing whilst Sly and Jason Mamoa were fighting with axes would have been awesome.

I am so fucking hyped up for Luke Cage! I thought we were gonna have to wait till Thanksgiving like with Jessica Jones but we're getting it in less than two months and I am soooooo excited!!!

The only problem now is that they are doing Cage, Iron Fist, and Defenders, we have to wait 18 months to 2 years for the next seasons of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and the premier season of Punisher.

very quickly putting my head above the parapet .. just back from meeting the squad ... and i kinda liked it ... at least until

it turned into something like the mummy movies but it was fun. will smith is still the man, margot was great, the rest of the characters were fun too. didnt really get to see enough of the joker to tell if i liked him or not ... i'm leaning towards not, which is a pity but in a more meatier part... fingers crossed.

the enchantress and her brother were a weak point though. poor auld cara was just reduced to waving around and spouting rubbish. she was the weakest in the acting stakes too but shes still starting off iguess. overall the acting was great. i loved the bar scene, when harley came back and pretty much every second of viola.

i can see why people turned against it though but not to the extent of the hysteria of the first few days. i was really disappointed with the silliness of the enchantress and her brother. it went from a gritty fun movie to something i'm not really into. i'm hoping we don't see either of the siblings again but the scene in the credits seemed to put that hope to bed .. unless i am mistaken?

for me it's will smiths show ... i want more to see more of deadshot and flag butting heads

id watch it again.

that is all .. carry on

There is a scene when Zane reads some exposition from a very large old book. The things he reads in the book seem like nonsense though. The book is clearly old, but he says as if he's reading from the book, that the skulls have not been seen for over four centuries. When were the books written and how up-to-date is this information? It's definitely not accurate since the Jade Skull sure as fuck has been seen by what could be hundreds of thousands of children and adults in the Museum of World History.

The book uses the term "high explosive" and also gives an estimate of the power of the skulls (1000 times anything known to man), but being a book that appears to be 100+ years of age, what explosive power did they even have when it was written? When you consider the power of the atomic bombs that would come not even a decade after the timeline of this movie, Kit's heroics are pretty pointless.

Regarding Enchantress, I get why they had her in the team for a nod to comic book fans who know that magic is a weakness of Superman, but there really haven't been many magical members of the team for a while in the comics. Also as soon as I saw her dancing her weapon into existence, I had an image of Stephen Colbert dancing for the remix challenge from a few years ago.

The only romantic/sexual relationship I felt had any weight in Suicide Squad was Deadshot and Rick Flagg.

I'd watch a movie about them on their next mission. They've hooked up a few times on previous missions. After every one, Rick escorts Deadshot to see his daughter for a few hours. Flagg starts calling in favours to extend father-daughter time, maybe a Skype set up in his cell, it can only be initiated by the daughter (as the safety precaution, Flagg tells his superiors). Soon the daughter becomes interested in Flagg, he starts to sit down and the three of them work on math and science homework using military and special ops examples to make things relatable. She can see there's something between them (who doesn't at this point?)

One day, his daughter Skypes him and in the middle of it, she's kidnapped Taken-style. It's the guy who he charged double at the beginning of Suicide Squad. They get the whole squad back and this time, it's personal.

At the end, the Squad minus Deadshot and Rick get the girl, D&R kill the kidnapper, they meet at the pre-determined location. She sees Deadshot and yells for her dad. He goes running to her and they hug like never before. Rick is still standing in the doorframe, she looks up and raises her hand, gesturing for him to join them.

I just wrote Suicide Squad 2.

Hey movie lovers! I would like to give one of the best movies that I've seen a signal boost. The Franco-Polish movie, The Innocents is making the arthouse cinema rounds in the States now (a list of movie theaters that are showing the movie is here).

Here is the synopsis of the movie, which is based on true events, from its imdb page, "In 1945 Poland, a young French Red Cross doctor who is sent to assist the survivors of the German camps discovers several nuns in advanced states of pregnancy during a visit to a nearby convent."

In an earlier thread I spoke of being drawn to stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. In The Innocents we have ordinary women helping and saving each other in the aftermath of unspeakable evil. These women are incredibly strong, incredibly brave.

I have a short attention span. But the movie was so intense that not once during the the movie's 1 hour and 55 minutes run time did I wonder how much longer it will be before the movie ends. And when the movie ended, someone actually clapped. Nobody has ever clapped in Regal Arbor 8 @ Great Hills.

Keep the name of Lou de Laâge in mind. The luminous actor who plays the French doctor is Juliette Binoche's acting heir apparent.

I hope you'll go see it. (Writing about the movie makes me want to see it again. Even though I'm moving in a few days and I have tons of homework.) I want movies that are directed by women, written by women, that star mostly women, to succeed.

It's like this film was edited by a company that cobbles together movie trailers or something.

Something about Billy Zane's constant smiling and overall jovial attitude in The Phantom was really off-putting to me. Then I went back and re-watched this movie with the idea that The Phantom/Kit had special needs/was on the spectrum, and Zane's performance made perfect sense.

Think about it: decades of living on that island, and Kit's dad perhaps conceives a daughter first. They "Chinatown" and produce Kit. How else would you explain a 25-30 year-old man running around in purple tights and striped Underoos decades before cosplay is an actual thing?

The Phantom has a daughter. In fact he has twins at one point. The sister takes over when her brother is injured.

...or, rather, when her brother/son is injured.

So just to clarify is Ipswich on the South Shore?

Yes. And the next time you're driving that way with your pal Gus to Break some Bad, make sure you keep some maxi-pads in the glove compartment. If you don't, it could be a real "disaster."

Quentin Tarantino really missed his true calling in life and that is to make a podcast devoted to explaining the meaning in popular songs and movies, like he does in

and

That would be the greatest podcast EVER!!!

anyone got any more of them?

case in point: Quentin Tarantino talks about Xena

It's like Taylor Dane took a meeting with the guys from Hollywood Handbook and they were like "you know what would be a great career move for you? Becoming Bonnie Tyler. Is she avail? Last I heard she was holding out for a hero during a total eclipse or something. Somebody call her up and tell her to stop smoking for five minutes so she can write Taylor a song!"
