Guests I'd Love To Hear of HDTGM

Chris Jericho and Colt Cabana would be perfect for this podcast. They have such high energy, are so upbeat (ESPECIALLY for professional wrestlers, who sometimes have pretty depressing backstories and a laundry list of injuries). Mick Foley would also be excellent. Lake Bell would be great too. I mean, she made an outstanding movie-about-moviemaking, itself a huge challenge. Plus she's funny and charming. Speaking of which, have you seen 'In a World...'? If not, please do so now. Neko Case is more charming than Frank Underwood, plus way funnier and seems like a nice person. Bonus: she creates gorgeous music. Any podcast appearance she makes is gold. The MST3K/Rifftrax crew: Yes please. Always and forever, yes.
  2. How about we cross universes like this: Matthew McConaughey stars in a new HBO spinoff series called 'True Blood Detective' where he plays a crime-solving witch named "Magic Mike."

    McConaughey

Also, did anyone else think his scene was the best part of Wolf of Wall Street? I would have been ok with a Best Supporting Actor nomination for those five minutes.

    McConaughey

To be honest, I've been an unabashed fan of McConaughey for a long time and have thought he's been underrated as an actor ever since we kind of forgot he had this period in his career in which he was in in movies like Amistad, Lone Star, and A Time to Kill. He did have to go through a wasteland of Failure to Launch and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, but he came out the other side to give us Lincoln Lawyer, Mud, Dallas Buyers Club, and True Detective. Plus, his abs are great!

    RoboCop 3 (1993)

I abandoned the IMDB boards when I encountered a thread concerning 'Live Free or Die Hard' in which an argument ensued as to Maggie Q's racial purity (i.e. is she a "real" Asian?). No thank you forever.

    Waterworld (1995)

Now THIS is a movie I want to see. Anybody have $5 million they want to invest in a Roger Corman production?

Episode 79 — MAD AS HELL

This is why I love the Fogelnest Files. Jake finds ways to make listening to discussions of classic films like 'Network' just as fascinating as discussions on public access TV insanity.

    RoboCop 3 (1993)

Oh, I definitely agree that the original outdoes the remake both in its reach and what it accomplishes, and I also agree that the RoboCop/Murphy journey is, as you say, "masterfully executed" in Verhoeven's film. I just think this is done through the other characters because RoboCop is always responding to inputs from the outside. I mean, even in his creation, his first images are of those scientists dressing him up at a party or Miguel Ferrer/Bob Morton ordering Murphy's last vestiges of physical humanity to be done away with. "Lose the arm." Oy, what a great character, delivery, and overall performance that was. Even RoboCop's dedication to his primary directives drives his behavior to a great extent (including the "hidden" directive implanted by his creators). But I think this is why we cheer for Murphy at the end; that he managed to excise the influences of outside actors and become his own character. Anyway, right now I'm arguing that the original is great, which is pretty much a given already... so I guess thanks Internet? I just had a ton of fun with the remake, found myself engaged with the action, and didn't find anyone particularly miscast. However, your criticisms are well-taken. The movie could have been more violent and not PG-13, and I think if a more dilapidated Detroit mirrored the destruction of the Middle East seen in the opening sequence, it would have been a more effective film, both in setting and social commentary. In the original, it was clear why an argument for a RoboCop was a valid one because even the Detroit precinct was a shithole. In the remake, it's so clean it looks like there's still a budget for maid service.

    Episode 83 — Winter's Tale

I've seen that phenomenon a couple times, actually. There was one instance where I was seeing some pure trash action film (probably Olympus Has White House Down or whatever) and a group of severely handicapped adults, accompanied by a chaperone, were in the theater as well. They were handicapped enough to be obviously disturbed by the images, violence, and noise on screen, to the point where they were constantly vocalizing their distress, only to be yelled at by their own chaperone. It was clear they did not want to be their and it was pretty disheartening to see. People are scum, I guess.

