Detroit DJ/producer House Shoes and LA rapper Busdriver join MC Nocando & Jeff Weiss this week to discuss white rappers. The guys talk about the origins of the white rapper with Blondie, Beastie Boys being the white Run-DMC, 3rd Bass dissing Vanilla Ice, rapping actors, and Eminem’s long lasting impact. They also explain why white rappers getting a co-sign is important, describe what differentiates white rappers and black rappers, and vent on why certain white rappers get to places that they don’t deserve.
Yay Busdriver! He wasn't as talkative as I was expecting him to be, I suppose his motormouth delivery in his own music is a release valve for being a normally pent-up, thoughtful guy (or am I way off base?)
This was an interesting discussion but, even as a white guy, I don't really feel qualified to contribute much to it. I am all for hip-hop being available to everyone, so hey white people, do what you want but make sure you're doing what is you... don't fetishize the trials of others and try to adopt their experiences.
Really, I think my favorite rappers-who-happen-to-be-white are Grand Buffet, and they primarily use hip-hop as a foundation on top of which to be weird, with infrequent social commentary. It's not really parody, it's not really comedy... there's a kind of sincerity in how bizarre and stream-of-consciousness they are.
Failed slang would be a fun topic to cover, it's always so painfully awkward.
The funny thing for me, and probably for most white kids born in the mid-eighties, is that Vanilla Ice was my introduction to hip-hop. He was in Ninja Turtles 2!

Com'on guys, you can hate on Jensen Karp A.K.A. Hot Karl who is an Earwolf staple!
I hope they get him in studio at some point, he is fully aware of the absurd anomaly that was his career as a rapper, as well as being an encyclopedia of hip-hop minutiae.
I just want to say, that one month after Blondie released the album with Rapture, The Clash released Sandinista, which has more than one song where Joe Strummer raps, but most noticeably...
