Episode 168.5 - Minisode 168.5

Recommended Posts

it's nearly 230am here so bear that in mind when you read this ... i just watched sharknado 5 and it's actually not bad. it's far from good but there are some fun moments in it.

so i know what you're going to ask me. is it as bad as part 4? well it turns out i can't remember anything about part 4 so i couldn't tell you but what i will say is that it's not as self aware as parts 2 and 3. it's more like part 1 in that they play it pretty straight. the first half is set mostly in london so if you don't know your british celebs you wont have a clue who most of the cameos are but that doesn't really matter because no one, apart from the main cast, lives longer than about a minute.

the shark effects are much worse than any of the previous efforts but that's because of the scale of it. it is literally global. it hops from one part of the world to another in a flash and the action keeps building. they probably had the same FX budget as any of the other installments but they had to try and do way more with it. some of it looks terrible. the second half is definitely more fun than the first and that's where all the money was spent.

there are also a few cameos in the second half that will bring a smile to any HDTGM fan. i actually laughed a few times and by the end i was enjoying it.

in saying that i am not recommending anyone watch it cause you'll probably hate it but if you're up late and need to fill 90mins you could do worse. there's a couple of bits at the end that i really want to mention but i won't spoil it.

i'm sure the gang would be able to make a great episode out of it but i'm not sure there's any point at this stage. i would like to hear paul's review though so if you're out there paul, and would like to fill a few minutes of a future mini, just an idea ... just don't blame me if you hate it.

Okay for my memory the first R rated film I saw in theaters was Lethal Weapon 3, in which i was 4 1/2, but my dad and I didn't sit through the whole thing as I got sick about 20 minutes in. Later that same year I saw The Medicine Man, starring Sean Connery. which was technically my first PG-13 film which was followed by Jurassic park the following year.

As for odd reimaginings of famous brands, did anyone else here have Meanie Babies? They were the Garbage Pail Kids version of Beanie Babies but were uber gross. I had two because very few stores sold them.

As far as age inappropriate movies go, I watched Indiana Jones and Star Wars movies since I was old enough to sit up and watch something, and those movies feature Aunts and Uncles set afire, limb dismemberment, melting Nazis, and egregious disrespect of cultural artifacts. I was just the kind of kid who was comfortable watching anything at home. In the theaters, though, my parents were really reticent. I remember asking my parents OVER AND OVER again to take me to see Robin Hood Men in Tights in theaters (I would have been nine) even though I had seen Spaceballs at home plenty of times. I know Spaceballs is PG and Men in Tights is PG-13, which is why I think the rating system is so flawed. If a kid can laugh and be comfortable with one Mel Brooks movie, is another inappropriate? That's silly. I can't remember the first R movie I saw in theaters, but I also remember my parents grumbling whenever I wanted to see one.... but then again, I watched Top Gun about as early as Star Wars and there is that big ol' love scene in that one, so I guess it got grandfathered in to my viewing purview since my Dad, being a Navy pilot, loved the shit out of it and would just play it in the background. I already exposed and thus contaminated, There was no going back. And hell, the same thing happened with Conan the Barbarian and Monty Python's Life of Brian, as I'm sure my parents thought they were over my head. The point is, viewing is inconsistent and parenting is hard, so who the fuck cares? It's just a movie. Scare you kids with a good movie and they'll fall in love with movies and they will be better people for it.

I remember these! There was a run over cat as well. I didn't have any, but I remember seeing them at the comic shop alongside (by that point very out of fashion) GPK cards and Madballs/Blurp Balls. That was a very gross time period for toys. Even one of the Yoshi's Island video game commercials was just some guy eating too much and then grossly exploding all over people? I wanted a Monster Face (like a gross Mr. Potato Head), or the toys that let you make edible gummy or rubbery plastic spiders and junk, but my mom wouldn't budge. That was probably for the best.

I was thirteen when American Beauty came out and I had a huge crush on Kevin Spacey, so I bought a ticket to Blue Streak and snuck into the theater showing AB.

