Episode 244 - My Demon Lover

Depending on your tolerance level for weird demon effects, it’s totally worth watching and is only $2.00 to rent on Amazon.
  2. There are a number of HDTGM movies on this list. To me, the only movies that are truly bad are ones that are hateful//hurtful/offensive towards a group of people, or boring.

    Ricochet (1991)

I haven’t watched it in quite some time, but I’ll always remember the line where John Lithgow tells a prison guard (While Lithgow is in prison, plotting his revenge, I think) that he’s going to floss with the guards’ wife’s pubes. Classy stuff!

Episode 244 - My Demon Lover

That was legitimately my favorite scene in the movie. I rewound it to hear him describe the shows again! oliver Twist.

That’s quite the backstory! Careful, you’re dangerously close to making the plot coherent!

Episode 244 - My Demon Lover

I dunno, this IS an 80s movie. He could have become a wolf of Wall Street and fit right in!

That’s what he claims. We’ll see....(in our imaginations, at least)

Given her supposed track record and his history, how long do you give their relationship? I say 72 hours.

Episode 244 - My Demon Lover

Genuine question: do y’all think Robert Englund would have been a compelling alternate casting choice for Kaz?

    Ricochet (1991)

Another great Lithgow performance is his season on Dexter. I think it’s season 4? Maybe season 5. It’s the best season of the series, right before it starts to turn to shit.

Yeah! Way to call out Cam Bert’s priveledge! But is his ivory tower located in a castle in Central Park? Inquiring minds want to know!

    The Cannonball Run (1981)

He also directed the HDTGM classic Rad!

Episode 244 - My Demon Lover

Sorry Paul, this is not Beauty and the Beast. This is an attempt to make a rom-com with Freddy Krueger in the lead (yes, the lead is a demon, but what would you classify Freddy as?). Evidence of this: The film was produced by New Line Cinema, the company that was made from the success of the Nightmare on Elm Street films. The demons in this film—particularly Kaz, when he is shape-shifting into the mom and so forth—have incarnations that feel mind-fucky in a Freddy Krueger-ish way. Kaz occasionally makes wisecracks in a similar style to Freddy. Women are slashed—or mangled—in a less graphic version of how Freddy mutilates teens. In regards to the dorky character who is the actual mangler—he has to know he’s a demon. I agree his behavior is weird whichever way you slice it, but while he’s abducting Denny he keeps saying ominous shit—like constantly singing “old time religion”—that doesn’t make sense if he DOESNT know he’s a demon. Plus, in the climax, he blows freezing breath and explodes out of his skin in a way that seems like he KNEW the demon was always hiding under there. I think the mistake you guys are making in your analysis is that you’re looking for logic where there is none. I loved it, but this horror/rom-com hybrid could only have been made while people were doing rails of cocaine off of every conceivable surface. It is a series of “and then THIS happened!”-style non sequitors instead of a coherent plot. These weird, abrupt left turns occurred even in the dialog, like when Sonia suddenly starts talking about having to return her boyfriend’s umbrella. I enjoyed it, I’m glad the filmmakers were coked up enough to make it!

    Episode 243.5 - Prequel to Episode 244

Yeah, I thought Castle Rock was great (11/22/63 was a bit of a mixed bag for me. It didn’t totally come together for me, but it was interesting. Glad you liked it!). The Locke & Key pilot came about after both of those shows (or perhaps around the same time as Castle Rock). After Hulu pulled the plug, Netflix snatched it up pretty quickly and put it into production. If things had gone to plan with Hulu, it would have come out a year or so before Netflix did.

Joe Hill is actually one of my favorite authors, period. Although I grew up on—and still love—Stephen King, Joe Hill has managed to put his own stamp on the horror/dark fantasy genre. His latest collection of short stories—Full Throttle—is great, NOS482 is great (and has another TV show that’s a mixed bag) and his short story “Pop Art” is one of my favorites of all time (and it’s not a horror story). Honestly, his only book that I had mixed feelings about was Strange Weather, but that still had some good stuff in it. As for Locke & Key, it’s a show that’s had a very troubled production history. Its most recent previous incarnation—which Joe Hill was also hands-on with—was co-created with Scott Derrickson (Sinister, Dr. Strange). They made a pilot for Hulu, Hulu changed management and didn’t pick it up. It was supposed to be good and had an awesome cast. Who knows what it would have been like, but since both creators have horror backgrounds, I like to think it would have been truer to the tone of the the graphic novels. The Netflix version was produced by Carlton Cuse (Lost and the Adventures of Brisco County Jr—where Bruce Campbell played a cowboy—are his most interesting.....Bates Hotel and his involvement in Rampage and San Andreas are less so).