    RoboCop 3 (1993)

Because I know everybody cares so much about my totally great opinions, here are my thoughts on the remake from another forum I post on. I'm putting this here because, if you are aching for some robots-shooting-bad-guys-action enough to be tempted to watch Robocop 3, I think you should go see the remake instead... "Fuck all y'all naysayers, this is just a kick ass action movie. Sure, it is a vastly different beast than the original, but in that film, the titular Robocop (and the outlandish violence) was a vehicle for Verhoeven's satire. Alex Murphy wasn't really a character, but a focal point for the events and other characters to act around. In this version, Murphy is clearly the focus of the plot and the commentary stems from him rather than around him. The subjects of media hype, security versus freedom, and the use of automated drones have made Robocop, in my opinion, ripe for remaking or rebooting for several years now. Yes, the original is still outstanding and is not surpassed by the remake, but that does not mean this movie sucks. It's an action film that manages to have something to say while being, above all else, a shitload of fun. The cast is splendid, the effects are good, and the violence is well-choreographed. I guess you can complain that the frequent use of non-lethal bullets and exploding drones in lieu of bullet-ridden gangsters was an unnecessary acquiescence to get a PG-13... but I kinda feel that, if somebody really did build a policing robot, it probably would have a shitload of non-lethal weaponry at its disposal. It would be bad publicity for a robodrone to be piling up corpses of Occupy Wall Street hippies or something if it didn't have to. Speaking of bad publicity, the amount of crap this movie has gone through to get made (difficulty casting, studio interference, script revisions, etc.) makes how good this actually is kind of remarkable. So kudos for that. I also appreciate how a scumbag media entity is named "Novak." Nice touch. Joel Kinnaman is great as Robocop and as Murphy, but having Michael K. Williams in this makes me want to have HIM star in his own bad ass motherf*cker action role. I'm not saying make him Robocop, but something. It's fucking Omar, yo. Give him some guns and some bad guys to kill! "

    Episode 83 — Winter's Tale

My constructive input on this intelligent Internet conversation... Magical realism is like that old saying about pornography: I can't tell you what it is, but I know it when I see it. Also, it gives me boners when done well.

    Episode 82.5 — Minisode 82.5

Ha! I'm glad my profanity-laced rant got you to read the book. I think your description is pretty accurate, actually. It gets to my whole fascination with all this myth-making wackiness that the book is steeped in. Also: I gave in and saw this fucking movie. I don't even know why they bother adapting books like this. It was published over 30 years ago and any film version would necessitate spending tens of millions of dollars. It also doesn't have a rabid fanbase eager to see it on screen like Twilight or Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings. So who is this for? Literature nerds who want to see an unfilmmable novel on screen? So many compromises and changes are made to the book, they might as well have not even bothered buying the rights and making some other wacky time travel Romance movie set in New York (remember Kate and Leopold starring Hugh Jackman?). Still, it's much less infuriating than another unfilmmable novel-turned-movie I saw in theaters: Cloud Atlas. FUCK THAT MOVIE. It was so self-serious and burdened by its own sense of satisfaction I found it pretty unwatchable... but it really accomplished very little. It was like seeing a guy at a gym in an Affliction T-shirt hi-five his dudebros for bench pressing 65 pounds. Winter's Tale at least makes no pretense of intellectualism. The most irritating thing about it is the infusion of so much outright Christian allegory, which is not present in the novel (at least in the overly obvious expository speeches by these "demons" and Lucifer or whatever). Finally: what is harder to believed in, flying angel horses from the stars, or run-of-the-mill romantic comedies in which Kevin James gets the girl?

Is that a good thing or a bad thing? If you had pitched that as a book description to me, and I had no prior knowledge to what the book was, it would be something I'd be interested in reading.

I saw Mick Foley post this on his Twitter feet. I love this commercial, but have no idea what the sales pitch was like. "Oh, you know what makes ME hungry? An overweight insane man with an unwashed sock puppet!" http://vimeo.com/74583481

    Episode 82.5 — Minisode 82.5

As a fan of the novel, watching the trailer feels like being told a Game of Thrones movie is coming out, then watching a preview of 'Dungeon Siege' instead of the HBO show. This might be one rare case in which the film adaptation actually hurts the book. The elements of magical realism just sort of make sense in the novel. Well, of course there is a flying horse and a mile long ship and a winter that lasts for generations. Just from the trailer, these elements come off as plain silly. I can't tell if it will be cathartic to hear our intrepid podcasters mock this movie or just painful to watch. "Read a fucking book, you guys!" This Dumb Dumb Literary and Film Nerd

Episode 272 — Sex Party Season

If I may borrow language that might be used on Nerd Poker, I feel like Gillian Jacobs is a magical comedy amulet; funny things just occur when she is around. Even if she makes zero jokes in an entire episode, her presence and talent elevate the hilarity of those around her an funny jokes happen. If she does make her own punchlines, then all the better.

    Starship Troopers 3: Marauder

Witness: The return of Casper Van Dien to the Starship Troopers franchise! Also, I'm pretty sure a Starship Troopers-inspired musical in the style of Paul Verhoeven's film would more sense than the actual original movie.
