I think the movie fails for me because it shows the family trusting him so readily, but it also needs to convince the audience that he's trustworthy too. It's tell not show writing. They trust him because the movie says they do, but they never really make a convincing argument why they should.

Especially the kid - Luke? - he sold out his sister for this stranger.  Yeeesh.

This is kind of what I thought but it only adds more questions. Why did he get surgery to look like the dead guy's friend? Did he even know this guy? How does befriending this family help him?

I think they were all in the same ✌️program✌️ and ✌️Dave✌️ really did make a promise to the dead man to look after his family, but to escape the ✌️program✌️ he had to get ✌️surgery✌️ to look like Dan Stevens?  Not sure if it✌️helps✌️him much except he could be a stickler for keeping promises?

    In conclusion: I dunno.

I looked at trivia on imdb for this. They made a point to say Dave hadn't gotten facial reconstruction surgery yet. Who thinks he had gotten it and who thinks he hasn't yet? I thought he definitely had to look like the dead army guy's buddy. The main reason I think so is because the picture on the screen when the daughter called the army about him was definitely a different guy.

I was confused by that.  But I think what happened was, he had gotten surgery to get a different face before coming to the house.  And then at the house, he was on the phone and he was trying to get ANOTHER surgery to change his face AGAIN.

Sorry for the unpopular pick! I should have made it clearer when I picked it (although I did allude to this fact) that it was a more tangentially musical Monday related because the soundtrack played a role in the film in the form of a mixtape (Us would have been my alternate choice because it uses I Got 5 on it in a similar way. Drive would also be another non-musical musical example in this vein). It was also my attempt to include the Halloween horror/thriller vibe because I love horror movies.

My issue was that The Guest didn't feel the music was a main focus of the movie.  Also, I didn't dig the soundtrack that much, but that's on me.  I probably would've liked the movie more if I had gone in expecting a straight mystery/thriller movie.

If I could stretch the MM rules myself, I'd pick a movie scored by John Williams.  What is everyone's favorite John Williams movie soundtrack and why is it Jurassic Park?

If you’ve never seen it, it’s worth watching an episode or two of Legion. You still might think he’s a terrible actor, but it’s a completely different performance.

I've seen the first 2-ish episodes of Legion and I tapped out.  Matthew Crawley forever.

I don't mean to sound rude or that I don't appreciate the pick, because I'm happy to watch and discuss anything with you guys, but how was this related to Musical Monday?

I had the same thought.  This movie was new to me, never read anything about it, so as I'm watching this, I kept waiting for people to sing and dance.

By the way, there is a remake of the musical in the works according to imdb. Taren Edgerton is playing Stanley. Scarlett Johansson is playing Audrey. Billy Porter as Audrey 2. Chris Evans as the dentist.

This is a strong cast but, boy, I really don't like the idea of remaking a movie that's basically flawless as is.

    Thanks, I hate it.

As soon he stepped up and sang, “Alexander Hamilton. My name is Alexander Hamilton” I was like “I’m in big, big trouble” lol

In other news, my wife finally witnessed Hamilton (she would not listen to the soundtrack and has made fun of me for years) to which she gave a hearty, “Yeah, I can see why people like this.”

    That's high praise.

  8. Did I love this overall?  No.

But there were some absolute gems:

    • Scarecrow's nose, a Reese's peanut butter cup wrapper?
    • As Dorothy announces she's going to confront Evillene, she takes off her earrings matter-of-factly
    • Any time they sang East on Down the Road
    • Everybody Rejoice dance sequence
    • Diana Ross' performance of Home at the end
