  1. This movie was so perfect for this time of year.  I happened to watch both movies (original and remake) by coincidence.  I definitely feel like the original version of the film feels more sensible than the remake.  Edward Woodward's Sgt. Howie is more calm and ever so slowly builds to frustration.  The original is full of songs, sexual energy and they go out of their way to explain their customs to Sgt. Howie.  They give him ample opportunities to not go to the May Day festivities and of course he chooses to go.  I do like religious juxtaposition of the original and how Sgt. Howie has his place now as a martyr for his beliefs.  I also do like that Sgt. Howie gets to warn/curse Lord Summerisle that if the crops fail again, only Lord Summerisle would do as the next sacrifice.

Anyway, great film.... and surprisingly musical.  I forgot how much music was in the film.

  2. Okay. So...I've had a lot of time to think about this one, and I thought I had it nailed down for a while. But then a movie became available to rent on Amazon, and I had to call an audible. My whole goal in making my next pick was to choose a movie that was unlike anything we've done before.

I'm going to give a warning that this movie is probably not for everyone. It's a weird high-concept movie, and even among my small group of friends who usually like most of the same stuff, there's a lot of disagreement. While I personally LOVE this movie, I think it might be quite divisive. But I'm hoping it will give us some good conversation.

Anyway, without further ado, my pick is...

The Lure is a movie I saw at a festival last year, and I totally fell in love with it. It's our first foreign language musical, so turn on them subtitles :) Basically, it's a Polish musical about two man-eating mermaids who become lounge singers.

    (But I hope not)

OMG This was one of my I-kinda-want-to-pick-this-next movies. Cool!

  3. I love the Friday the 13th movies. I know they're not good but I have a soft spot for them. I think it's because 1 through 8 actually have a real continuity to them which is weird and rare for a horror franchise.

Believe me, I'd love it if I could get her to watch the whole franchise, but either our schedules don't match up or she's reluctant. I did get her to watch a good number of the Hellraiser Franchise.

  4. I tried to skim a lot of the thread, but I fwasn't sure if the fact that TimeCop being based on a comic series was mentioned at all? Mike Richardson & Mark Verheiden wrote the comic and then Mark went on to write the screenplay. IDK I just find this interesting. I kind of want to hunt down those comics sometime.

Some notes I forgot to mention earlier.

At the start of the movie, those horses should've been swiss cheese after being shot at.

Someone mentions "Carbon Testing" gold. Radiocarbon dating can't be done on inorganic material though, as far as I know. Can it be tested? Also wouldn't it not have time to age if it was just instantly brought back?

I was amused at the safety precaution of using a seat belt, etc, and yet the car disappears right after they go through the time portal.

I'm pretty impressed by how much everyone is into the time travel timelines, both the podcast and this forum. You guys are amazing.

I definitely enjoyed this movie more than I thought I would. I loved the Ron Silver melding together scene in particular.

  5. Also in case you haven't seen this here's the music video for the closing credits song "Time Won't Let Me" featuring a shirtless JVCD rocking a harmonica.

He's wearing a vest, but I appreciate this post. I also appreciate that this video is almost a refresher on the film. JCVD is doing the splits over the counter and dodging that truck!!

  6. I just want to chime in that I really liked "Old Souls" and felt it was my favorite song. Paul Williams mentions it in the documentary as being one of his favorite among all the songs he's written.

I didn't really know anything Paul Williams prior to watching this movie and I'm actually glad I got to learn a bit about him. I, of course, recognize some of the music he wrote that other people sang. It's pretty awesome.

I totally agree with Cam Bert. I can't imagine anyone showing up to a second audition after pretty much being sexually harassed at the first audition.

I forgot to mention that in the documentary Brian De Palma mentions that once distribution was settled with Fox they got threatened by 3 lawsuits. One was for the name "Phantom" because of the Phantom comic book. The other was "Swan Song" which was previously mentioned. The third was by the family of a musician that had got killed on set by being electrocuted just like Beef in the film. The family felt it was too similar or something to the actual death of their family member..

I've seen it. I enjoyed it. It's a fun film. I don't think it's a really bad bad movie. Just low budget cult b-grade film. I'd recommend it.

  8. I remember vividly being a little kid and seeing the video rental boxes at a VHS rental store and really wanting to see it because it looked so cool from that cover! I kind of forgot this movie existed until a few years ago when I got back into watching movies and horror being a favorite genre in particular. I kind of had this film on a "watch list" in my mind.

Having seen this film: Wow. It's so bad. I feel like every suggested "fix" or explanation people give in the podcast and these forums is far more interesting and enriching than this film actually is.

I feel like this film had a budget for cars and explosives and hoped to make a movie around that based on a lazy version of High Plains Drifter.

The only things I liked about this film were the explosions and some of the over acting from Clint Howard, Skank and Gutterboy. Oh and the soundtrack. It was a good soundtrack.
