  1.

Halloween is on Monday. Presumably if they're doing a Suicide House ep, that would probably be when it drops.

Also, I demand a faith-off between Reverend TP Stain and Reverend Parsimony!

gotcha, yeah. that makes complete sense. i forgot that we still have enough time in octy-doggy for a halloween ep to happen, even while, as far as I know, previous halloween eps have come a few days before.

  2. I love Claudia. she is so funny & creative, seemingly effortlessly.

the other time(s) Beth was on, i kinda hated that character. the whole "pow pow power wheels" thing really grates me, like nails on a chalkboard. i felt this appearance was much better, partly because of how impressed i was at Jessica McKenna's raps, but i still hate the pow pow power wheels thing. warming up to the character and certainly to Jessica, but right now for me they're nowhere near cbb allstar status, & not close to neil cambell like previously compared in this thread, although i don't like some of his characters either.

  3.

I actually really liked him but was mad at Scott/Jason for basically steamrolling him.

    [snip]

i basically agree [with the whole post, but snipped it to save space on the page]. they are such bros to each other that sometimes they behave like they're the only two in the room. that they spiral out of control on these nonsensical, deliberate mishearings of each other and whatnot so regularly really bugs me and it's really disruptive, and, like you say, not nice to the guest who was trying to bring something particular to the table.

i love scott, but i'm pretty lukewarm on zouks. i know that's unpopular here, but their screwing around together is not a very appealing part of this show to me.

i like this Marvin Phelps character, and he could be really good if he is allowed to be. keep it up, Carl Tart.

Well, you'll have to blame Scotty for that one. Mantzoukas said "Hang on, man," but Scott was the one who misheard it as "Heynong Man." And the world was never the same.

True. Role reversal on that one. I do think this sort of thing is a big part of their banter though. But I don't know why I'm singling him out - it is probably something a lot of guests do. I mean, countless premises are set up by someone saying something, and it slightly sounding like something else, so another person runs with that and repeats it back. PFT does it a lot too. Lapkus as well. Jason ain't the only one.

Anyway, I think most people like when Mantzoukas is on this show because he and Scott are clearly friends and it's fun to hear people fuck around with someone they're comfortable and have a history with.

I've listened to a couple more episodes with Zoinks in 'em, and while they didn't necessarily boost my estimation of him much, I did learn that he and Scott have known each other since they were kids and were in a tv show together as children. Er, I think that was true... maybe it was a bit... i can't remember! anyway yeah they clearly know each other well. I just... I don't know. The charm of Jason Mantzoukas just hasn't really struck me yet.

I completely agree, but as a fan of the show you have to respect its power. I got to HNM PFT and it will probably go down as one of my life's great achievements. And you're definitely wrong about Zouks, but hey everybody likes different stuff. Some people even like Smashmouth.

You are right, I do respect the power & reach of HNM. It has shown up in a lot of usual places, uttered by some famous and unexpected people. It is fixed in the CBB lore. I don't think it's funny by itself, but using it as a reference to CBB or as a little nod-of-the-head is funny. I'm not sure I could think of another CBB one-liner that seems to be so universally well known among CBB listeners.

About Zouks: he's fine, and his name on an episode would never steer me away or anything like that, but right now I just don't think I 'get' him. He's less in-character than most guests, I guess, and I'm not really into just listening to him berate scott and break down scott's bad jokes for 90 minutes. 'Banter' might be a good word for it. Just not really into listening to him banter. I enjoy it more when they're in character and embrace the silliness.

  6. Tommy MiddleDee is so funny. so quick and creative. and he likes weezer (posted some videos of them on instagram if i recall correctly). hopefully just old weezer. new weezer is 99% not good.

i think if I won the opportunity to be on the pod and have scott invite my favorite guests like that one guy did for donating to kulap's movie, i'd currently pick Tommy MiddleDee, Lauren Lapkus, Neil Campbell as the Time Keeper, and Jon Gabrus as Gino. I guess we already get that group with somewhat regularity minus Middleditch, but still. That's the group that makes me laugh the most. There are a lot of others I'd enjoy too like Horatio Sanz, Mike Hanford as John Lennon, PFT, Nick Kroll, Claudia O'doherty, and on and on and on, but I can't pick 'em all.

One guy I don't really get, and I know I'm in the tiny minority on this, is Mantzoukas. His main thing seems to be hearing scott wrong, and repeating back what he heard wrong. This might as well be heresy around here but the whole "heynong man" thing never really struck me as very funny either. I've heard a handful of his episodes, but maybe I still need to hear more to come around to him.

  7. This episode was really funny. I hadn't heard the first Kid Detectives so I went back and listened to that after, and then this one again. These are really good characters with some really funny qualities and I look forward to any and all additions to this series.

  8. These people!

Are you really really sad to say that?

Good to hear you only plan to come around when you really really need to post about your huge huge disappointment.

I am not at all familiar with any of the people who played the Timeys, so using a group term in that sentence (describing all guests but Neil/Max) made sense to me.

Sorry that I'm not toeing the line, but this was far below the standard of any Maxwell Keeper episode and it was clear they didn't have a handle on their characters the way Neil does on his. The richness of character and humor that Neil/Max delivers was diluted by having to share mic time with people who didn't get it the way he gets it.

Maybe I *will* only come around when I'm disappointed with stuff. Maybe that's why I've never done so til now. When things are good I don't have to talk about it, I just enjoy it. They (CBB) don't owe me anything, but I'm allowed to dislike an episode from time to time, and I'm allowed to express disappointment about it.

I liked your plugs theme, though.

  9. Please excuse that my first post is a negative one, but I'm really really sad to say that this episode was a huge, huge disappointment. I was so looking forward to the silliness that could have been Max recapping his wild Tallahassee Bacchanal but this just fell so flat. The Timeys were mostly not funny (except maybe the Time Master in bits) and didn't capture the essence of Neil's character and reflect it onto their own. The less we hear from these folks and the more it's just Neil/Max, the better. He is extremely funny and the rest of these people can't keep up with him.
