I like to think that moments ago he sat up in bed in a cold sweat and said, "Something's wrong..."

In Japan, that would be the classic "someone's talking about me" sneeze.

So...who would everyone cosplay as if given the opportunity to go to a show?

Follow up: How would you overdo it and thus embarrass yourself?

I mean... ideally I'd pick a cosplay that matches the show I'm going to. Like say I saw a live show doing Surf Ninjas, I'd wear a loud shirt and one of those stupid headbands. But if I was to pick a character from any HDTGM movie I've seen, I'd probably go with Nephthys from Gods of Egypt, because I absolutely loooooved her colorful wings.

And if I could overdo it, I'd make them mobile so they could open and close and probably hit people with them.

I'm too lazy though, so that will never happen.

I think history is going to judge Blake Plissken very harshly. He was supposed to be Snake but he is making a quip on a line that is said to Snake not something that Snake ever says. If I ran Largo I'd ban him for life. Probably a good thing I am not a club owner.

Oh no doubt. Not saying he pulled it off well, but I'm glad the attempt was recognized. It's a lesson for the future. (For me the lesson would be don't cosplay at these events unless embarrassment is desired.)

  3. I was up at 3am, so I listened to the ep super late lol. I'm so proud of Cam Bert for that comment. I was actually sharing a bit of it yesterday with a SoCal friend who hasn't seen the movie, but is familiar with L.A.

Glad Blake's joke was recognized too.

I also feel bad for helping digress the Escape from L.A post after the paywall crap even more with my letterboxd question. Hunting for movie-related posts this time must've been a pain in the ass. Sorry, Paul.

  4. I know I promised I wouldn't bring it up again, but I just read something over in Reddit by a person who said they came over to this thread for the first time and saw that we were being "divisive" and "obnoxious" to one another regarding the whole paywall issue. They went on to say that it was causing some sort of friction between regular posters.

Just to throw in my 2 cents... I never added my opinions on the paywall in this thread, because by the time I saw the movie and listened to the podcast, the discussion on that was already pretty much over, and as had been stated, I would have nothing further to add that hadn't been said already.

Because idk, the regular posters here work well enough together to know when enough is enough and move on without belittling others or resorting to petty insults over differing opinions. I've been in various internet communities long enough to see some pretty ugly behavior and I believe I've said it before, and I'll say it again, this forum is one of the nicest communities I've seen in a long time.

It could very well be an outsider not understanding that a lot of the teasing is done with familiarity. Not saying everyone came out of that debate happy as a lark, but as for the regular posters I always see, things seem to be carrying on like normal.

Also possible they didn't finish reading the whole thread or only skimmed? Idk

  5. Well, since I still want people to play my game...

I was gonna play, but it switched to the title game...

But the boldest I got to offer... I'm not a country music fan, but they play it at work and I remember some years ago this song by I guess Collin Raye would play and I hated it because it's boldest claim...

And if I were you I'd fall in love with me

...I'm sorry WHAT? You think you're such hot stuff that the person you're pining for SHOULD fall in love with you? Or is it you want to BE them so you can fall in love with yourself? I'm so confused. Can I offer you a mirror? I can paint a wedding veil on it or something. Would that help?

Also the earlier line in the verse

But if I were you I'd promise to live life for all it's worth

like holy shit thanks for telling me I'm not living life well enough and that you can live my life better than me. Please see your way to the door.

As I looked up "If I were you" to go over the lyrics, I discovered there's another country song by Gene Watson called "If I were you I would fall in love with me". Calm down, country music.

  6. The thing that I hated most was the promise of a much, much better movie just on the other side of the credits. Cuba and Brazil are invading Miami! Cuervo's buddies are massing in Anaheim getting ready to invade the mainland! I want to watch that movie way more than anything they gave us. And yes, I know the idea now is that once Snake flips the switch the invasion likely dies because the invaders have no electricity, but surely they brought flashlights!

