I agree on silent fantasy and horror, they have such a drealike quality.

    Jack Reacher (2012)

The sequel is out today with fairly lukewarm reviews. I wonder if it will flop. From what I remember of the original Jack Reacher, they built up Reacher to be the most elite of the elite badass, but it felt like all hot air. I don't know why I had such a hard time buying it, he plays that type of character often enough that he of all people should be able to pull it off. Also, Herzog felt like a Bond villain and it seemed really out of place.

    Left Behind (2014)

Wow, I just discovered that rather than do a sequel to the Nic Cage Left Behind, they did a Young Adult reboot called "Vanished: Left Behind - Next Generation" that I will probably end up watching.

    Left Behind (2014)

Watching the Nic Cage version right now. Here are my thoughts. Wow, the moral archetyping makes Tyler Perry look subtle. Given that this is the 2nd version of the film and the furthest away from Kirk Cameron, I guess that means the source material is also this way. Shocker. Again this whole rapture strikes me as a terrible idea. Your bus driver gets raptured and the bus crashes as a result everyone on board dies immediately and goes to hell? Tough luck. Dayum God, at least wait until self driving cars and passenger planes are a thing before starting this rapture. There is a Muslim man on board this flight who tries to help out a little person, thus showing that he is a decent person. Guess whether or not he gets raptured. There's also a shot of an empty car with a Jesus fish hanging from the rear view mirror. That's subtle right? Apparently the tell of whether or not you're a believer is if you have some Christian paraphernalia on you. What if you're just holding a friend's cross? Do you get lucky and they get left behind? I do sort of wish this hadn't flopped so hard and parts 2 & 3 were green-lit. I remember there being more to the 1st movie than this plane plot and other immediate post-rapture melodrama. They don't even set up the antichrist. Apparently the only people that enjoyed this version were fans of the original LB and bad Nic Cage movies, we're talking Outcast level bad. The best rapture movie by far is still And as a bonus, some facts about this movie from IMDB: Nicolas Cage was reportedly paid $3 million to star and he completed his work in just 10 days. Left Behind authors Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins along with their families were given an advanced screening of a rough cut of the movie on January 31, 2014. Afterwards, LaHaye was quoted as saying, "It is the best movie I have ever seen on the rapture." Jenkins was quoted, "I believe it does justice to the novel and will renew interest in the entire series."

    Episode 146 - Dreamcatcher

My interpretation of it was that it was kind of a "time rewind." Actually, that sounds like it would come in really handy for finding lost car keys.

    Episode 146 - Dreamcatcher

This goes beyond just King, but most of the time you can usually tell who is going to die. It's usually an important character with enough at stake to tug on the heart strings (ie they have a young child) but not wreck the whole story line (ie the main character), with some comforting the audience at the end to say something like "don't worry though, this person's child will be well taken care of." It's that safe American style of having some stakes. Also to your point King often throws the mentally handicapped person (or magical African American in many cases) under the bus. It seems to have the effect of saying "this person is innocent so you should be sad, but at the same time their value is less because of their handicap."

I disagree. My problem is that they behave like novices with the powers. If I suddenly developed the power to read minds today I would probably say things like "what did you say?" quite a bit to random people or my patients or strange women that lost their keys. However if I had developed that power 25 years ago I would think that I would have at minimum developed the awareness that I was receiving thoughts from people around me and not say "what did you say" or blurt out otherwise commonly withheld information. Hell, there are fake mind readers in the real world that do a better job with their "powers" than these real mind readers in this fake world.

I have a question for the Maine people: What is the difference between a fuckerow and a fuckeree? It doesn't seem like it's grammatical gender, nor like a superior/subordinate relationship so what is it?

    Episode 146 - Dreamcatcher

My theory is that the blonde witch was echoing the opinions of of Renny Harlin who thinks that Dreamcatcher is an amazing movie or book.

    Episode 146 - Dreamcatcher

If I may play "utilitarian" for a minute (and this logic only applies to these butt aliens), this movie also tries to make Morgan Freeman out to be a bad guy by wanting to kill potentially innocent/potentially infected people. At the same time they make Thomas Jane out to be a hero for having sympathy for them and wanting to set them free. However this movie establishes that: 1) The aliens are stone cold killers with no hesitation taking human life 2) Dudditz informs us that "One worm kills the world" 3) The aliens will try to manipulate our sympathies to get what they want Morgan Freeman has been preventing an invasion for 25 years and in that time not a single infected person, animal nor worm has gotten anywhere near a major water source! Maybe there is a better way to handle it so that the innocent uninfected people don't have to die and infected people don't roam in the general populace, but I would side with Freeman over Jane on this issue. Thomas Jane is taking a huge risk in letting them out. There's also a bit of a connection to another HDTGM film: The Covenant. During an English class scene in The Covenant the teacher brings up Stephen King and the blonde witch yells out "Dreamcatcher is the shit!"

The five of them combined prevent the alien invasion so they are clearly the dream catcher.

    Episode 146 - Dreamcatcher

These guys make terrible use of their powers. From the best that I can tell, three of them get the ability to read minds and one gets some sort of supernatural finger swirl locator power. However, with these powers one becomes a lousy therapist, one a teacher and one a used car salesman. At minimum Jane should be a damn good therapist getting at the heart of people's problems and Olyphant would make a great detective. Instead Jane is forgetting that he's reading his clients minds and Olyphant is using his powers to creep out women, trying to leverage dates by finding missing car keys?

You would think that he was just some guy doing a bad English accent and not from London. Why does the alien have a bad fake English accent anyway?

Dreamcatcher related question for y'all: Does anyone know any guys in their (presumably) 30s that still call each other by their childhood nicknames on a regular basis?

I just finished watching Dreamcatcher again. The only interpretation of this movie that makes any sense is the Jacob's Ladder interpretation.

    Futureworld (1976)

I am always sort of amused and annoyed at Hollywood's portrayals of sentient (read: emotional) machines. They seem to think that something like a single small change to code will unlock all of the complexity that are human emotions. That was one of the things that made the original Westworld work, that the safeguards were malfunctioning and they were just obeying their programming. (I have yet to see the HBO show though)

Yeah, I've never been a fan of the whole "current shocking hot topic" costume thing. It always feels like a joke from a Seltzer-Friedberg movie.
