Also this is where we need Taylor Anne's input, but I would imagine the Cuban population is no so large in Texas. I would imagine most of the Hispanic people there are from Mexico. I could be wrong. It just seemed everything was Cuban run or themed or maybe Mexican culture and Cuban culture has more overlap than I thought.

Also, like, I'm sure I'm not too culturally aware, but when you think of Cuban burritos, don't you think of the ones that are cooked on both sides (kinda like a Cubano), not those regular burritos Vanessa tried to eat?

I have a question about dance contests because the world of dance seemed weird to me.

Would dancers in this kind of contest all be dancing simultaneously? Since everything is choreographed, it seems like that dancers would either be altering their routine on the fly or just bumping into each other constantly.

Ahem, as a casual watcher of other dance movies and a season or 2 of Dancing with the Stars, yes, it is normal for multiple couples to dance simultaneously on the dance floor, especially in the early heats.  The couples can be judged against other and the way a couple navigates around other couples can also be judged.

And she didn’t seem to understand that sometimes you can just dance. Like him, I don’t know technical terms, but I can dance.* Why was that so shocking to her?

    *citation required.

He says "I'm Cuban, of course I can dance!" but that the concept of ball-change was too foreign.

    Great episode!

Just a quick nitpick, at one point in the episode, Paul describes Dill as being “their rich friend,” but I’m pretty sure everything he was saying about his wealthy father was a way of hiding the fact that he didn’t have a father which I’m sure would have been absolutely scandalous at the time.

I also didn’t think the judge’s feelings were all that ambiguous. I think it was pretty clear that he felt like Tom was innocent from the get go. That’s why he personally chose Atticus to defend him. He figured Atticus was the maybe the only lawyer in town who would put up an honest defense for Tom. He could have picked anyone, but he chose Atticus. So him storming out of the court wasn’t because he was swayed by Atticus’ defense and upset that he lost, so much as Atticus did exactly as he hoped he would from the beginning and it still wasn’t enough.

I am super late to the mockingbird party, so I hope you still remember what you wrote here, lol. I recently went to see To Kill A Mockingbird, the play, and these 2 points were made super obvious in the play, as you assumed.

I really hated the Nina Paley parts. Like I was almost ready to give this movie one star as a result. I get that she wrote it (though I’m pretty sure she just interviewed the narrators) and animated it all which is impressive but her story has no real connection to the Ramayana other than breaking up but still loving the guy. Other than that the links are tenuous at best. The voice acting for her ex-boyfriend was awful. The animation style was very 10oz Mouse. The whole thing just seemed like “this event lead me to the Ramayana” but I just wanted to hear the story of the Ramayana. If there was more information in her story to link to the connections it might have been interesting. The fact the songs line up with the story is much more interesting.

    I agree with this 100%.

That’s kind of my feeling, but whatever everyone wants to do is 100% cool with me. Should I put up a poll?

    Sure

I'm kind of the same. I've only seen it once but I've seen bits of it many times and talked about it a lot. I'll watch it, as I said, but we can also move to whatever is next.

I know we skipped Trespass because we couldn't find a place to stream it but I can stream it through my library if people want that. I don't think it's the most fun watch but I saw it by myself. So, maybe it's more fun in a group?

    I wouldn’t mind watching Trespass

    - Why advertising? Aside from it being a major movie trope profession, why not make him an actual music producer, maybe a failed one. And the choir, and Beyonce are his ticket back?

Maybe because he had a history of faking his qualifications, so they made him scam his way into the choir too?  And Beyonce said  his incompetence at being choir director was obvious, but I thought it would be a bigger confrontation.

Soooo... when I would watch Top Gun, for example, those faceless Russian pilots were the dudes who might literally KILL MY DAD, so I found myself rather invested in Cold War narratives from the age of, you know, 5.

Oh, so you’re not in it for the shirtless volleyball. Just me then?

I love this one series of communist ones that are of Russia and China. It looks like a delightful story of two comrades falling in love and raising children together.

Look! They love to read together! They have a garden! A family portrait! ( with terrifying children. )

I have a whole bunch of these posters that I got from a flea market and they're simply aMAOzing.

I'm find with that. I really loved Passing Strange we did not so long ago and that was a filmed Broadway show. Only thing I will add is I might (I'll speak for all non-US people) have a hard time getting some of them.  If it's on YouTube or Vimeo or something like that, but streaming here isn't always the same.

Omg guess what, I saw Oklahoma and Rebecca Naomi Jones from Passing Strange was in it 😍
