Can you make a video game out of a movie? In this case, no! Jenny Slate joins us to discuss Super Mario Bros. the movie on this week’s How Did This Get Made? LIVE at Bumbershoot! We cover everything from the alternate dinosaur infested dimension, the absence of gold coins, Mojo Nixon’s odd cameo as a Goomba, and the fact that Mario & Luigi are not brothers in the movie. Plus, we hear what the gang was doing when the movie came out in theaters during our Q&A.

"Drop acid and watch this movie." Excellent advice Jason, it's the only way I can think of that would make this thing make any sense. Can't wait to see which horror movie got picked.
Sorry, Kansas. Home of Landbiscuit, The Race Dolphin.

As far as I know, this information is accurate. And mind-blowing.

"The Super Mario Acquaintences"
Best line of the episode.

I will say, I was a tad bummed that nobody knew anything about the Mario games; it makes the movie that much more mindblowing knowing the series' charming innocence and seeing it transformed into a weirdly dystopian, highly sexual dinosaur universe contained in the sewers of Brooklyn.

I just have to say that technically I believe most porno, IS already "orphan porn", or at the very least "broken home porn". Also, it is really great to hear you guys rip on this movie, I hated it when i was in middle school, and I liked total shit movies back then, so....thanks for another great ep. p.s. AND JENNY SLATE?! Seriously I loved tthis ep.

I do wonder if this was originally some rejected screenplay that the writers had lying around, and when they got asked to do the Mario movie, they just dug it out, renamed some of the characters, made it about these struggling plumbers, and thought "yeah that'll do."

I do love how Dennis Hopper still commits so hard in this movie, I loved Mantzoukas pointing out that Koopa is essentially Frank Booth.

Bob Hoskins still remembers this movie because he has Parkinson's not Alzheimers. And if I remember right Dennis Hopper said that it was a husband-wife team who were directing, the same couple made Max Headroom which should give an idea where their heads were at. They apparently were on a power trip and made changes on the fly and no one knew what was going on in the movie.

I remember as a kid being so depressed that there were NO powers in this movie. Where is the classic fireball power?! Didn't this movie come out when there were THREE mario bros games out for the NES?! Hell, maybe even super mario for SNES was out, yet who needs to use source material when you can get a goomba playing a harmonica. Marijuana tea makes this movie a 5/5 star instant classic

They forgot to mention the matress ice slide scene, the fact that everybody in the alternate universe is way too in your face about being evolved from dinosaurs, and when Mario & Luigi put Koopa into the Devolver and nothing happed, even though Toad was just into a goomba with the same machine. Also, the final scene when everybody loses completely loses their shit when they see the bomb-omb and when the bomb-omb is upside-down under the grate, Reebok is written on the bottom of its feet. There's also a scene after the credits.

This is my attempt at reading as far into the script as our lovely hosts do. They talked about how the cars were run on electricity. My brain somehow jumped to the conclusion that since the population evolved from dinosaurs, somehow fossil fuels never came into being and their cars couldn't run on gas. That seems like the same sort of logic used in the rest of this movie, so I can only assume it's right.

No turtles in this movie. How are there no turtles in this movie? If you remembered two objects from the game, "turtles" is probably one of them.

I know I already posted this, but seriously, is this not baffling? Did John Woo go to a garage sale at Bob Hoskins' house?

If I learned anything from this episode it's that Jason Mantzoukas is NOT a scientist.

I was a kid who loved Mario when this movie came out. I collected the official trading cards of the Super Mario Brothers Movie. I had the official Super Mario Brothers Movie trading cards card folder to keep the trading cards in.

Then eventually I saw the movie. I was really confused about everything that happened. Then I lost interest in the trading cards.

Yeah, this movie certainly ruined the game.

And what was with all those profile shots of Dennis Hopper?
