  1. I've only been able to finish one episode this season. It seems that it takes around 20 minutes in each episode before Amy and guest start discussing the movie of the week. Add in the lack of agenda and the constant sidebars and I just start losing interest. If this is the direction the show is going, it's Amy's decision, but it's not for me anymore.

  2. I've seen Iron Giant over a dozen times and I still break down bawling at the end when the Iron Giant says in his Vin Diesel voice:

    SUUUUUUUUUUUUPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERMAAAAAAAAAN

When i first watched it, I thought of my father and his support for me, now I think of my son.

I don't watch this movie with friends. :P

No movie has destroyed me in such a fashion.

  3. I'll echo some other comments

This isn't close to being the best of Henson's Muppet films. If you want fantasy Muppet, The Dark Crystal is far superior. If you want Muppets, then I vote for the first Muppet Movie, (even though the remake was REALLY good).

Just NO. I won't even bother listening I'm so NO on this one.

    Have I said no?

maybe you guys should lock these homework threads... :P

  4. I voted no, two reasons:

    1. There are better musicals that belong in The Canon instead of this. Musicals where people actually sing. Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but there are no classic musicals in The Canon yet. How this gets in before West Side Story, Singin in the Rain, Fiddler on the Roof, or many others is beyond me.
    2. If we're going to vote on indulgence picks, then I think it should be a vs.episode with the other host picking the vs. movie.

  5.

Dragonslayer is amazing. First off, it's an underrated gem. Secondly, best practical dragon effects ever. Thirdly, it handles fairly heavy thematic subject matter such as the erasure of native culture and histories, represented by Christianity dominating "pagan Europe" as best represented by the dragon and the wizard.

And fun fact, the design for the dragon influenced del Toro's kaiju designs in Pacific Rim. It needs more respect.

Excalibur, likewise, needs more respect. Willow I haven't seen in years, so no comment, and Black Death? If you cut some of the filler getting to the village with the dark secret, it'd go from good to great in a second.

I honestly get sad at the lack of a Dragonslayer Bluray. I saw it several times in the theater when it was released, and you're right about the heavy themes and overall darkness of the film. Very strange at the time for a Disney release. And Vermithrax Perjorative? What a fucking incredible name for the Dragon.

    just for fun

  6. The best thing Oliver Stone ever co-wrote!

Basil Poledouris' score is surely one of the most influential ever, and is still reused today in movies, games, and trailers. Incredibly evocative, stirring music.

Fun fact: this was the last major studio film recorded and released to theaters in mono sound.

Conan doesn't get the respect it deserves, probably due to spawning an entire genre of crappy imitators, from Deathstalker to Ator the Fighting Eagle to the Barbarian Brothers (to say nothing of Conan's poor sequels). In fact, I'd say it's the only good "low fantasy" movie ever made.

This film is also well worth tracking down on disc, in order to hear the amazing commentary by Schwarzenegger.

I'll put out there that there's simply a lack of respect for the genre that has kept low fantasy from getting out of the kids movie and b movie buckets. I will disagree though that Conan is the only good low fantasy movie ever made. Off the top of my head I would add into that list:

    Good to Excellent:

    Dragonslayer

    Excalibur

    Willow

    Black Death

    Passable or at least entertaining.

    The Sword and the Sorcerer

    The Beastmaster

Solomon Kane <--- one I really like. I don't recall it getting good reviews though.

I'm sure I could add more, but I'm sticking with a pretty narrow "Swords and Boards + Wizards and Monsters but no Elves and Dwarves and other silliness" definition.

  7. The Coppola film is mostly bullshit, apart from some of the production design and art direction (the Hammer-esque exteriors, Dracula's incredible suit of armor).

I guess we know which way you would vote then ;)

  8. I went with There Will Be Blood. I can watch Boogie Nights in bits and chunks, individual scenes stand out, but I can walk away from the entire narrative at any time. I'm more drawn to the individual pieces in it then the movie as a whole. If I start watching There Will Be Blood I'm in for the duration. I'm sucked in solely by the power of Daniel Day Lewis' performance every time.

  9. Watching it right now and realizing how much I love this movie. It's just fantastic, with a solid and poignant story, iconic songs, and a performance from Topol so immense that both he and Tevya will be one and the same forever.

  10. I guess after listening to this week's episode, I couldn't help but think of my own love for the Return of the Living Dead. Probably not canon, but having never seen Re-Animator before I was also kind of confused as to why it was being considered.

I'd take Return of the Living Dead over Re-Animator any day. Love it. Can't wait for the upcoming BR re-release.
