Queen of the Damned (2002)

I know it might be in bad taste considering Aaliyah, but this movie was so comically bad for a major production that I honestly was cracking up through the entire thing. The acting and cinematography was so jarring and awkward, and just .... bad.

It was massively over-hyped too. I always found Ann Rice rather messy as an author whose grand ideas always suffered from long tracks of nothing in the middle of her work. The first 100 and last 100 pages are great but there's always a pile of slog through chapters.. and the movie felt like a lot of those parts weighed even heavier.

It was a shame that Aaliyah never got to prove herself beyond her early, ill advised performance. You imagine they knew they needed someone with credibility, who is not unattractive, for the leads but they thought of little else.

I've come to learn that people who read the book, hated this movie.

And people who haven't read the book, liked this movie.

So much of the book was taken out. I think Anne Rice can make books that would be great movies, Interview with a Vampire stands as a good example.

Please do me a favor, if you use this movie please be generous to Aaliyah. My theroy is she would have gone a great job if tragedy haven't struck.

Bump. This movie is streaming on HBO and it is fan fucking tastic. A vampire becomes lead singer in a Korn style band.

It's a shame Aaliyah died when she did. I was just waiting for that restraining order to expire so she and I could finally be married.

You may have dusted yourself off but you weren't able to try it again.

This is another horrible movie that I genuinely love.

Nothing better than Aaliyah and Stuart Townsend having vampire sex while the Deftones play. The rest of the movie is barely watchable but I could watch those two all day long.

I have very special feelings for this movie since I spent the summer of 2002 watching this movie literally six times a day (I was 11). On the 100th time watching, I realized that the credits said "Based on The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice," and I freaked. Ever since then, Anne Rice has been one of my favorite authors.

So, I'm a little biased about this movie. As an adaptation, it's absolutely horrible. Lestat goes from a gay character to straight (maybe Hollywood just wasn't ready for those "complex" relationships). The movie combines two amazing books into a shit heap, and the script completely ignores the real depth of the characters. Book set aside, I think the movie is actually kind of good and entertaining. It's hard to judge now since I'm older and biased...maybe it isn't a good movie...I mean, I was pre-pubescent and judged the movie by the hotness of Stuart Townsend.

Still, you have to admit the soundtrack is badass. I still, to this day, listen to the fake band "The Vampire Lestat" from my iPhone.

Just watched this for the first time in my life. Knowing nothing about it beforehand, I had such a great time with this movie. The opening where Lestat is awakened by a Nü-Metal band and immediately

is hysterical. HDTGM hasn't done a vampire movie since Twilight (?), maybe it's due.

Bump. It's on Netflix and I've had to watch it a couple more times. The accents are fucking ridiculous. It's like a dialogue coach just told the actors to pick a random vowel and hold it for and extra half second.

As for the music, it's absolutely terrible, and they treat it like it's Mozart and the entire world and media analyzes the lyrics like it's scripture, but most the verses are like 4 words long. I don't like Korn or Limp Biscuit in the first place, but I've heard "generic rock music" written for tv shows in the 90's that sounded better.

I did love most the scenes with Marguerite Moreau. The chemistry between her and Lestat was laughable and non existent. Actually, Stuart Townsend was just terrible all around. Impossible to watch and take seriously. God I hope they do this movie.

I just watched this again last night on TV. It's still one of my favorite bad movies and still needs to be covered.

Hahahaha, that clip is so embarrassing! That entire genre became dated so quickly.

I read (and enjoyed) these books when I was 14, and they definitely appeal to a young teenager's sense of dark romance. If tumblr was around back then, it would have been full of Lestat fanfic. But I think Anne Rice's soapy, turgid stories work best in print, where you can imagine the least ridiculous version of it. It's very difficult to do gothic films without lapsing into cheese.

Please, do this! If Twilight was wardrobed by Hot Topic!

That's how much Hot Topic changed from 2002 to 2008 that Twilight was wardrobed by HT lol.

But still I'm never giving up the opportunity to comment on this page and beg the trio to cover this movie.

Happy to see this thread pop back up! Would looooove to have this one on HDTGM.

This was nearing the end of times for the ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK FROM THE MOTION PICTURE craze. So they work a bunch of original songs into the film. It's still insanely funny to me that Lestat rises to power on the merits of his particular brand of Nü Metal. There is nothing in this scene that has aged well.

I posted another video in this thread last year (how time flies!), but I still love

Hence the amazing stream of trash that is this movie and why I want to hear June try to make sense of it all!
