    Brenda Starr (1992)

Brenda Starr (1992) Dir. Robert Ellis Miller Writ. Noreen Stone & James D. Buchanan Starring: Brooke Shields Diana Scarwid Jeffrey Tambor June Gable Charles Durning Tony Peck Timothy Dalton A film based on the Brenda Starr, Reporter comic strip created in 1940. The film was actually shot and completed in 1986, but wasn't released in the United Stated until 1992 due to litigation issues over the IP. The plot from Wikipedia: "Mike is a struggling artist who draws the Brenda Starr comic strip for a newspaper. When Brenda comes to life and sees how unappreciated she is by Mike, she leaves the comic. To return her to her rightful place and keep his job, Mike draws himself into the strip. Within her fictional world, Brenda Starr is an ace reporter for the New York Flash. She is talented, fearless, and smart, and she is a very snappy dresser. The only competition she has is from Libby Lipscomb, the rival paper's top reporter. Brenda heads to the Amazon jungle to find a scientist with a secret formula, which will create cheap and powerful fuel from ordinary water. There, she must steal the formula from her competition and foreign spies." The movie got horrible reviews. I think for two main reasons: 1) Brooke Shields was a bad fit for the characters, and 2) The film was really outdated by the time it was released. I guess they wanted to get some kind of return on investment. An Amazon Second Opinion: "Five Stars: Can't go wrong with Timothy Dalton and Brooke Shields."

    Episode 191 - Rad: LIVE!

Yes yes yes thank you, my boyfriend and I were so confused by this too. I mean some wrestlers do backfilps but Hulk was such a shitty wrestler, he definitely wasn't doing them. Hell, he was basically pacing around the ring while his competitors were selling him.

    Episode 191 - Rad: LIVE!

Speaking of this guy and his henchmen - if they were wanting to secure an endorsement deal with a winner of the Hellrace, why didn't they just wait until after the race was over and then propose it to the guy who won? Why did they have find the person first and then make sure they win the race? It didn't make sense to me.

    Episode 191 - Rad: LIVE!

Sorry if someone already posted this but I wanted to share something I saw on the IMDB page, although I cannot find it anymore of course: The main theme of the film, played at the beginning and end, wasn't part of the soundtrack and because it was written solely for the film it has been "lost to the ages." As if you couldn't just rip the song from the film if you needed a copy of it.

bump, also this movie was nominated for a Golden Razzie but I don't believe it won.
  9. National Lampoon's European Vacation Dir. Amy Heckerling Wr. John Hughes Starring: Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, Dana Hill, Jason Lively I love the original National Lampoon's Vacation and the Christmas sequel (the first Xmas sequel, that is). I forgot about how horrible the European movie is. Like holy crap it's bad. How does this have a 6.2 on IMDB? The main issue I think is that it relies on a lot of creepy sexual jokes that aren't funny, just uncomfortable. For example, at the very beginning of the film the family is on a game show called "Pig In a Poke." The host of the show (played by Gomez Addams from the TV show, John Astin!) greets each member of the Griswolds Family Feud-style. But when he gets to Audrey, he gives her a very gross, long kiss on the mouth. She's a teenager, by the way. Also, towards the end of the film, Ellen Griswold is almost raped by an Italian charlatan. A running joke in the film when they are in France is that the French people they encounter speak poorly of the Griswolds, which of course the Griswolds can't understand. But some of these include comments on Ellen's chest and that Audrey has "a nice ass." Again, she's a teenager in this movie and the man saying this is like 40-something. There are other examples I could list but won't here. They also rely on fat jokes with Audrey's character. She eats when she's upset that her boyfriend wants to openly date other girls. Ha ha how funny, right. I looked up who wrote this film and was shocked to see that John Hughes did. I was certain someone else was responsible because Hughes was usually so much better than to stoop this low. But I was wrong. Not that Hughes didn't write sex jokes, but his usually weren't so, you know, *shudders*. Eric Idle appears as an English man who is hit by Clark while riding his bike. He reappears several times in the film but the running joke isn't really much of a joke at all. Kind of a wasted use of Idle's talent if you ask me. Don't worry, there is a musical montage of the family trying on new clothes in Italy. The movie was a financial success, with a budget of $17 mil and a USA gross of $49.4 mil. The good thing about this was probably that it green-lit the much funnier, much better Christmas sequel.

    Vicious Lips (1986)

Vicious Lips (1986) Director: Albert Pyun Writer: Albert Pyun Running Time: 1 hr 24 min Rating: R Starring: Dru-Anne Perry, Gina Calabrese, Linda Kerridge Yeah so this movie... it's basically like a battle of the bands-type plot except set in outer space. A band loses their lead singer so their manager finds a naive girl to take her place at the last minute, and then about 30 minutes later they get the opportunity of a lifetime to play a gig in outer space that's a big deal. Their spaceship crash-lands onto a planet of sand dunes and they scramble to figure out their next move while also making the gig on time. That synopsis makes it sound much more exciting than it actually is. The film does not take itself very seriously, so I debated on whether or not to submit this. But I also feel like it's trying too hard to be over-the-top, when actually the story is pretty boring. The hair and outfits are nuts as you can imagine. The music is pretty alright but also space-related and kind of corny. The film was only released on blu-ray within the last 10 years and since then some have called it a cult classic, but I still think it's too boring to be a good cult classic. Like, at least in The Room there's people walking in and out of the apartment for the whole running time - in this film there's gobs of women just staring off or walking around a space ship. Also - The guy who directed this also did Cyborg with Van Damme. AND a ton of action/sci-fi movies starring rappers like Snoop Dogg, Master P, Ice-T, etc. Of course Steven Seagal and Tom Sizemore were in some of his films as well. Here's some Amazon Second Opinions: Five Stars: "YOLO" - "This is true cinematic art at its finest. Required viewing for any serious student of film history. The quality of the wiggery is superb, and the vocal styling and athleticism of the pedantic manager character deserves recognition. Did I mention there are tits? At points, the mirage of a plot appears before us like an oasis in the desert of the insanity that is this movie, but is quickly revealed as an illusion - genius! Our friend Greg recommended this movie, and we should have known better. TLDR; Lunar Madness is dope af." Four Stars: "Fun!" - "Girl band crashes their ship and soon find themselves under attack. Not sure why this was unreleased here in the USA for so long. I watched this on HD and really liked it. Some parts drag especially in the middle, but most movies do."

