Episode 171 - Miami Connection: LIVE!

Out of all Floridians, these are the least trustworthy.

Episode 171 - Miami Connection: LIVE!

June: "This is my kind of ninja movie." I don't know why this didn't get more of a laugh from the crowd. It might have been one of my favorite lines from the show.

    Double Dragon (1994)

The whole movie is on YouTube. The...whole...movie.

    Hostage (2005)

That's amazing! I need to start watching more movie commentaries. I've typically only done it with comedies rather than dramas and actions. I might have to try and find this one, because it sounds like a great backstory.

    Nightbreed (1990)

That's the only version I've seen. What was cut out? This movie isn't for everyone, which is probably an understatement, but I think it's worth watching for Barker's ambition if nothing else. It's also unlike anything I've seen.

    Hostage (2005)

Whoa. This looks bad. Really bad. When I see something like this get 3 out of 4 stars from Ebert, it makes me wonder if those guys were having a laugh at everyone's expense sometimes.

    Nightbreed (1990)

We are two months from Halloween. I'm putting this out there early as a vote for a Halloween episode. If you haven't seen it, watch it. The movie is totally nuts and worth every second of your time.

    Cool World (1992)

Bump. One, for the film. Two, for the backstory.

    The Last Dragon (1985)

This movie cost $10 million to make? I haven't seen it, so maybe I'm off base, but it doesn't seem like the type of movie that would require that much of a budget. Was it music rights? The Glow? Cocaine?!?!

National Lampoon's Men in White (1998)

If it never made its way to DVD, are people even going to be able to find it for viewing? Is it streaming anywhere?

Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)

For anyone interested, this is streaming free if you have an Amazon Prime membership. At this point, are there people who don't have a membership?!?! This movie is...indescribable. It's good, but in a surprising, incoherent, batshit-crazy way. I started watching it pretty late last night, and instead of turning it off and going to bed, I had to finish it. At this point, I honestly can't tell if there's too much to talk about or enough to talk about for the crew. Regardless of interest, I think this film is worth watching. At the very least, watch it for Dean Wormer.
  14. I said Maron because, even though he does have the "seen everything" vibe, he still seems to show a lot of interest and wants to find out what makes people tick. Why they do what they do, why they like what they like. He gets the biography as part of the bigger picture. And you nailed it on Gourley. If you want to get into an ingredients breakdown, maybe I'd call it 2 parts Gourley, 1 part Maron? Anyways, thanks again on mentioning this podcast! I'm eating it up. The only thing I need to do a better job of is keeping track of the films Bradley mentions. Does he have any resources that list films people should definitely see? Because I listen in my car, it's not easy to write these things down.

    Episode 169.5 - Minisode 169.5

Fair enough. Even though he's not the star, he was one of my favorite parts in Boogie Nights. I don't say this flippantly: he should have gotten a nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Although, I may not be the most credible here. I even thought he was good in Cop and a Half.

    Not Boogie Nights?!?!

    Episode 169.5 - Minisode 169.5

Oh, Jason is going to love Bratz. This movie will be a nice change of pace from the 1980's slum, but it's an odd choice for sure. I say "odd" because I didn't know such a thing existed. Ever.
  18. I'm about 10 or so episodes deep into this podcast. I'm hooked. This morning, I heard Bradley saying "yeah...yeah, yeah" during an interview. My first thought: this guy is like Marc Maron. Not sure why, but he really reminds me of Maron with his approach and interest level. Maybe with a little Matt Gourley sprinkled in.

    For Richer or Poorer (1997)

I had to summon The Google with an inquiry about "Smash Mouth Shrek chant" due to my confusion. I don't think I've seen Shrek, and had no idea about the connection. I saw the Smash Mouth Twitter rebuttal, and hell hath no fury like a Smash Mouth scorned.

    Origin Stories Bonus: Mackenzie Astin

He seems like a good dude, and I was shocked that his dad is still alive. I thought he had passed years ago. This line talking about HDTGM is amazing. "So the fact that there exists now, in this day and age, an opportunity for people to have that communal experience looking at, like, the worst possible fires ever [cracking up] with smart and funny commentary…that’s a good experience, you know?"

    For Richer or Poorer (1997)

I was looking for a movie to watch last night and saw Zoom is now on demand. I almost watched it, but then I remembered I needed to finish Birdemic, which is currently on Amazon Prime. I might tackle Zoom this weekend.

    For Richer or Poorer (1997)

I looked through Tim Allen's filmography. I'm not sure what to say. He's an absolute untapped mine of bad films. So many with RT scores under 20%, with several not even making double digits. Several that weren't even close to having their box office hauls beat the budget. Zoom was a huge bust. Crazy on the Outside made $88k at the box office and holds an 8% on RT. Others in the film: Sigourney Weaver, JK Simmons, Ray Liotta, Kelsey Grammer.

    Timeline (2003)

As far as time travel films go, this makes Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure look like a master class production.
  25. Well, I have a long way to go until I get to your episode! I like to start at the beginning and go sequentially in most podcasts. With an hour in the car each day, it shouldn't take me long to catch up! I only included the Nightmare series because of the time it came out. These three franchises were staples for my friends and I at just about every sleepover. Definitely a different animal than Halloween and Friday the 13th. I think I fall more on the slasher/suspense side of horror films than the Nightmare style. Carpenter is an underappreciated genius. His music is great, and he's made some great films, though I've admittedly only seen about half of them. Tough to pick a favorite! They Live or Big Trouble in Little China are awesome.
