Congrats grudlian. I had a good feeling about that comment. I gotta say- I’m actually pretty stoked about Blues Brothers 2000 because JONNY LANG! I may just watch the minute and a half that he’s on screen. Worth it.

    Episode 192 - Striptease: LIVE!

It's funny that both Showgirls and this movie portray exotic dancers as having heavily choreographed and teched dance routines. Although I am sure this kind of thing must exist somewhere, most strip clubs just have women who do slow seductive moving , walking, and acrobatics (like you mentioned EV). A person doing an entire routine would seem out of place. While on the other hand there are Burlesque shows and clubs, which are a little bit closer to what what is portrayed in this movie. A lot of times Burlesque is tongue in cheek or funny, but usually has a whole choreographed number. Women in Burlesque clubs would look ridiculous if they just slowly grinded. This movie sort of marries the 2 styles. What the girls of the Eager Beaver do is closer to something like The Thunder from Down Under.

    Episode 192 - Striptease: LIVE!

So I am NO expert, but I did have a close friend who was a stripper while we were in college and can impart SOME of the knowledge I got from her. I also read Diablo Cody's book - which is not just stripping but is also sex work... and it's a pretty great book. Again - all second hand knowledge. The Eager Beaver is a strange club in that it does seem to run much more like a Burlesque show than a strip club... seeing that, as Gigitastic pointed out, Demi is never working the floor. That is THE ESSENCE of how you make any money at a club. The scenes where the dancers are just chilling back stage before they go on is not really how it works. You can certainly take breaks but if you want money you have to be wheeling and dealing the crowd. You need to be introducing yourself to customers and asking people if they want private dances and special services. Dancers, like many industries, absolutely rely on regular and returning customers. If you are a dancer, your bills are PAID if you have a guy who returns to see you over and over. My friend had at least one regular who showered her with gifts and money. She always said he was a businessman who did not have time for a girlfriend and preferred to just spend his time and money on strippers. He would get to know her by returning night after night... and also he got to see her naked regularly which apparently was enough for him. POINT IS - she didn't make very much money on the center stage dances.

    Titanic

I would be surprised if anyone watched this... I have, but I am a little like Amy about Titanic. It's just this story (The history itself, not just the film) I find endlessly fascinating. Anyways... it's kind of cold and forensic, but still pretty harrowing.

    Titanic

As a storytelling function, I always assumed that perhaps the "Let's stretch her legs" and any other thing Rose couldn't have seen first hand may have been filled out by the Paxton and wreckage crew. Rose is telling the story, but are we really viewing it through Rose's eyes directly or are we experiencing it ourselves as listeners of her story? In that way, I buy that the crew listening to her story could be filling in the holes themselves. (Might be a stretch) Also - I feel like it is important to note that I can forgive a lot of those types of moments - including superfluous dialogue about there not being enough lifeboats and things like that because JC was trying to make THE movie about Titanic... A glowing love letter. This film contains vignettes of almost every piece of folklore about Titanic in some form or another. This is supposed to be the end-all-be-all definitive film of this story. Those little moments are meant to be a little bit educational and quite frankly at this point most people know what they know about Titanic because of this movie. When people make biopics about famous and historical figures they have a choice to tell a small story about a section of their life (like Lincoln?) or tell a HUGE story about their entire life (like... Ray maybe?) and Cameron chose the HUGE story. Everything had to be included. He really tried to get it right.

    Titanic

I think the backlash is partially due to the dismissal of the frivolous romantic desires of (SOME) teenage girls to be sure, but it is certainly also due to a few other things. 1. The sheer juggernaut success of this movie and any movie will naturally come with contrarian dislike (genuine as that dislike may be, there are plenty of people who hated it because of how big it was and how it was just everywhere you looked at that time) 2. That fucking song... that goddamn song was SO incredibly ubiquitous. Sappy ass, shallow, generalized love ballads tend to not have the greatest lasting power. I mean... My Heart Will Go On is pretty much a joke at this point and is rarely used in anyway that isn't riddled with irony. I can only imagine that people would let out a collective groan if it was played in a public venue... short of weddings or Celine live in Vegas? 3. LEO - I think the American film viewing public as a whole does not love wispy teenage heartthrobs and Leo was King of that world in 1997. All that being said - JC knew what the best way to tug at peoples tear ducts, and it would have been really difficult to have a core story that was much different than the Jack and Rose story. To frame the entire movie you had to have a woman (ostensibly because of the "Women and children" first rule) tell the story because she is the most likely to have survived. You also had to have a person that would be able to tell a lucid/mostly adult understanding of the incident AND someone who would still be alive when the wreckage had been found so she had to be at the OLDEST a teenager. Most of the contemporary testimony of the titanic is from the children who survived and their memories are usually scaled down to the confusion and chaos of the night it sank and not the experience of being on the boat. It also had to be from the perspective of a 1st class passenger because we needed to have access to all parts of the boat... and a steerage passenger because that's what we all would have been. All that being said - I love this fucking goddamn shit show movie. I cry every time. And by no coincidence I was 16 when it came out. Aside: I have literally experienced the Goonies Conundrum since I showed it to my husband as an adult and he did not understand the appeal at all.