I know we all want the Cleveland chapter too, but who's up for finally making Florida an island to do "Escape From Miami"?

  7. The Hershe stuff did seem pretty odd... like I liked her character in general, but the set up was a joke pushed a bit too far, so it was cringeworthy.

And when you think about how the movie is set up at the beginning why is Cuervo Jones (seriously wtf is that name) automatically the bad guy? Like besides dressing him up to look more like a typical anarchist terrorist what were the things that led us to believe he was the villain of this story? A bunch of people seemed to have been wrongly deported for simply not being what the "majority" of America liked and to me he seemed to be just a leader of a resistance that wanted to go against the grain. Of course then you see him murder a bunch of people for fun and really just be super in to anarchy but that was what, an hour into the film? Until that point I was kinda on his side and thought Snake should just like die because who wants to help a tyrant of a president who did away with the Constitution so that he could rule for a lifetime? And then after everything was all said and done he did exactly what Cuervo was going to do anyway!

I agree... it would've been better if Cuervo wasn't shown to be so much a tyrant as just a resistance leader, because it's obvious that the president is the real dick in the movie. I think Snake knows this too. Maybe this is why he didn't just kill Cuervo when he had the chance. Snake isn't interested in taking life, he just wants to get the goods and get out to save his own life. He's not that interested in following the evil presidents orders.

And to go back to an earlier point, it didn't surprise me so much that Snake didn't recognize the all powerful president. Because he's just off doing his own thing and gives no shits about politics. I doubt he watches much TV.

  8. An actual conversation last night between my roommate (EternalSammich) and me.

Her: You don't remember the plot of An American Tale?

Me: Some mice go to America and Fievel gets separated from his family. Then they sing "Somewhere Out There."

Her: You don't remember the cats?

    Me: ...no?

    Her: The big orange one?

Me: He was voiced by Dom DeLuise.

My only recollection of the sequel is the sister trying to become a saloon dancer.

(The worst part of this is that I'm sure I still have a giant plush of Fievel somewhere at my parents house.)

I have some follow up for Escape From L.A.

Okay, so Snake's told if he pushes the button, he's going to throw the world back into the dark ages and they'll lose all their historical information. Does this mean that it was expected that by 2013 that BOOKS would be nonexistent??? I mean sure, digital copies are becoming more popular, but there'd have to be a good number of people hoarding away personal libraries.

AlSO, the whole power-down-the-world thing... okay so people have to go back to living without electricity... like how do the satellites control that? And wouldn't the satellites shut themselves down? But okay, let's give the benefit of the doubt, that somehow these amazing satellites are capable of shutting down energy in general... power grids, backup generators, solar, wind, and so on...

You have a new problem now, a bit more dire than just living without electricity.

Nuclear. Which we know is still relied upon because of the submarine he uses. You'll still have nuclear power plants and nuclear powered units that have live and spent fuel rods that you won't be able to do anything about. Kind of a huge oversight by the president, considering there's a good number of nuclear power plants within the US. Sure, it's not like a bomb going off, but you're still gonna end up with a lot of fallout radiation there. Thanks, Snake, you've just contaminated my hometown.

  9. JammerLea, I'm just wondering how there are so many iconic movies you DON'T remember!

Do you and June have the same movie erasing disorder!?

I've already been joking about that. A lot of the iconic ones I haven't seen in years. Then again there's a lot of movies I've seen in recent years I don't recall too well. Having reviews usually helps jog my memory for the recent ones thankfully.

  10. Thanks! What I ended up doing was moving the old movies I know I've seen but can't remember to their own list and removing them from my watched. Since I don't want to completely forget that I at least SAW them. I probably missed some, since I'm in a hurry to finish so I can go to work lol I'll double check later.

I added my letterboxd url to my profile in case anyone wants to friend me, I'll friend back.

Off to work for now. If I have any bad customers I'll just be thinking of Snake Plissken's hair.

