Musical Mondays Week 32 Hustle & Flow

I’m pretty sure that’s Pensatucky, which is funny since she’s never on the mic in the movie.

Musical Mondays Week 32 Hustle & Flow

So I have to start out by saying I feel like everything I'm about to talk about will sound a lot like this... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzEMGfR_BtQ I had less of a hard time with the pimping and more with the general misogyny and the liberal use of the word "bitch." I don't remember feeling as much that way when I first saw it, but we live in a different world now I think? I guess it's realistic. That being said... DJ is not a great guy and definitely a product of his time (ugh.) He is a deep thinker though and I guess that's why we like him. I think they all live with him because that's their setup for the Pimp/Ho operation. He offers them protection and a place to live. He pimps them, they make money, and then they all live off that money. He sells drugs too... specifically weed, right? I can't remember if there was anything else. Anyways - they are practically living in poverty. Sug is out of commission since she's pregnant, and she's his "bottom bitch." (which means his best prostitute) Lexus dances, but I feel pretty confident she's doing some street work too... even though we don't see it, and of course Nola is a total hustler. I think Lexus being kicked out just shows how down and out they were... none of them really respect him anymore and she was the most firey. Nola says things about not respecting him, too... but she just approaches him differently. They are in a shitty situation - no money, no prospects... nothing even to look forward to except what new hip hop is on the radio. I was moved by this movie this time around by its portrayal of the pure act of creation. From the ground up, we see the lifestyle lead to the inspiration which leads to creation of something that is actually very beautiful in its own way.

Episode 182 - Rock Star: LIVE!

I'm a huge Third Eye Blind fan, in fact I saw them in concert only a few months ago. "Semi-Charmed Life" aside, their first album is really great and people probably know more songs off of it than they think. It took me until my 2nd viewing of this movie to realize it was Stephan Jenkins. He looks so tall compared to Marky Mark! Anyhow, here's the first track off that album. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zP72VIL2IRI

I’ve always thought this should be a segment on the show- rewrite a HDTGM movie to be good. Maybe it could even be called “Let me rewrite this dumb piece of shit.” People could write theme songs and maybe it could be a June thing particularly? I dunno but they should get on it.

That's funny... I was thinking about how the best Morocco/LGBT lifestyle connection I can make is in Ab Fab when Patsy and Adina go to Morocco and we learn that Patsy got gender reassignment surgery while living there.
  7. I believe it's on Amazon Prime too... it was definitely a factor in choosing it. I wanted something easy to find.
  8. Sorry guys - it works on my screen. Not sure why. I tried a new link. Answer: Yes.
  9. Since Tomspanks took my obvious choice...
  10. I’m at work and I have to go to a meeting, but I’ll be back.

Episode 182 - Rock Star: LIVE!

I just found a clip. Her roomate's name is Marcy. During the nipple piercing scene Chris asks Emily "Where's Marcy?" and she says she is out with Rob seeing Wham! Later Emily tells Chris she is meeting Marcy in Seattle to start a new business. Marcy is never onscreen. She's a "Bob Sacamano."

Episode 182 - Rock Star: LIVE!

Y'all this movie spoke to me. I loved it. Seriously... I missed it when it came out and I would have been so into it, the fact that it's bad (and it is) wouldn't have mattered. I can't help but thinking how there is a small hidden relevance in this movie: Cosplay. Cosplay is intensely popular right now as many of you know and perhaps experience first hand. The act of crafting costumes, wigs, and makeup for these people is a true art form and some of them are seriously talented. That is exactly what Chris Cole was doing, but way before it was fashionable (outside of Trekkie conventions?) It hasn't been until the last decade that cosplay has gone mega mainstream. Accuracy is paramount, which is exactly Chris's #1 concern through the first act of this film. He's a cosplay trailblazer. Is there a "RockCon"? Too bad I don't have a magic machine that I could ask and could tell me.

Emily's roommate was going into business with her and she was dating Rob... I don't remember her name, but to be fair neither did Chris when he was all blitzed on rock star fame.
  14. I tried to get in too... to no avail. To be fair though, I never said I was going to join because I wasn't sure I would make it.

One of my favorite things about this movie is the parents... for all the reasons mentioned in the podcast, but also that their unwavering support goes against type in a movie like this. They could have EASILY made his parents disapproving of his dreams and talents and make it a framing conflict, but instead they handed that job to his brother and had them screaming and throwing devil horns at his gigs. They are his biggest fans and I love it. I am bummed that they disappear after his Steel Dragon debut. The parents really kind of break the mold for me, but otherwise this movie seemed to be hella informed (derivative) of a few other films - 1 - Boogie Nights (1997) - Mark Walberg plays a sexy kid with an unappreciated talent who meets the right people and has a rise and fall from fame. Parent Approval Scale: Joanna Gleason plays his nightmare mother. 2 - Almost Famous (2000) - An inside look into the inner workings of a rock band and their groupies and lifestyle. Parent Approval Scale: Francis McDormant plays a very unapproving mother 3 - Wayne's World (1992) - Hometown guys, obsessed with rock music, rise to fame while falling in love. Parent Approval Scale: No parents - these dudes are 40! There might be more.

I hear it's one of the most painful places to pierce, too. That's also another moment of some homophobia played for laughs. That whole scene exists so that MM and JA can exchange a look when Bobby Beers lists the nipple piercing as proof that he's gay.

Episode 182 - Rock Star: LIVE!

Yeah... I think they imply they had sex when they are riding in the golf cart a few scenes later and she says "Show them what you can do with that amazing tongue of yours" or something like that. Which brings upmore questions. Oh yeah... while she's peeing I'm pretty sure she calls him "lover," which is me being literal, but I think that's what they were implying. This was made in 2001 (pre 9/11) which is very much in keeping with the 80s/90s sensibilities - Ace Ventura, The Naked Gun, The Crying Game, Crocodile Dundee, Sleepaway camp.

Musical Mondays Week 31 Umbrellas of Cherbourg

I watched this movie guys... I really did. It was on a screen in my home at some point in the last week, that I'm sure. It was beautiful, like a sweet singing bag of candy conversation hearts, and I was wondering myself why it was on Mars at some point too until I had a flashback to french class... but otherwise I got nothing. Oh... here's one. Since I was a little distracted... all the women sounded like the same person sung all their parts. They all had a high piercing falsetto.

    Episode 181.5 - Minisode 181.5

I'm a parent of a small child and what she watches totally effects her. She's really not supposed to be consuming very much media at her age, but she loves it so we let her watch a little PBS... It's amazing to watch this little person that used to be a tiny baby sing and dance to something all because they are digging it. TBH: Most of the time when we turn it on it is to get through an hour in the evening when she is worn down and ragged. I admit this because I can totally see how people just let their kids go and gradually stop monitoring what their kids are watching... people's lives are fucking hard and they got shit to do. I hope to do better and I guess I will try to combat this by watching things with her for as long as she'll let me. This. This. This. I was lucky enough to grow up without the internet, and my teen years were in the "instant messenger" days. My early 20s were still pre Facebook/The social media revolution. I did not have to navigate through some of the hardest years under the scrutiny and pressure of social media and for that I am so thankful. But this will always be the world my daughter lives in.

The scene where Furlong goes to find Renee Russo at her old apartment, and the African American family is there... Did it remind anyone of Back to The Future II?

It would potentially change everything. If there's universal healthcare I guess.
