  1. Even for a live episode one was especially visuals-focused.

What I gathered was that Megaforce was created collectively by the the governments of the world basically to enforce the status quo. There was a leftist uprising in Gamibia(?) and the Che guy sells his expertise to lead. He doesn't care about the cause (he doesn't even speak the language), just the money. The heroes of the movie are trying to crush this revolution because leftist revolutions upset the balance of power.

If there is only one law in Cool World and no one has ever broken it, why do they even have Brad Pitt as a police officer? Why is there even a police department?

The police go after the problematic minstrel-y gang when the rabbit says they cheated him at dice

  3. There was a lot of insane stuff in this movie they didn't have time to discuss, like the 2 dimensional sets and the sketchy, half-finished-looking animations that would fly by. There's exposition happening and suddenly a cartoon dog with sunglasses materializes and makes goofy noises.

Incidentally when I was looking for that screenshot I saw there's a short part in Holly's house where Brad Pitt looks in a funhouse mirror and it distorts him to have the a similar look as he does at the end when he becomes a cartoon. That's called foreshadowing and it means this movie is art.

Do we think Brad Pitt's horrible acting was due to having nothing to act against? He was still pretty bad when the other human was around

  4. This is a case where the terrible film was actually right and the podcast was wrong. It actually is "Pandora's jar". The wikipedia page has a section on why we say box:

    Quote

The mistranslation of pithos, a large storage jar, as "box" is usually attributed to the sixteenth century humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam when he translated Hesiod's tale of Pandora into Latin. Hesiod's pithos refers to a large storage jar, often half-buried in the ground, used for wine, oil or grain. It can also refer to a funerary jar. Erasmus, however, translated pithos into the Latin word pyxis, meaning "box".[15] The phrase "Pandora's box" has endured ever since.

Also, regarding the movie getting myths confused, there is a precedent for rainbow bridges, but not in Greek myth. Norse mythology has a rainbow bridge connecting Earth and where the gods live.

  5. A correction for Jason: He says the wrestlers just came out of nowhere and weren't sharing space with the gymnasts but that is not true.

During the montage where they play the Stargrove song, in the background you can see someone set up a mat on the spring floor for some reason and two guys are wrestling on it.

There's no reason for them to be doing this here on the specialized gymnastics equipment when all they need is a floor, but it sets up the next shot where they watch Stargrove on the trampoline, which is also on the spring floor for unknown reasons.

  6. I was delighted Amy and Paul mentioned Harold Lloyd’s Safety Last, probably my favorite silent-era comedy. The giant clock Lloyd dangles from toward the end of the movie was actually a set built on top of a building in downtown L.A. The filmmakers used different camera angles to make it appear Lloyd was hanging over a sheer drop, though he was actually several stories above the roof of the building where the set was built. There are some great YouTube videos showing how the building climbing stunts were done.

Came here to mention this. Here's a good visual depiction

  7. First time is during the downhill section where he is just riding down an unclear path and ends up taking out another competitor.

Just wanted to bring attention to this because that actually looked like quite a dangerous stunt, the guy actually gets hit by another bike

  8. They spent enough time showing him try to get the backflip that I was sure it would turn into a Big Thing that would help him Win The Race but that turned out to be nothing. He does a backflip but still only won because Bart stopped to let him catch up.

In the same vein it was weird how much of his preparation was doing tricks when the actual event was a race.

    Random thoughts:

    - Based on the name and hype, I was expecting Hell Track to be more like The Running Man

    - I thought the diner he worked at would sponsor him

    - It's very rude that he rides his bike through other peoples' lawns, ruining their grass

    - Everyone in the town lives a life so regimented that he can time his paper delivery down to the minute

    - The parade they threw before the race was really boring, just a bunch of cars driving down the road

    - Lori's dress at the dance was like some Klaus Nomi stuff

    - $11 million budget and they couldn't stop cars from driving around in the background of shots?

    - Movie presumes you only have one year to get into college and then you're out of luck forever

    - All those last-minute rule changes would surely be illegal
