After Amy's weirdly petty attempt to take down Re-Animator - "Devin Trump"? - I watched this movie pretty ready to hear this movie be torn apart. And like Devin, I was surprised that the film had as much going for it as they did. But it just doesn't work. As a kid I was disappointed that Steve Martin wasn't very Steve Martin-y in the film. As an adult I think he is TOO Steve Martin. Paul Simon once said that no matter what he does he just can't sound sincere. He tries, desperately, but it always comes out wry or ironic. That's how I feel about Steve Martin here. He's actually giving a good performance, but his natural Steve Martiness simply overshadows the performance which ends up crippling the character.