    Episode 187 - Beautiful Creatures

I feel like they were trying to show his character attempt to connect with "the youths" by referencing Google, which any grandpa knows about.

    Episode 187 - Beautiful Creatures

This movie was bizarre to me, in that I started out absolutely hating it (especially the main character and how he talked in -isms) and by the end I think I kind of liked it? Also, I haven't listened to the episode yet but hot damn those kids in the movie had crazy chemistry and I was shocked when they didn't just starting fucking in the middle of the street at some point.

    Episode 185.5 - Minisode 185.5

Watched Geostorm last night and had some notes I wanted to share: 1) In the scene where (I don't know any of the character's names btw) the main character's brother and his hacker friend are in his maybe fiance's house and the fiance walks in to find the hacker messing around in her kitchen, you can see a book on the fiance's shelf that says "Secret Agent" 2) When the space station is in the process of self-destructing and they're covering it on the news, why is the main character's daughter sitting there watching the news with her mom? If my ex-husband and father of my daughter's death was being covered live on the news I might remove her from that situation, but that's just me. 3) So the whole space station blew up in a fantastic explosion but the escape pod remains totally unscathed?

Episode 184 - Johnny Mnemonic: LIVE!

OK so I apologize is this has already been discussed and I missed it. But it was really hard to hear what the audience member was saying that made Jessica scream bloody murder. Something about Johnny's mom? Can someone explain cause I really want to know now.

    Episode 183 - Ladybugs: LIVE!

Good point... I'm also surprised they didn't touch on the scene where Matthew reveals to the girl that he's actually a boy, where he pulls her into either a room or a closet (I can't remember) and then because of the scream you hear I'm guessing he just whips his dick out? It that not a crime maybe? I mean maybe not completely at his age but was there not a better way to revealing that?

    Episode 183 - Ladybugs: LIVE!

I need to say two things about the latest episode: 1) Jason got so close to mentioning something that bothered me but didn't quite make it there: So at the last game in the movie, where the boss refuses to let his daughter play because he thinks she sucks, if that's the case then why are the parents even at the game? To watch everyone else play but their own kid? I know it may pale in comparison to so many other nonsense issues in the movie but that drove me crazy. 2) I'm fairly certain that one of the 5-Star Second Opinions was written by a bot, because why would anyone give the movie 5 stars while also calling the plot horrible? The sentences also seemed very generic. I hope Paul wasn't tricked by a computer!

    Episode 182.5 - Minisode 182.5

Boyfriend and I watched Ladybugs this weekend and it was excruciating to sit through... I can't stand Rodney Dangerfield in movies because even though it's a film his dialogue still sounds like he's doing stand up... No one in real life talks in pauses, and then a punchline. Also, the last person on earth I want to hear sexual innuendo from is Dangerfield. I somehow managed to not gag throughout the movie.

Episode 182 - Rock Star: LIVE!

Also - Glad others are on the same page with me about the Tonya deal. I know the movie was set in the 80's but I felt like if they were trying to be truthful to the culture of the times, the writers still didn't do a very good job of presenting a trans character as a real person and not just a weird prop for offensive humor.

    Episode 181.5 - Minisode 181.5

But does the movie try to suggest she's got a penis because she pees standing up? I was so confused by that

    Episode 181.5 - Minisode 181.5

OK I want to talk about this movie because my boyfriend and I watched it last night and we laid in bed for about 90 minutes just discussing everything we had encountered with this movie and I think we ended up with more questions than answers: 1) This part left me screaming - the end of the movie where Chris or whatever Mark's character's name is singing at a club or coffeehouse and Emily comes in and he sees her so he then tells his band mate that he's going to go talk to her and then WALKS OFF THE STAGE DURING THE SONG and no one seems to even notice! I can't deal with it. 2) There seemed to be a lot of homophobia in this movie - the other "f word" was used a couple times, Chris's brother questions his sexuality in front of his parents, the band fires their lead singer and swears it's not because of his sexuality but then proceeds to taunt him about being gay ("I don't care if you're gay, just keep your cock away from me"), and then at the very end during the credits I feel like they try to insinuate that the lead singer started doing Riverdance because he's gay... This is 2001, mind you. 3) On a related note, let's talk about the woman who's name I do not know but she has a black, bobbed haircut and she picks up Chris and Emily at the airport... at the end of that orgy scene are they insinuating that she has a penis because she's peeing standing up? If so, are they trying to make a joke that haha, Chris maybe slept with a trangendered woman and didn't know? Also, who is this person and what role does she play with the band? Cause she's too involved to be a groupie but not involved enough to be a manager or a musician. I don't get it at all. 4) When Emily meets Chris in Seattle did they meet in Emily's home or a hotel? Because the dialogue left me confused about this. Also, Chris didn't seem high or drunk but just very very sleepy and instead of storming off I probably would have just asked him if he needed sleep or some kind of medical attention instead of breaking up. 5) Do we ever find out what business Emily has? I don't think it's ever mentioned and the one shot from inside her place of business left me confused on what it was.