    Episode 191 - Rad: LIVE!

Jason mentions that the movie would be better off if they had switched the Helltrack sequence with the bike dancing sequence. The funny thing is that I saw this movie only once many years ago and that is exactly how I remember it happening. When the bike dancing scene showed up in the first half of the movie I was so confused because I would have sworn that it had been the climax. (An unrelated side that there may have been substances imbibed when watching this at that time... and this time, too.) Since this is how I remembered it, I have to completely agree with Jason. Also - I never saw this as a kid but I saw BMX Bandits a bunch. Is anyone else like that, they saw one but not the other?

    Episode 191 - Rad: LIVE!

I am ON BOARD with this Paperboy movie. It seems like mid century to 80s pop culture would be rife with paperboy vignettes to pull from, but for some reason at this moment I can only think of the episode of King Of The Hill where Bobby and Dale share a paper route... and the kid from Better Off Dead. Do paperboys actually exist anymore?

Musical Mondays Week 41 Hello, Dolly!

Hee hee! It's almost as if the events of the movie are the process of gelding the horse.

Musical Mondays Week 41 Hello, Dolly!

Ha! YAS! Many of the lyrics refer to having a woman clean something out. Honestly for me that makes the context of the song better, because if you take it literally then he just wants a maid to clean his house... if he's really talking about her taking care of the other business at home... it actually makes me like him better.

Musical Mondays Week 41 Hello, Dolly!

Yeah... if those movies were made in the 40s, 50s, 60s it's no mystery. They could NOT get enough of the Belle Epoch. The 40s, 50s, and 60s were hung up on the edwardian period. (A good bit 70s fashion referenced this period a lot too.) The 70s and 80s were hung up on the 50s and 60s (Grease, American Graffiti, Back to the Future, Peggy Sue Got Married, Hairspray... Happy Days!) The 90s were way into the 70s (Disco was Baaaaaack - I'll have to check on the movies/TV. The only thing I can think of of the top of my head is Dazed and Confused and That 70s show) And of course our culture's current obsession is the 90s - Fashion and movie reboots, but not necessarily a lot of movies about the 90s.

Musical Mondays Week 41 Hello, Dolly!

I get the impression that Thornton Wilder wrote this whole stupid scenario because he thought the word “Vandergelder” was funny and wanted to see how many times he could get people to say it.

Musical Mondays Week 41 Hello, Dolly!

And look what happens when you're a virgin at 28 3/4! (Of course... I'm just joking. Being a virgin at any age should carry no stigma. People's sex lives are their own private business.)
  20. PollyDarton

Musical Mondays Week 41 Hello, Dolly!

I'm fascinated with the mid 20th century's obsession with Edwardian nostalgia. This is just one of many - (My Fair Lady, The Music Man, The Importance of Being Earnest, Charley's Aunt, Mary Poppins, Meet me in St. Louis, Lady and the Tramp... I'm sure there's more) I suppose it is the WWI folks who were waxing for their childhood - The "Lost generation." Every decade seems to get taken with a previous decade - although those movies mentioned span more than 20 years 1890s-1912, but they all share starry eyed nostalgia for this stretch of time. I guess it's because it is the last time women wore long dresses as a social rule? Or maybe it was just the great sweet spot between devastating wars where people (erm...white people) seemingly didn't have a care. Added bit: I think that's why all the shit about Cornelius never having "touched a woman." That's remembering society with some true rose colored glasses. I'm sure people were that virginal (even at 28!?) but it's just such a gross way to wax nostalgic. The fact that there are some under the radar racey jokes is not surprising either... The Music Man, for instance, is a little naughty if you start to think about some of the things they discuss in that show/movie.
  21. If I could figure it out... I could host sometime. Not sure how you guys decide that.
  22. I'm gonna get all sunshiney - but I just love the Classic HDTGM nights. Straight up hating movies with you guys is just the best.