  11. Oh man, I finally caught up with everything just now. Glad there's some good movie discussion going on!

My roommate and I watched the movie on Sunday and we honestly didn't think it was that bad for what it was, in a "we've seen worse" sort of approach. I mean obviously the plot is recycled, the effects are awful, etc, but it wasn't so outlandishly bizarre to make it easy to really tear apart.

We were hoping for some stronger synth music though, so that was disappointing.

I thought Kurt Russel looked pretty good too compared to himself in Escape from New York, except for:

    1. Not attractive with the shirt off

    2. The horrible lighting in the sub highlighted every wrinkle on his face

Also agree that Cleveland sounds like a much more exciting story.

Also agree that giving Snake a virus which would more likely HINDER his ability to perform his given task is a really stupid idea. And those weak coughs were pathetic.

So yeah, I don't have anything too outstanding to say. We enjoyed it for the bad movie it was, then immediately after watched Prince of Darkness lol.

I'm looking forward to Surf Ninjas. I'm pretty sure I rented that on more than one occasion as a child. I don't remember it, so I'm looking forward to revisiting that embarrassment.

On that topic, for those of you with letterboxd accounts... do you include movies you know you watched when you were younger, even if you don't remember them?

  12. Okay, I finished the playlist while working on some art. I even tried to arrange everything so some of the songs aren't as jarring when leading into another... or whatever. I'm no music expert. I tried.

    New URL http://tinyurl.com/zmhcq26

I'm missing one song that Cameron suggested though as it's already been removed from youtube and I couldn't remember what it was. If anyone remembers, lemme know, I'll throw it back in.

The problems going to be a week from now when most of the songs get taken down future readers at HDTGM forums will have no Idea what the hell we are talking about..

That's their loss lol (and mine RIP NYE Mariah Carey video)

I've got some errands to run, so I'll add the other songs to the playlist a bit later.

Well, crap! If you you're doing a "Makes Me Happy" Playlist it has to have one of my favorite songs of all time--much to the embarrassment of some people that I am very close to. I'm posting the Live version because I want to give you all a visual of how I dance to any and all types of music--which is also a major source of embarrassment.

Nothing embarrassing about that! It's a good song!

Okay, I need to slow down

This may sound dumb (and a little like charity) but why not crowd fund that shit? I'd be happy to kick in a few bucks here and there.

    Positivity: It's a movement.

...you know you may have given me an idea to toy with. Otherwise I was thinking of opening up commissions again after I finish up the few I'd had on hold from the holidays. I'm one of those people who has to provide something in return for any financial support.

In the meantime, I'm all for some music sharing!

  16. Guys, like please understand. I'm not mad about the change at all and if I could afford to subscribe to support even just HDTGM I would. But I'm at a point in my life where my insurances have gone up and my work is screwing me over with some of the worst hours I've had in the nearly 10 years I've worked with the company. So until my hours improve or I can snag a new job, that $5/mo actually makes a difference as someone on the low income level.

Well, it probably would have been better if this had happened closer to its launch or if a head's up reminder had been sent out, but...what're you gonna do? It's out of their hands.

ETA: I'm seeing a lot of people pissed off about this. Some guy on Reddit was like, "I listen to every episode and this is the first I've heard about it." My advice: stop fast forwarding through the commercials as the Howl App is mentioned on literally every episode. If you had a baby the day this was announced, you'd have a freaking toddler by now!

I get people's aggravation, especially if you can't afford the app, but damn--it's not exactly out of the blue...

There's always going to be someone angry about those sorts of changes, but this isn't exactly an uncommon thing with content published online lol

HDTGM is the only earwolf podcast my roommate and I listen to, because we have a love for bad movies. I wonder if it's possible to ask for a way to purchase individual episodes. We were planning to watch Glitter again with a friend sometime and it would've been nice to have her listen to that episode along with it.