Adding to the comics reccomendations a little late, but I liked Joe Hill’s Locke & Key graphic novels MUCH more than their WB-ish Netflix adaptation. If you’ve seen the show but not read the books, check them out! Just keep in mind that they’re not suitable for kids (my cousin has a 12-year old who loves the show and I had to warn him about the books).

Big Trouble in Little China (1986)

They won’t do it. It legitimately has earned cult status as a thoroughly fun b-movie (and as much as I enjoy most of the F& F franchise, this is on a whole other level). Even when it was released it was thought of as being far better than should have been expected. I genuinely don’t think Paul or Jason would be inspired to rip on it. HOWEVER, if you were to make this pitch to Unspooled, it’s a similarly fun retro choice like their discussions of Clue, House Party, etc. that they’ve done on YouTube. And sadly, with the probability of COVID lasting for several more months (at least), that’s the closest thing to a live audience that we’re going to get.

Are they available for free? I think Paul was concerned about Human Giant being lost to time, Jason was concerned that not many people would see those shows because they’re ONLY on the CC app, presumably for paying customers.. And Jason didn’t think the app was popular.
  19. I’ve finally started watching Infinity War—since I have Disney now and it’s summer, so why not—but am watching it in 40-50 minute chunks. I think quarantine has given me ADHD (or amplified the symptoms since I haven’t been officially diagnosed).

Episode 243 - The Peanut Butter Solution

Ugh. I haven’t heard this, but it sounds terribly reminiscent of Duran Duran’s cover of “911 Is a Joke” (also by Public Enemy) on their horrible tribute album Thank You, dedicated to musicians they admire (even in 1994, I knew it did not look good for a rich white British rock band to cover this song). YIKES.
  21. This is also available on hoopla—the public library streaming app—for free, if you have it.

    Star Wars Podcast

Paul has also mentioned Wondery’s “Inside” series (I believe on Unspooled). They’ve done inside Psycho, Inside Jaws and recently Inside Star Wars—all about the making of each film. They’re really good.

Musical Mondays Week 95 The Wiz

I think I might try to watch it in 1/2 hour chunks. I’ll freely admit that musicals where people sing non-stop (or rap, in this case) are not my jam. I’ve seen Tommy and Rent and CATS—among others—and I wasn’t a fan. i know Hamilton is universally beloved, I Know it great reviews, I was somewhat excited to see it. I sat down with my parents to watch it, made it to the 45 minute mark (the wedding scene) and realized I couldn’t handle two more hours of it. For this reason, I’m glad I didn’t see it as a full production (not that we could have gotten tickets anyway). I just need SOME dialogue to break things up. Also, I’m not that well-read about Hamilton, so just trying to take everything in was overwhelming. I liked In the Heights better. Glad you enjoyed it!

Episode 243 - The Peanut Butter Solution

I’ll go on record as perhaps being one of the few people from the USA who saw this in elementary school (or perhaps sixth grade). From what I vaguely remember, we thought it was weird but funny. Then again, our teachers often showed us random, weird shit. we also watched Troll. i thought all the kids in this were great and everyone gave solid performances. I actually generally enjoyed it until the slave-labor part, which—as weird as the first two-thirds of the movie were—seemed to come from a COMPLETELY different movie. The most disturbing part of the movie that no one has talked about: Michael’s nightmare where the dog attacked his long hair. Also, I saw the female “wino” (whose name was Mary, I think, but I’ve already forgotten) as being mean and only begrudgingly helping Michael. My interpretation of the “fright” was that she was the one who scared him and made his hair fall off, because she tries to do it again at the end and he brushes her off. It’s not clearly explained, but that’s my take on it.
