Before Sunrise vs. Before Sunset (vs. Before Midnight?)

Before Sunset is my personal favourite, but as with the potential future LOTR episode, I'd put in the trilogy rather than a specific part of the Before Trilogy.

The Harry Potter Films, or at least Prisoner of Azkaban

Maybe Prisoner of Azkaban Vs The Harry Potter Series? Akin to Godfather 1&2 Vs all of the Godfather trilogy? Like how Casino Royale is the one James Bond film representing the rest of their impact. I fuckn love Prisoner of Azkaban. More stylish and impressive than anything before or after in the series.

    Episode 86: BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S

I love Scott Pilgrim so much, and yet I keep going back and forth on that ending. Is it Scott and Ramona realising the flaws in their expectations, themselves and each other and just dealing with it? Or is it a Hollywood ending (that fully works btw) I'll save it for the Scott Pilgrim episode (PLEASE!) And in reference to BoT, there's no other way that film was ending- considering 60's Hollywood- but I do like that the complexity of Holly creates at least the possibility that it may not happen.

    Top Gun

I'm not even sure it's worth discussing. I didn't really know it existed till Archer made a reference to it (is that too millennial of me?) Plus, it's kinda shitty. The homoeroticism's not even interesting- accidental, but not in a fun way

Episode 85: BOOGIE NIGHTS vs TWBB

It's been mentioned before in this thread, but the Religion V Capitalism idea doesn't really work because it isn't really a fair fight within the context of the movie, and thematically they both represent the same ideas. I read the ending as being a deeply personal revenge by Daniel Plainview and nothing else. Also, his performance is so great, but sometimes deeply ridiculous, I was outright laughing at the absurdity in some moments. I think they were purposeful..? Also, I read Roger Ebert's review where he was absolutely scathing about Plainview's relationship with his son, using him as a 'prop' and nothing else. I think he does use him as a prop, like all shitty, egocentric parents; but I also do think he loves him, as Devin mentioned, during the baptism scene and all the small moments between the two of them.

    Suggestion: The Great Escape

The ultimate Dad movie- Is it too light for the Canon? Is it too much of a boy's movie? Should we look past those criticisms to allow Steve McQueen into the canon?

    Episode 86: BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S

Ticking the Canon boxes for influential and culturally relevant for all time (even if it's mostly for Hepburn), but I can't get excited honestly. I think the material is hindered by the censors, and the film wasn't skilled enough to handle connotations decently enough. + I think George Pepperd is either a bad actor, or simply can't elevate the kinda shitty material. Hepburn almost gets this across the line for me, her character and her performance is career-defining, but not enough honestly, I'm not sure I'm chill with a Canon that is this forgiving. But at the same time, I won't make a fuss if it's in; it is totally understandable.

    Homework: Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)

I would love to hear about the adaptation choices RE the dude being gay in the books V a romantic interest in the film. He's so boring, verging on dislikable in the film.

    Homework: Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)

Is Audrey Hepburn's career defining, beyond iconic role worth inducting an OK film with a ridiculous yellow-face role and the main dude being a bit shit?

    Episode 84: RE-ANIMATOR

RE Cannibal Holocaust opening the floodgates- I'm not so sure... I'm sure on a personal level it allowed Devin to be more audacious with his choices, but as a film and as a choice- It's interesting enough to be discussed and allowed. The indulgance picks should've been a versus - even though I dislike Pennies from Heaven, at least it is unlike anything else in the Canon, has high aspirations and isn't totally inept. And yes, as soon as we have the chance, this garbage is getting taken out so quickly.

    Yeah but he's a badddiee

    Episode 84: RE-ANIMATOR

Also, that conversation about the internet towards the end was so funny- Devin and Amy doing peak banter. Great stuff.

    Episode 84: RE-ANIMATOR

I'm going to go a bit further than Amy and say it's a Terrible film. + Evil Dead 2 and Braindead are the poor neglected children This is probably the hardest i'm voting No since Working Girl.

    The Music Man

Yeah, but what about inducting Marge vs the Monorail instead?

    The Shining

Perfect perfect film!! Maybe only place of contention would be Shelley Duvall's acting. I know it's defended as much as it's hated- but her hysteria goes into overdrive for me- partly due to the behind the scenes bullying going on perhaps...

identifying with an opposite gender lead

I identified with Kiki- and also understood both sides of Kiki intensely disliking that boy who's clearly into her. I feel like I've experienced and understood both sides of those in my childhood. And yes completely agree with Amy, Men have been so prevalent in art and culture since the dawn of time, so naturally every audience member has no problem with it. RE Men connecting with women- to quote George RR Martin: "You know, I've always considered women to be people". I think it's more of an issue of representation. Studios need to up their game, and hopefully- I do think the new Star Wars films AND Captain Marvel (Hopefully) should create a push for the mainstream films to create a standard for everyone to follow.

    Todd Solondz

I feel like, as with AntiChrist, I'm not sure I could sit through any of his films from what I've heard. BUTTTTT, continuing the comparison with AntiChrist, It would be A Terrific, TERRIFIC episode.

    Leigh's Happy-Go-Lucky

I would've preferred a Happy-Go-Lucky episode over Kiki's Delivery Service. There's more meat for a Canon discussion with this one. I really enjoy that film- but I'm not sure I would have 'got it' if I hadn't read FCH's glowing reviews beforehand.

    Episode 83: KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE

Lovely little film that I'd would have loved to watch as a kid- but they're right- the manufactured climax kind of breaks the film and it's ultimately a bit slight. soft no
  21. I intensely disliked Viral, but VHS 2 is a legitimately great anthology horror film- I'm not sure it's Canon in any way- but it's worth checking out if you're a horror nut- really inventive ideas in there!
  22. I think there was a thread from the old forum- but I re-listened to the Do the Right Thing episode in which they couldn't think of an example- especially recently. I've heard people refer to The Dark Knight being a Conservative film- but I personally still am confounded by those claims- even though I wouldn't be surprised if Nolan was Conservative (I love him dearly)

    Homework: Kiki's Delivery Service (1989)

Here's the important question: Dubs or Subs? I just saw Phil Hartman is in the Dubs version, so I think that's enough to sway me- Or is that considered blasphemy in the Anime world?

    Episode 82: THEY LIVE

I was reminded of a problem I have occasionally with documentaries about serious ongoing issues in the world. The documentary takes the time to detail why its a serious threat, but ends relatively hopeful, as to not antagonise the audience. I believe the B-movie aesthetic of this film was at serious odds with the themes that I believe are important. The elements of B-movies weren't enhanced by the themes- the themes were dragged down into the B-movie pit. Dealing with this non-physical worldwide epidemic with moronically portrayed violence and catchphrases- I dunno... The ending in particular- the fact it was a literal joke- I know Devin/Amy defended this as a connection between the simplicity of the 'sheeple' but I think it just speaks as to how simply the movie views this topic; aliens are a fun sci-fi B-movie tool first, allegory second. No from me, sorry guys- luckily for the film's chances- I think i'm in the minority.

    Episode 65 - Election

Just read this affecting piece: Apparently it was on during this Canon Inducted movie! Fascinating, if sad read.
