Episode — Love, Dad

Recommended Posts

Welcome to the first episode of Love, Dad! Each week Dave Koechner & Jeff Ullrich will try to figure out how to be better dads. A general episode will consist of Dave’s clean joke of the week, answering listener questions, tackling a challenge of the week, and a tool/tip of the week. In this week’s episode, Dave & Jeff explore the question of why they decided to have kids.

I could listen to David Koechner talk forever. This is the best idea.

I enjoyed this episode, despite not having kids of my own. Jeff maintains an uncanny balance of "super analytical" and "super heartfelt" that makes all of his podcast appearances interesting, and it's great to hear Koechner in serious storytelling mode.

Apropos of nothing, two apps that might prove worthwhile for iPad-enabled dads:

  • Reading Rainbow: Official app "hosted" by LeVar Burton. The first book is free, and the full library is available via in-app subscription.
  • Happly: Frequently updated educational content and activities for kids. Parents can also bookmark stories/photos/videos to share with their kids without risking exposure to the horrors of the unfiltered Internet.

Here's one my daughter I made up that she used to tell in kindergarden:

Q: What do you call a breakfast that burps?

A: A belchin' waffle.

Classic joke structure- check. Reference to a body function- check. Sassy Palinesque gerund-rounding- check. She told it so well we used to call her Li'l Shecky.

As a non-child having listener I appreciate this podcast. I find your conversation helpful in figuring out my own life and what I want from it. Also, David is great. Please keep coming out with new shows like this.

More like Love, THIS PODCAST.That was horrible of me.

I'm a dad of 4 kids from ages 13 to 5. I make one of these dad podcasts and started it for part of the same reason, There wasn't much to pick from, podcasts were inconsistent or done with cheeky "morning radio" personality voices. I wanted to make something I would listen to. Thank you Earwolf for giving me this. And yes, I see this as a direct gift to me.

You guys mentioned Health Savings Accounts briefly and I just wanted to mention that my wife and I have an HSA and guess how many times we want/need to get money right back out of it? Yeah, EVERYTIME.

This isn't so bad. My kids have some knock knock jokes they've made up that made me fake chuckle at first but then 2 more hours of listening make me want to kill myself.

Really like the idea for this show!

David's story rang really true for me too. We decided to go off the pill after we got married and were pregnant within a couple months. Our first year of marriage included moving, having a baby and both starting new jobs. Anytime is a good time if you're emotionally ready.

Thanks! Keep them coming.

Oddly enough, having a kid makes you gay..... in the best way!

This is just wonderful. When I read the description I had to reread it a few times to see if it was a joke. As a father of a three year old and a one year old, this is just what I needed and I can't wait to see where you guys go with this.

Jeff sounds like he's worked on his radio voice and it sounds great. David is always dynamic on the mic and I love his timing. This is going to be amazing.

On a personal note, podcasts (namely Earwolf) got me through the early months of our second daughter. Around about three months old (which was just four months after the sudden death of my wife's mother) I was out driving the kids around when I heard the Sklars on Rome plugging Earwolf. I found the shows and never looked back. There were so many times that the newborn, Emily, was up all night and while my wife had been handling a lot of that, I found that by grabbing my iPod and catching up on all the back episodes of the various shows while I rocked her, that I became a Superman like figure in my house.

One topic I would like you to talk about (sorry to be that guy) is the theory that there is some postpartum depression out there for men. I think it has a name, but I forget it. Being a writer that is works out of my house, I've been there from the start with both of my children. While I love them like nothing else in my world, there have been times I just locked myself away during bad times and cried because I felt like I was such a screw up. It wasn't until a therapist told me that it isn't uncommon for stay and homes (of whatever sex) to experience this horrible feelings, but it is really hard for men to talk about.

Can't wait to see where you guys go with this and by the way, I've never been interested in Audible until the ad you had today.

Love you guys!

I have to say, this was an ingenious idea Jeff! I have 2 young daughters (11 months and 3 1/2 years) so I am right in the thick of things and I can't wait to listen to this podcast on a weekly basis. One topic that you may want to discuss, that I am going through right now with my oldest, is she doesn't eat anything!!!!! Is that not the most frustrating thing in the world? A whole plate of food and nothing and theres nothing you can do to force it, at least as far as I have tried. It's either, mac-n-cheese, chicken nuggets, or ravioli's, thats it! Anyway, look forward to listening to you guys!

Barry, one of my boys has autism and he has a pretty set palate when it comes to eating anything. I just started making his favorites by scratch so I could make them as healthy for him as possible. There's a great recipe I saw for chicken nuggets that gets them pretty close to the frozen kind. Anyways, its ok to make those things for her as long as she's eating and healthy. I tried the book "Deceptively Delicious" for a while. Neat tricks on sneaking veggies into your kids' food. Some of it was good.

Hey Barry, I totally get what you're going through. We thought out 5 yr old was just picky when he was 2, but he never grew out of eating his 3 things (pb&j, nuggets, grilled cheese). We've had many fights at the dinner table with him and the rest of our family because of his eating. It has been extremely frustrating and tiresome.

We started Food Therapy with him about 4 months ago and it has been awesome. Our pediatrician finally recommended we see a specialist after 2 years of no weight gain and being at 0% on the chart. You might want to see if you child qualifies for some therapy. If not, I'd be more than willing to send you some info of what we've done with him to get him to eat new foods and more quantity. Some of the exercises and steps are pretty easy and we've been really happy with the results. (He's currently eating scrambled eggs for breakfast which would have been unthinkable 4 months ago).

Good luck!

I've been waiting for Koechner to fin the right podcast fit for a while. This is so perfect.

My Earwolf origin is similar to Luke's. It eased me into being a first-time dad. I've been listening to every episode of CBB, then CDR, since my daughter was born. She's almost 2yrs now and this will be wonderful to have.

Thanks for everything, Earwolf. Here's to another great show.

New dad here with an 11-month old.

My kid has kept me home from most of the live comedy shows in my town over the last year (except for the CBB live show), but I haven't missed many of my Earwolf podcasts in that time. I'm anxious to add this one into the roster.

I think I'd listen to Dave talk about anything. I pray to heaven that Gerald Tibbons is a guest on one of these episodes soon.

This...this is amazing.

Up until last October, I had been a stay-at-home dad for 6 years*. Now I work in a government job (long story) while one of my best friends regales me with benignly torturous stories about living in NYC and taking improv classes at UCB (basically, my un-followed dream). Like some of the other dads in the thread, I've been listening to Earwolf podcasts since, I dunno, episode 3 or 4 of its Death Ray incarnation? Like Chase Roper said earlier in the thread, this feels like a gift (on top of all of the other hours and hours of gifts that Earwolf has already provided). Finding Chase's podcast today in addition to this...Xmas morning, man. It also has me kicking myself for not doing something similar in the, oh, half-decade plus or so I had to figure shit out.

Both podcasts have been added into the rotation. This is going to be great!
