    Episode 84: RE-ANIMATOR

One of many episodes where I'm agreeing with Devin, but voting with Amy. This is a no. It doesn't pass muster, but it's super fun and I probably would have never got around to seeing it if it weren't for this podcast, so thanks Devin!

    Episode 83: KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE

I think it is. I wouldn't vote Casino into the Canon nor am I voting for Kiki's Delivery Service. I'm fine with a big Canon, but I think we need to be a little more ruthless with our no votes. I think Kiki is decent, but not great or important enough to pass muster. It's a No for me.

    Episode 82: THEY LIVE

Same with me. This movie has never been a pop-cultural touchstone in my life. To be fair, I'm young (early twenties), but I think Devin may have exaggerated the extent to which this movie has permeated the cultural consciousness. All I knew about it going in was that he came to kick ass and chew bubblegum...

    Episode 81: ED WOOD

HELL YES! This is by far my favourite Tim Burton film (although probably not the best representation of Burtonness). I also like the idea of putting this in the canon and not Plan 9. Ed Wood a great tribute to terrible cinema, so we don't have to put any actual terrible cinema in the canon.

Episode 80: GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES v SOME LIKE IT HOT

Gentleman Prefer Blondes is a lot of fun. If it was nominated in a solo episode, I would probably vote yes. But, Some like it Hot has to be in the canon. I mean, it gets in for the last line alone.

PROPOSAL: All "versus" episodes have a "neither" option

I personally like the idea that versus episodes can be a sophie's choice either way. Whether you love both films or hate both of them, you have to vote one in and one out. If we're adding a "neither" option we might as well add a "both" option and then we might as well get rid of versus all together.
  7. The U.S., Eh? Spelled "E-H." Get it? It's a play on words. Cause you Canadians are saying "eh" all the damn time.

    Suggestion: A Hard Day's Night

How about Yellow Submarine vs. A Hard Day's Night? I think would be a really interesting discussion. The downside would be a guarantied Beetles film in the canon, which i doubt everyone would be thrilled about. I'd definitely vote yes for A Hard Day's Night though.

    Episode 11 - Jersey Boy

Am I the only one who's been aware of the term "dd" for designated driver since childhood? Is it a regional thing? Because I've always know it and I've never been near a frat.

    Episode 77: SEVEN

For the 2nd week in a row, I'm siding with Amy while simultaneously disagreeing with ALL her arguments. I think Se7en is a really good film, but it's not one of the best. I think Fincher is a really great filmmaker, but not one of the best. I don't think we need multiple Fincher films in the canon and, love it or hate it, the Fincher film that clearly belongs in the canon is Fight Club.

    Episode 76: MARATHON MAN

I disagreed with most of Amy's criticisms, but I still voted no. It's a really good film and i'm thankful that this podcast gave me an excuse to watch it, but it just didn't cut the mustard as far as the canon goes. I don't think every movie in the canon needs to be a flawless all-time great, but i think it should have something significant to set it apart and i just don't think Marathon Man has enough to do so. (p.s. i'd never encountered the "is it safe" line in my life before watching this film last week)

    Episode 75: BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN

Not only am I voting for Brokeback Mountain, but I'm preemptively voting against Crash. If there's any justice in this world, the brilliant Brokeback Mountain will live on forever in a Crash-free canon.

    Episode 74: PATHER PANCHALI

I vote yes. It's cinematic impact (especially on Indian cinema) is enough to get it into the canon. I watched it for the first time this week and was really taken with the amazing filmmaking. I wasn't aware that this film was part of the Apu trilogy and i was surprised because I really felt like Durga was the protagonist through most of the movie. She was by far my favourite character. I also loved the mother character. One of my favourite moments is after Durga's death when the mother is sitting staring into space and a little girl with a gift of food approaches her and refers to her as "auntie." I feel like it shows how she's become the same kind of moocher she hated Auntie for being. Really great film.

    Episode 73: THE LOST WEEKEND

Soft yes for historical importance. It's a good movie, but it didn't blow me away. I doubt it's one that i'll revisit.

Episode 72: THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD

I watched this film for the first time yesterday and didn't realize that it was from 1938 until listening to the episode. It just feels so modern. You can really see how much subsequent action films owe to it. HUGE yes!

    Ask Paul!

Hi Paul, LOVED today's episode. Seeing as you've had both Mary Holland and Lauren Lapkus on the show, I was wondering if there's a chance of a future episode with all the members of Wild Horses?

    Episode 70: BATMAN v SUPERMAN

Honestly, before I watched these films in preparation for this episode, I assumed I was going to vote for Batman because I've never been a big fan of the Superman character. However, after watching both films, I found Superman: The Movie to be much more enjoyable. Batman may have had it's impact, but Superman: The Movie is not only the definitive Superman film, but in a lot of ways it's the definitive superhero film. Whereas Batman is neither the definitive Batman film, the definitive Tim Burton film, the definitive Joker performance, or even the definitive Batman performance in my opinion (most those honours going to The Dark Knight). Michael Keaton is the best Bruce Wayne, but that's not nearly enough to put Batman over the far superior (save the ending) Superman: The Movie

    Episode 69 - The Christs

I'm not sure that I would really have considered either of these movies for the canon on their own. Sure, they both have interesting historical impact on audiences, but I don't think of Temptation as one of Scorsese's best and I think Passion is straight up bad. However, listening to this episode made me reflect on Temptation and what it had to say about Christ and his sacrifice. Temptation shines a new light on the Christ myth and approaches it from an angle hadn't been examined before. Passion is just a gory retelling of the story that everyone knows without bringing anything new to the table.
