Episode 74 — Sklarbro Mixtape 2011

Recommended Posts

We're breaking the formula this week to bring you some of the best indie rock of 2011 as decided by The Sklar Brothers, Jonah Ray, and Matt Price. Jonah and Matt are amazing comedians with awesome taste in music who join us to meander through the indie rock hits of the year while touching on stories of bad auditions, great concerts, embarrassing restaurant experiences, and tales of fatherhood. Happy Holidays!

New Dads with No Kids
or
Casio Play-dough

Both sound like phenomenal band names.

And the swingin' utters? Hell yes, "Kick It Over" is a great song.

Ooh I wanna do mine too!

(not in order...)

1 Jens Lekman- "Waiting for Kirsten"
2 The Alabama Shakes- "Hold On"
3 Childish Gambino-"Freaks & Geeks"
4 Nikki Lane- "Gone Gone Gone"
5 Mayer Hawthorne- "A Long Time"

And yes, being the music lover I am, this episode made me a very very very happy lady.

(good call on the Mayer, too, @Cyrus!)

I think that the Shakes are going to make it....I know they're playing some shows in London & sold it out or were totally going to sell it out. Pretty cool for a little band from the middle of Alabama.

Good lists and I really enjoyed this podcast. Don't know how I missed out on that O'Brother song/album Felix Falcon mentioned.

My top 5 for the year would probably be:

The Antlers - I Don't Want Love
Cold Cave - Confetti
Bon Iver - Holocene
Jessica Lea Mayfield - Our Hearts Are Wrong
Kyle Andrews - Make Me Feel Human

If anyone is interested, I put a playlist on Spotify of my favorite tracks from over 150 albums released in 2011.

Hey, does anybody have the lists down that they could post, I listened to it in the car and now I can't remember a lot of the bands.

I bought the Alabama Shakes EP after hearing it on the show. I love it!

My top pick is probably Mister Heavenly's album Out Of Love:

Former Hot Water Music singer Chuck Ragan performing "Nomad by Fate" off of 2011's 'Covering Ground' live in a German Parking lot...?

Thank you, Jenny, that was very helpful! I'm obsessed with that weird collabo with Soulja boy, Matt and Kim, and Andrew WK.

@dan Is it weird that I've liked Chuck Ragan casually for a few years now (an ex got me into him) but I've never seen what he looks like? Thought so.

@Ryan No problem...glad to be a help. =) That Soulja Boy/M&K/AWK track isn't on Spotify but I want to say it was a Converse project maybe...?