Well, that's the most 1999 sentence anyone has written in a while :)

As far as movies go, my parents were weird. They were religious, and they had problems with some movies, but there never seemed to be any rhyme or reason. My mom took my sister and me to see Wayne's World in the theater when we were 11. My dad refused to let us see Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, but they took us to see On Deadly Ground when it came out a month later.

But even then, I always had my youngest uncle. He's only about 10 years older than me, so when I would go visit, he would always let me watch all the movies my parents wouldn't. He's the one that introduced me to the wonders of Ol' Jack Burton; he's the one that took me to see the Michael Keaton Batman when I was 8 (and then Arachnophobia the next year). We watched Predator, Point Break, and both Terminators with him all the time.

So I have a kind of fucked up perspective on when it's okay to show kids certain movies, I guess. Like, I used to watch movies that I probably "shouldn't" have watched, but I also knew they were works of fiction. For those of you that have been listening to Off Book, I identified strongly with the way that Jamie Denbo talked about how she knew swearing was a thing that adults did and that she wasn't supposed to do it (but, like, seriously, all kids do it when they don't think adults can hear them). Like, I knew these were adult-y type things and that I wasn't supposed to do any of that stuff, so I don't really see the difference between showing a kid Terminator versus, say, Raiders of the Lost Ark (which gave me WAY more nightmares than Terminator ever did), so long as the kid can handle it and the adult supervising makes sure the kid knows that this is all imaginary shit they shouldn't be doing. I'm not saying go show your 4-year-old 9 1/2 Weeks or anything. But I think a lot of parents get a bit crazy about what content kids consume when there are FAR worse things they should be wary of (e.g., casual racism is more of a problem to me than, say, violence or nudity).

But then again, I don't have kids and don't ever plan to. So my opinion might not count for much.

I remember the first M-rated movie I saw was when I was 8 or 9, when Crocodile Dundee came out. Now, growing up in Australia, that movie was the national birthright: I'm pretty sure there are still pictures of Paul Hogan on the front of our passports. So, even though my parents were always very strict about not seeing M-rated movies, the national jingoism that Croc Dundee elicited made all arguments moot, and I'm pretty sure that I (along with every other man, woman and child) saw that thing at least twice in the cinema.

They announce them on Facebook and Twitter about a week beforehand usually.

i'm struggling to think at what ages i saw what movies ... i can't remember any specific movie that was an "omg i can't believe my parents are letting me watch this!". i grew up when vhs wasn't really an affordable thing but once we got one i saw alot of the classic 80s action movies that were probably over 18's. i remember watching predator with my brother (older) and my mother on a night when my dad was working and having to hide behind a cushion when the monster came on screen. i also remember being about 10 minutes into the hitcher and my dad coming into the room and turning it off. probably a wise decision.

he didn't always get it right though. my aunt and uncle visited with my cousins one christmas. my cousins were both under 10 at the time and they were acting up so my dad decided to put on one of my dvd's for them. he came out of the front room and this is how the conversation went:

dad "that will keep them quiet for a while"

me "that's good. which dvd did you put on?"

dad "i don't know what it was ... what was it called?? ... oh, bad santa"

me "hahahah, we'd better turn that off dad ..."

it was fairly easy for my parents to monitor what we were watching. we only had one tv and 2 channels. then video came out and then the multi-channel (you call it cable). but once we got a tv in our rooms that was it. they lost most of their control. but we were well into our teens by then. i pity parents these days. with everything available on phones it must be near impossible to control kids viewings. i've got no problem with porn, as long as everyone's of age and consenting, but it's definitely adult content. it can be damaging, especially to young brains. i mean we all probably found some magazines in the woods or watched a porno or two before we should have but the amount of content out there now and the ease of access must terrify parents. and even if you put some controls on your own kids tech you can't do anything about their friends phones/tablets .. i mean imagine if you had a kid this year. what kind of technology will they be using in 10 years??? not trying to scare anyone or anything .. cough .. Cameron H .. cough .. Paul S ...

