    Homework: Re-Animator (1985)

I strongly recommend you listen to more episodes and read her writing because she happens to be a very intelligent and interesting critic with opinions that she expresses regardless of their popularity. I disagree with her at least once on almost every episode but I am fascinated by how she watches movies and 100% respect her critiques.
  2. I think that is why I like the simplicity of Kiki so much. It celebrates the tiny things that often get excluded when celebrating strong female characters. This forum is composed of really intelligent individuals so if the gap exists it seems to be more subconscious than conscious. I do agree that it is definitely an issue of representation one that seems to be improving with things like the above mentioned movie, Mad Max and, I think Everly handled the subject really well also
  3. I think it deviated into the realm. A lot of her finding her identity and establishing her role with her peers and community felt specific to female experience. I think it was handled in a way that made it feel universal so that it could be identifiable to male viewers but I think the story has a tone that really emphasizes Kiki balancing emerging femininity with childhood sensibility.
  4. Nope. Ghost World first. Line in the sand. Sorry. Then this though because, this is awesome.

    retroactively nominating that as well.

    Christmas in july

Rare exports vs gremlins Gremlins is definitely the more popular film but I think rare exports is a far superior Christmas horror movie.

    TV Movies/Miniseries

We already inducted Chi-Raq which I'm pretty sure was produced by amazon. It's definitely something to consider. Media is produced across many different platforms and I agree there are things worthy of consideration I don't know if I want to open the scope that wide but, I wouldn't be vehemently against it.
  8. I'm not crazy for the Friday remake but thumbs up for My Bloody Valentine 3D.

    Homework: Re-Animator (1985)

Valid points and normally something that I wouldn't feel comfortable being on the side of. I feel kind of like Devin in the Temple of Doom episode where the thing I am defending is ugly and morally murky but I don't know. I think its okay to like movies that are trashy and occasionally offensive as long as you can be aware of that and contextualize it.
  10. The remake fly 2 with eric stoltz I know the original has a sequel but from what I understand it's hard to get a hold of and not very good any way. I disagree with you completely on cube 2 as it is a thoroughly enjoyable movie. I enjoy it mostly for its WTF value but I think that still counts. Cube zero or whatever the third one is called is a pretty decent return to gory practical effects.

I know we've already hit a lot of Spielberg but it's summer and I just saw The Shallows and it was awesome. It made me want to have a cool shark movie every summer for the rest of time and I don't even care if that sounds like the most specific twilight zone premise of all time.

    Episode 83: KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE

I think there are strong emotional scenes in this movie, that are played subtly. Maybe I'm reading into it but watching it this time the moment when Kiki is in bed, sick after delivering the pie in the rain. She seems to be sick with sadness. It is immediately after her customer is callous that she becomes ill. It read like she was disappointed to see kind intentions shut down by shallow cruelty. Yes she literally has a fever but she recovers remarkable quickly and I think something deeper is happening in this moment.

Is Ghost World indulgence? I feel like it could have a justifiable episode.

    Homework: Re-Animator (1985)

Personally I love this movie because it adapts, as someone already mentioned a pretty dry story and turns it into an over the top campy gore fest that takes itself completely serious. I love when a movie can establish a tone so far outside the realm of reality and commit to it wholeheartedly. I can appreciate that if you don't like gore its probably pretty insufferable but I have a smile on my face for like 99% of this movie.
  15. I don't believe in guilty pleasures either. I unabashedly love TCM 2 and will watch it knowing full well that my film friends turn their nose up at it. I meant " not good" in the sense that its probably not general canon. I agree the first 45 minutes of Jason X is kick ass but then it kind of peters out for me. This is probably blasphemous but I've never been a big fan of the Friday movies.
  16. I love Nightmare 2 and I will always defend that movie you're right about it not being great but at least they were trying for something interesting and it probably passes that test devin tried to institute however many episodes ago about a movie only needing three great moments to be considered canon.

    Episode 83: KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE

I haven't seen this movie in about 10 years and I was really excited to revisit it. It didn't have the impact that it had for me when I was a kid but, I still really enjoyed it and as other people have commented I don't think it's gentleness is a negative. I think Amy has brought up before that she tries to judge a movie not based on her personal tastes but how well it succeeds in what it is trying to do. I think Kiki's Delivery Service is incredibly well executed and can't be faulted just because it's dissimilar to Spirited Away, Totoro ect. I'm not a huge fan of anime but I do appreciate films that treat girls coming of age with respect and I think this movie satisfies two areas of the canon that are sourly lacking.

    Horror then and now

My brain always title swaps that movie with In My Skin. Both are pretty brutal to get through but very interesting movies. Has any one gone to see The Shallows yet? I kind of want to see Steven Seagull and Black Philip star in their own buddy cop franchise.

    Homework: Kiki's Delivery Service (1989)

I assumed this movie would be shelved with the rest of the movies in my library and instead ended up awkwardly following the librarian through shelves of puppets into the kids section.

    Horror Versus

I was trying to think of another foriegn vs american remake where both films could hold there own but I've got nothing so... The devil's backbone vs The others Funny games (original) vs man bites dog eraserhead vs the brood peeping tom vs eyes without a face This would be completely unpleasant but, In a Glass Cage vs Persona

    Horror then and now

The first paranormal activity is actually kind of scary. Its a very good example of using you're limitations as resources. I hate the impact it had on the genre in that movies that don't need to be shot found footage where shoe-horned into the medium but, I feel like the modern theatrical horror model is structured around this movie (for better or for worse).

    Horror then and now

*proudly* insidious it's a pretty solid pg-13 horror and James Wan's kind of fantastic at constructing a scare, one of the few horror general audience directors that doesn't rely only on sound for jumps.

I'd love to have an excuse to watch it I love the book.

    Your Indulgence Picks

Thank you for your explanation I was honestly curious. I feel like I should revisit it. I think I developed a bitter taste for it because it was being shoved down my throat as an amazing swoon romantic movie and as the kid that would rather watch Evil Dead 2 at the slumber party I don't know if I ever even gave it a fair chance. You're words inspire me to pop some popcorn and dredge up a copy.
