Musical Mondays Week 27 Baby Driver

I think Tarantino's racism is more from fetishizing people of color (specifically black and Asian people). That's still a really negative thing but, I guess in the realm of racism, it's kind of far down there.

All he had to do was say "I heard rumors but didn't know anything concrete. And certainly not the extent that it was happening. I'll work to be better and more vigilant in the future." That's it. It doesn't excuse him but this dancing is embarrassing and harmful. Tarantino looks better right now for just admitting it. And there's no way Tarantino is less racist and misogynist and creepy than he seems.

He's not the most hated cast member now... If anything, I assumed people liked Ansel Elgort but I only knew him from Fault In Our Stars.

Episode 177 - The Disaster Artist

The final act didn't ruin the whole movie for me while watching, but it really leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

Musical Mondays Week 27 Baby Driver

This is how I discuss movies because all my friends say I don't like anything. I've had to consciously start conversations with "I loved this movie" before listing any issues I have with the movie. To avoid digressing too much again, I agree with whay drone had said so far. Great movie with an okay second half, not enough female character development.

Musical Mondays Week 27 Baby Driver

I remember people were ripping on the disaffected, lazy generation but I would be 14 or something. I kind of cared but its hard to get invested when I wasn't even working yet. I think it's mildly funny now to think that no one really talks about us anymore. It's all Baby Boomers and Millennials. Edit: it certainly feels like there is more crap thrown at millennials than generation x but that might have been because I was too young to really remember it all. Out might be I'm more aware of this type of writing or just more opinionated news stories. I don't know but it definitely feels like everything is "millennials and what they're ruining today" or "leave us millennials alone"

Musical Mondays Week 27 Baby Driver

I'm very on the cusp between Generation X and millennial. Depending on the source, my birth year occasionally gets lumped in with you dirty, dirty millennials. I love seeing people who are one year younger than me act like it's such a disgusting label refusing to believe they might be a millennial. It just means the years you were born. Some personality traits or general cultural ideas are ascribed to every generation but they don't all apply to every person in a generation.

    Episode 177.5 - Minisode 177.5

Chuck Norris made his name doing martial arts and Mickey Rourke had a boxing phase. But for a lot of those guys it was a long time ago. Coutore was the most recent legit fighter right? Unless I'm missing someone. It would be like asking which WWE wrestler you could take in real life and picking Kurt Angle.

    Episode 177.5 - Minisode 177.5

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. He picked the one Expendable who is a legit fighter, did mixed martial arts and wrestling (non professional).

I don't know enough about how the awards shows operate. I know they have a ton of overlap but that's about it. This is interesting.

Episode 177 - The Disaster Artist

I'm glad Oscars So white gained the traction it did. I legit font think Moonlight would have won otherwise (despite being deserving) and maybe not even nominated. Considering how strong films with people of color were this year. Granted, I still see movies like Get Out or Big Sick getting major snubs because they aren't typical Oscar movies. Not entirely shut out but Best Picture? I don't know. I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

Preach it, sister! I was not a fan of hers for a long time but all these movies plus Lady Bird have changed my opinion of her.

    HDTGM and the Oscars

I can see Franco being the most likely but I think that's largely because of how weak lead actors have been this year. Or the great lead actor performances are in not typical of the Oscars type movies.

    HDTGM and the Oscars

I really hope so because it's a wonderful performance. But the Oscars are a bit stuffier. I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't get nominated for anything. Especially with as strong as this year has been for movies.
  15. I originally didn't have much interest in seeing All The Money In The World but replacing Spacey this quickly made me very interested. It's such a scorched earth policy on Spacey that I feel I need to support it

Episode 177 - The Disaster Artist

I just read this again and it sounds like I'm side eyeing picking Disaster Artist. I wasn't. Considering this podcast's role in the movie and The Room in general, focusing on Disaster Artist is an excellent use of this podcast. This threw me because, for some reason, I thought June played the actress playing Lisa. I spent way too long thinking June completely transformed herself into the role. I was amazed because it looked nothing like her...until I saw June in the background of a scene. Then I realized I'm an idiot. But the Disaster Artist is phenomenal. I was really worried from when I first heard about the movie. I didn't see how you make a comedy about a comedy and actually be good. I just didn't see how it could be funnier than The Room. But it's so so so good. Even better than the reviews in my opinion. I don't want to come across as though Tommy Wiseau is some misunderstood genius and The Room is a secret masterpiece or anything like that. It humanizes him very powerfully. It presents him (and I'm curious how accurate this is) as someone who really did bring out other people's desire to fulfill their own dreams. I spent a large part of the movie on the verge of tears because of how well Greg, Tommy and their struggles were portrayed. It makes me appreciate The Room and Tommy Wiseau in a different way than as total incompetence on screen.

Episode 177 - The Disaster Artist

I tried to watch The Room again for this week and YouTube only had it on one of those swirling stars, slightly sped up versions and it was too much for me. Obviously, everyone's library system is different. I liver in a big enough city that it's really good. Inter-library loans are super easy meaning I have a functionally unlimited selection of movies. And I live about 10 minutes from my nearest location. So it's great for me but I've also just ehhhhh I'll spend the 2.99 to stream it. So, I get why others don't want to. I just push then so much because it's a great public resource that so few people utilize and there really are a ton of free movies unavailable anywhere online. I think they also have books.

Episode 177 - The Disaster Artist

For 1), they did a surprising amount of movies I saw and enjoyed as a kid. Airborne I probably saw at least half a dozen times on TBS. I didn't watch it again for the new episode but I'll concede that it's not as cool as I thought in middle school. But I saw about half a dozen more as a kid that I liked. For 3), I agree but I'll again recommend check your local library. Other than Garbage Pail Kids and the upcoming Free Jack, I've found all of them in my local library system if they weren't available on Amazon. I'm not too upset about the only on YouTube ones. At least I'm not paying for it I guess but I don't mind spending a couple bucks to rent it on Amazon. Having to buy an out of print DVD is pretty rough though. The currently in theatres I can see being an issue for others because it's expensive for a podcast.

Episode 177 - The Disaster Artist

If the movies had been spread out instead of back to back, it wouldn't have been so bad in my opinion. But it almost made Bratz creek like a breath of fresh air.

Episode 177 - The Disaster Artist

I don't have a ranking for the full list yet but my number 1 is EASILY Fate Of The Furious. It's one of my favorite movies of 2017 even without HDTGM.

Episode 177 - The Disaster Artist

I'll admit I can't defend Lucy on any of its technical merits. It's a garbage movie that makes no sense but I loved it once I gave in to how dumb it is. It looks like the people who didn't like it sounds like they had high expectations. I had extremely low expectations and liked it. I wonder if that's part of it.

Episode 177 - The Disaster Artist

Lucy I legit loved in spite of its flaws. Valerian, well, I can see how it was a good idea. I think both would make good episodes but I'd definitely try to defend Lucy even though it's indefensible.
  23. So, what if she did everything right and was a good person on day 11 then blows off day 12 because being a good person didn't end the cycle? Is she stuck with whatever she did on day 12 no matter what? That seems like a potentially cruel message from the universe (or potentially great depending on when your lazy day is in the cycle).

Musical Mondays Week 26 The Muppet Movie

This for sure. Movin' Right Along is a song I could hum or get stuck in my head. But Rainbow Connection is on another level of greatness for me. So, yes, I start crying about 10 seconds into this. Then I cry again throughout the movie because it just works so well. The positive, endearing message of friendship, and sticking to your dreams. That's definitely a great take on The Muppets. I think it weirdly mirrors The Muppet Movie because that is clearly Jim Henson telling his life story and trying to make it in Hollywood.
