  1. Yay it's back April 17, been far too long (6months and 1 day per Amy). Listening to the announcement made me realise how much I missed hearing Amy's film critiques in audio form.

The new format sounds interesting having a new guest each week. I really enjoy David Ehrlich's writing and I was genuinely shocked when Amy said Armond White would be on, I couldn't tell if that was a joke or not? I presume not.

Good to hear you're back Amy, can't wait to put The Canon back into my commute routine.

Where did she say all of this?

  2. and then it's revealed that he was guilty of that which he claimed to detest so much.

I just want to point out that it was alleged, but never proven, that he did this, unless there's been some new development that I haven't seen.

  3. It for sure should be between CLERKS, RE-ANIMATOR, or CHI-RAQ

While I love CLERKS, it being a very formative movie for me in terms of who I am as a person and getting me interested in filmmaking (I'm from NJ and was around all of the places in Kevin Smith movies), it is not canon worthy. This is because every reason why is good is done first and better in SLACKER. SLACKER is the better of these two movies and the two accomplish the same thing. To have both in the canon doesn't feel right.

RE-ANIMATOR should get kicked out because of Amy's sound arguments during the episode. EVIL DEAD 2 is in the canon. It feels like treading the same ground (as mentioned above with CLERKS and SLACKER).

CHI-RAQ was one of the worst experiences I ever felt watching a movie I actually walked out of the theatre half way becuase I couldn't take it anymore. It was the movie I was most excited to see and had everything going towards it, but I feel like Spike Lee ruin his chance to make a great anti-gun/anti-war film. CREED didn't really deserve it either, but I'd love that a million times over instead of CHI-RAQ.

I will never understand you people who like Slacker. Not only is it not a good example of what it is, but I'd go so far as to call it a bad movie. It reminds me of a bad student film.

Also, I'm getting tired of this "We need to kick this movie out because this similar movie is still in here" argument, and we need to stop it unless we're going to be consistent. No one's calling to kick out Goodfellas because The Godfather is also in the canon, even though their both gangster movies about people spiraling downwards and losing what makes them human. There can be more than one similar movie if they're both significant versions of whatever they are.

  4. Halloween vs. Psycho would be very interesting though. The original slasher film vs. what many consider the definitive slasher film.

Both are iconic, vastly influential and transcend their own genre.

Don't you dare make me have to make that fucking decision. I won't do it, I tell ya!

But yes, A Nightmare On Elm Street definitely deserves its own discussion.

  5. I'd easily go for anything directed by Larisa Sheptiko, Agnes Varda, or Chantal Akerman. I'd also like to throw out there that the entire Slumber Party Massacre series was directed by women. Don't know if anyone would vote any of them in (other than me), but I do think that the fact that those all came from women could make an interesting discussion.

  6. I voted no, two reasons:

    1. There are better musicals that belong in The Canon instead of this. Musicals where people actually sing. Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but there are no classic musicals in The Canon yet. How this gets in before West Side Story, Singin in the Rain, Fiddler on the Roof, or many others is beyond me.
    2. If we're going to vote on indulgence picks, then I think it should be a vs.episode with the other host picking the vs. movie.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show made it in.

  7. I really should like this more than I do. This is my second time watching it, having not seen it in maybe 10 years, and just like the last time, I didn't find it all that funny. It has nothing to do with the racial stuff. If anything, that's what I found the funniest. Mel Brooks movies as a whole have just always felt like the jokes were too easy to really be funny to me, but I could still appreciate things like The Producers or Young Frankenstein. Ultimately, I only really chuckled a few times, and found myself quite bored with most of it. I don't know, maybe in a few more years it will click with me, but for now, I have to go with a no.

  8. The Exterminating Angel isn't a long version of un Chien Andalou, but just a great feature length film by the same director. I was just questioning why a director with great feature films should have a short film inducted instead.

It's not like Bunuel can only have one film in the canon. While I do like Exterminating Angel better, Un Chien Andalou is a masterpiece of early surrealist film making, thus I would say it deserves its shot.

  9. I really like Sherlock Jr., but this is Keaton's masterpiece as far as I'm concerned. On first viewings, the pro-Confederacy/glorification of war aspects kinda threw me off, but if can not take those too seriously, this is apparently one of the best films ever made. Big yes!

As for Greed, a big problem with doing an episode on it is that it hasn't had a home video release since laserdisc, but catching it on TV or finding it online is about the only way to watch it. On the plus side, you won't have to worry about watching the super long version since it hasn't been known to exist for almost a hundred years. The most complete version available is a bit over two hours long. There is a four hour version, but the extra run time consists of still photos and excerpts from the book, so it's probably only really worth watching as a curiosity. Chances are, the original version will never be seen again.

  10. i rented this movie and didn't get a chance to watch before it was due back :-( i'll re-check it later...did they announce what movie will be on next week's episode? there isn't a homework thread as of yet

They're taking a week off due to both of them travelling and haven't decided what the next one will be yet. It'll probably be posted here at some point before the episode is released.
