Welcome to the first episode of SHOTS FIRED, a weekly look into what’s good, what’s bad, and what’s weird in the world of hip-hop, hosted by music journalist Jeff Weiss and underground hip-hop star MC Nocando. Today the duo explore the meaning of the word “Fanute” coined by French Montana, talk about the history of Swag Dracula, and discuss the possibility of Nas using ghostwriters. Underground DJ (and co-founder of L.A. hip-hop mainstay The Low End Theory) the Gaslamp Killer drops by to tell us how he met Gonjasufi, describes getting his life together after hitting rock bottom, and plays some tracks off his latest album “Breakthrough.”

What's all this now? I can't possibly keep up with all of these shows...oh well, less time with my kids. I think that's what Love, Dad has been telling me to do.

I get the impression there's some genuine animosity between Team Cyberthug and Earwolf, but if y'all can quit beefin' for a few, I'd really like to see them as guest, or guest hosts, on this podcast.

I can promise you there is no animosity on our end and based on the last communication I had with Jerry and Sean, there is none on there end either. Maybe this can happen.

I love that a new hiphop podcast has the word 'beefin' in the third comment ever made about it.

Ben, if you didn't already know, you can buy all the Cyber Thug shows (including a bonus show) at the Earwolf store. Totally worth the $7.99, in my opinion! http://store.earwolf...lete-collection

I finally had a chance to listen today, interesting stuff. I'm anxious to see where they go in terms of style and timing because there were a few parts where I actually got a little lost on the topic. Not really clear what Swag Dracula is (I know, shocking that the middle aged white father/kid's writer doesn't understand) but I really liked hearing the interaction with the guest. I think these guys are going to be great as they get more comfortable with it.

This was great, cant wait to hear some of the more current episodes! Can we get Nocan's opinion on the current state of battle rap at some point? This was a pretty big year so far in terms of a change in the landscape.

Looking forward to hearing more!

Yah, I'm also a little unclear on the meaning of Swag Dracula. Initially, it sounded like a term for when someone is stealing someone else's style ... but then the discussion kinda detoured int the topic of ghost-writing (which I guess is sort of a related topic, but not exactly the same thing). I mean, you're not really a "dracula" if you're paying a ghostwriter for their lyircs. Right?

Big Nocando fan. Great show, earwolf. We absolutely need to have a freestyle battle between him and Hot Saucerman.

Is it just me, or does gaslamp killer sound a little bit like marc maron? Also, i wasn't so into Nocando's gay jokes, but he very quickly won me back with Twerkbot.

This shit is fucking awesome. A Swag Dracula is a style lifting bitter. I'm bout to drop a hot deuce on the commode. Bye bye.