I saw 'Up Pompeii' at 8 and that was a 15. But I seen the Carry Ons before so my folks were pretty okay with that kind of humour even though there's a straight up 10 minute orgy about 20 minutes in. They also let me watch 'Trains, Planes and Automobiles' but fast forwarded through the Rent-A-Car scene. Turns out objectifying women and group sex they were fine showing me but the F-bomb was a no-no.

Is there an episode 169 thread

Not until the episode drops next Friday. If you want to discuss the movie (in a spoiler free way), you can do it here; or you can look it up in the Bad Movie Reccomendations thread and really get into it there.

it's a bit quiet here this week so i'm gona throw this out here now rather than wait till wednesday ...

i watched "doomed! the untold story of rodger cormans fantastic four". you've probably heard of it or seen it. here's the trailer:

i actually really enjoyed the doc. everyone involved with making the movie really put their hearts into it. i know it's a one sided view of it but they really got shafted.

anyway, i was just wondering if anyone has watched the unreleased movie. is it worth watching. i'm sure it's been covered on other podcasts but is it worth the HDTGM treatment? it can't be any worse than the star wars holiday special... or the garbage pail kids for that matter .. and there's a pretty good copy of it on youtube so it's widely available ... again, unlike the garbage pail kids. or is it just too easy a target?

I watched both the doc and the movie recently. This was my Letterboxd review:

It isn't as terrible as you might think, but it's not as good-bad as you'd want it to be either. Its greatest crime is that it's kind of boring. However, that being said, they capture the tone pretty well. The newer F4 movies could have done a lot worse than use this movie as a storyboard.

I watched the full movie on YouTube,

Hopefully that works for you! It's worth checking out even if it's not worth sitting through.

Here's my review for Doomed:

Quite possibly the most depressing superhero movie since Catwoman. The saddest part of all is the cast and crew's insistence that it could still be released in some format today and make "millions." Oh, honey...no.

Drinking Game: Anytime someone says, "We poured our blood, sweat, and tears..." or "I think that's when I started to realize..." take a shot.

I will say this: the cast do a pretty great job. You can tell that they aren't phoning it in. The only person I remember thinking was a little off was the guy who played Ben Grimm. To me, he played it a little too much like an "aww, shucks" milk drinking, non-swearing, Clark Kent-type. Maybe this was to juxtapose it with his angst after becoming The Thing (in fact, I'm sure this what the we're going for), but it really didn't work for me.

I saw Fantastic Four sometime before the Jessica Alba/Chris Evans version came out. My memory is pretty close to Cameron's review. It looks as cheap as it is but I still liked it okay. It's arguably the best Fantastic Four movie yet.

I wasn't aware of the documentary. I'll have to check it out.

I'm about 20 minutes into this one and am liking it so far, but I will recommend the documentary on Amazon about the making of Pet Sematary called Unearthed and Untold. It's not like other making of documentaries about infamous flops like Doomed or Lost Souls, but it is pretty detailed in how the much work went into making that film and how involved the Maine town where the film was shot was involved with making the film. Pretty interesting watch if you enjoy Stephen King's books or movies.

We are way overdue for another bad comic superhero movie getting covered on HDTGM. A double feature of Roger Corman and Josh Trank's FF movies would make for a perfect live show pairing. Because they both need to be covered. I've seen the Corman one three times in my life and The Jeweler alone deserves a lot of the discussion.

Holy shit, there was almost a CGI remake of this made in 2013 produced by Michael Eisner and directed by Oscar nominated short film director PES. Why the fuck would they think this film warranted a remake?

I know the board skews younger but did anyone else collect GPK cards when they were kids?

I remember having the first and second runs, full sets each, before giving them away in elementary school.

The drunk one was always my favorite -- I obviously had no conception of drunkenness at the time.
