  1. Ahhhhh....it's been a while since I listened to that episode, and I was having a hard time placing what he said about stupid people and Kathryn Bigelow. I was trying to figure out when he said people that liked Kathryn Bigelow were stupid, but this is a totally different statement, and I remember it now that you helped clarify. And I don't know if he was saying that people say exactly that, but there are a lot of people that will point to a token person whenever someone brings up diversity, whether it's about women, people of color, or GLBT actors/directors/whatever. And I think that was more his point than saying specifically that there were people out there saying "Kathryn Bigelow made it, so sexism in Hollywood is dead!"

He was probably being specific about women directors *and* making the wider point. The women directors bit because Lexi Alexander is the (female) director of Punisher: War Zone and the only woman I think who's directed a Marvel movie; and the wider bit because yes it's what a lot of people say to try and pretend there's no discrimination or imbalance towards a given group.

By the way, Lexi Alexander is AWESOME and should get to direct more stuff.

  2. In between discovering a slew of amazing comedians on Earwolf and Patton Oswalt's various condescensions, I'm kinda over him.

I have to say on the Kathryn Bigelow question I think he's right that only stupid people would say "we have enough female directors because Kathryn Bigelow" - do a lot of people say that though?

On your link to the Trever Noah scandal - while the article is spot on about the way Patton Oswalt defended Trever Noah being bullshit, I would like to say that Trever himself made no special pleading satire defence about those jokes, he just admitted they hadn't worked. If there is a defence of the fella it's that growing up as a mixed race boy in apartheid South Africa in which his very existence was a crime he probably has a different view on how thick skinned people should be and will no doubt have learned from the experience.

  3. M Night Shyamalan's new film The Visit has inexplicably got good reviews on its release and is apparently a return to form for M Night (although given he's made two good films, two iffy ones and the rest were terrible I'm not sure what "form" means here). It's less of a surprise it's doing good business as so many piss weak horror movies make money these days.

But seriously, this film sucks and is full to brimming with WTF moments. It's a perfect storm of serious flaws, gargantuan plot holes, unhinged madness and things for June to explore in more detail.

    Make it happen, HDGTM!

  4. I'm with you Taylor Anne, I honestly can't remember what episode I listened to first. I know I found it from a banner ad on Cracked.com and want to say that the first episode I listened to was the (mysteriously vanished) Green Lantern episode, but I could be wrong. I know I then went through all the episodes of the movies I watched. Once I had played through all of them, I was still craving more and went back and listened to the episodes of movies I hadn't seen. That's when I realized that the episodes were just as funny (sometimes even moreso) when you haven't seen the movie. I know by the time I had caught up with all of that, it was just before the "Howdies" last year (which I did enjoy, but was kind of bummed out about at the time since I had just listened to all the preceding episodes).

So, I started listening to episodes as they came out just before Staying Alive.

I am extremely grateful that I found this show though, not just for being consistently entertaining, but for opening my ears to the whole world of podcasting. I have discovered so many great shows, not just from exploring the other Earwolf shows, but from reading all of your posts and recommendations. So...thanks guys! :)/>

Amen to that - thanks to them I found the Wham Bam Pow podcast and now have a rather futile crush on Rhea Butcher

  5. At the end of the movie, Teddy gets promoted to Detective First Class. As he is walking away with Whoopi he tells her that with his new position he has the power to pick his own partner--heavily implying that he wants it to be her.

So...does that mean Teddy now outranks Whoopi???? She gets shot six or seven times in the line of duty and he gets all the credit for cracking the case...

    That's some bullshit.

A great illustration of how bad the glass ceiling is for black women, that even recently created genetic experiments are selected for promotion ahead of them. Some of the best sci-fi contains important social commentary after all.

  6. More omissions: in the scene where Ramsey (Ramsey! Ramsey!) talks to his son in the bedroom, the kid is watching a show about dinosaurs in his room which is talking about the brontosaurus in a very dry and documentary way. It's ironic that there's a lame reference to dinosaurs when Crichton did a more memorable job in Jurassic Park, because the whole film is a lame version of robots gone wrong which Crichton did much better in Westworld.

Also, Crichton said he wasn't interested in making the robots interesting (I think he called them "gadgets") - and didn't want his vision of the future to have any grime or dystopian Big Brother themes. To which the entire target audience of sci fi fans say "Duuuuuuh!"

  7. Tom Selleck's sidekick is played by the lovely Cynthia Rhodes, who also featured as dancer/doormat in Staying Alive. Her character's back story in Runaway is that she used to be a dancer. So what if this is actually a sequel to Staying Alive with her as the same character??

  8. I thought this episode was great! Having the gang back together was a treat.

I don't understand all of the vitriol being spat at Jason on this board? I think instead of trolling around spouting negativity you may just want to listen to another podcast and leave the rest of us alone. Zouks is a fucking national treasure! If you don't think so (I'll take a page from Jason himself) GO FUCK YOURSELF!

Hmm, I'm not sure, it does seem right for a comedy performer to be rude to their audience. It's not like those lovely nice comedians Don Rickles, Sarah Silverman, Jerry Sadowicz, Andy Kaufman or Jim Jefferies were ever anything but perfectly courteous to the people in the stalls...

  9. In London, if the film is being advertised all over the buses, it's a sign the film is shit. Also, if the only review quotes they put on the poster are from The Sun, The Star, or any other publication designed for simpletons.

Also: Generic Title: The Needless Punctuation The Clunky Additional Subtitle

And when it's a pointless remake of a film that was perfectly good the first time. They're remaking Point Break. For fuck's sake.
