  1. I watched Some Like It Hot without knowing about any behind-the-scenes drama and I was taken aback by how great Marilyn's performance was. Not "coaxed into competence by a brilliant man-director and clever editing" great, not "playing a silly caricature like in All About Eve", but instead fully-realized humanity on display. And, for the first time, I understand the Marilyn Monroe mythos/fell in love with her a little. In comparison, Jack Lemmon is not nearly as sympathetic as he is in The Apartment (which I adore) and Tony Curtis is a straight-up dick (ahem, "cad") through most of the film.

I was also surprised by how modern the movie feels. There were a handful of jokes that would have an edge to them even in 2019, so it was pretty astonishing to see them in a 1959 comedy.

Twiddling my own personal bass fiddle, it was nice to finally learn the origins of the sample from this Lovage track:

  2. Amy & Paul get cookin’ with 1959’s Billy Wilder gender-bending comedy Some Like It Hot! They learn why the film’s final line was controversial, ask if films about cross-dressing still need to be made, and dive into Marilyn Monroe’s troubled history with Hollywood. Plus: Mira Sorvino discusses getting into Marilyn’s head to star in “Norma Jean & Marilyn.”

I really hope this is site wide and a bunch of people never see this thread. They'll always wonder "why is hedgehog a reaction?"

They should be available everywhere. I'm honestly torn between wanting to use the hedgehog for its intended purpose and ONLY using hedgehogs from now on.

I don’t feel like any of my options to recognize what you’re saying (i.e smiley faced “likes”) are really appropriate, but I just wanted you all to know that hear all of you.

After considering many options for a symbol of "friendly encouragement about thorny issues", I've added a new reaction type that I hope everyone will find suitable.

  5. While I have my own relatively mundane story about the choir director at my church (who later served a lengthy jail sentence for plying other teenage boys with alcohol and smut), I was thankfully old enough and cynical enough to see the writing on the wall and extricate myself from that nightmare-in-the-making. But I wanted to take a moment to say I'm glad all of you are here and able to turn this terrible movie into a net positive. ❀

And, if we're talking Spike Jonze dance videos, to share the greatest perfume ad of all time:

    Hey Guys,

I know this is really late in the game but I wanted to prep and watch the movie saw this thread, checked out the link and password but it’s not working for me. It keeps asking me for the password. I understand its supposed to be “Bonkers” but it’s not working. Any other ways to see the movie in Canada ?

Make sure you enter the password in all lowercase.

  7. FWIW, here's what Engineer Brett posted on the Earwolf subreddit:

I know the news is a bummer for some of you. It basically came down to Stitcher Premium or the end of Who Charted. This allows Howard and I to carry on the show, and gives him the freedom to create more great stuff in the future. Ideas are brewing!

The chartists mean the world to us, some of you have been supporting us for nearly a decade at this point. For those already subscribed to Stitcher Premium, this won’t feel like much of a change. For the rest, I hope you consider getting the free trial, I think you’ll find that SP has thousands of hours of Earwolf gold that makes it extremely worth it. Thank you for sticking with us!

if I'm subscribing for a year at a time, I'd like to have some assurance that the shows I listen to will actually still be around.  After ~2 years of subscribing, I've listened to everything in the back catalog that I want to listen to, and at that point, I think it's really debatable as to whether it's good value for money.ï»ż

That's fair. One benefit of both Stitcher and Patreon is that the monthly fee grants you access to the entire back catalog, so someone could theoretically move the same $5 charge to a different subscription every month and binge on the new content there. That's too much administrative overhead for me, so I've deliberately adjusted my TV/movie/live event habits to afford multiple audio subscriptions instead.

Signed up to the forum after listening for 6-7 years... super bummed that Howard Kremer will not be apart of my weekly life... so disappointed the one of the OG shows is going behind the paywall completely... how long before CBB is going behind a paywall? Can ya give me like a months heads up? This fuxking sucks.... but I guess I get it.... it’s a fucking money maker nowadays.

It's a bummer, but Stitcher Premium is a way to keep shows alive when they don't publish often enough or have enough listeners to attract advertisers. The same thing happened with With Special Guest Lauren Lapkus, Raised by TV, and The Andy Daly Podcast Pilot Project. Howard was probably presented with the option of either moving to Premium or being canceled altogether, and he chose to keep making the show for fans willing to pay a small amount to subscribe.

In my opinion (as someone who does not work for Earwolf) Stitcher Premium is worth $5/month solely to not have to listen to 5+ ads on every episode of CBB and HDTGM. But you also get access to a lot of exclusive shows like the CBB live tour, Threedom, Andy Daly's new The Great American Cabinet Of Curiosities, the Hollywood Handbook Pro Version, stand-up albums, and more stuff than you could possibly listen to in one lifetime. It's a pretty great value if you can fit it into your budget.

The link doesn't seem to be working for me. Seems like a bad choice to choose a movie not easily available for the country the live show is in..

What happens when you follow the link? I'm prompted to enter the password and, when I do, the video player appears.

As far as the movie selection goes, they probably verified that it was available for free on Prime without realizing that different Amazon regions have different streaming rights, an honest mistake for which they provided a workaround.

Is there any news about a follow-up to the (hopefully) first season of this show? I've been anticipating watching the entire Halloween series for the first time along with Gourley and Rust, and if they're going to do it this year, they would need to be starting around now to have it end near Oct. 31.

I just heard Rust on the Movies that Made Me podcast, and was disappointed that there was no announcement.

Listen to Matt's recent episode of Alison Rosen is Your New Best Friend. I don't remember if an exact date was mentioned, but there's more coming.

We need more of this! One of my favorite podcasts, please revive it! 😊

Amanda and Maria just launched their new podcast network Earios, and their press release includes this tidbit:

The Complete Christmas. Amanda Lund brings 1960’s love and marriage expert Marabel May to life in the highly-produced audio fiction series, The Complete Woman. This Christmas, Marabel May is back to enforce her suffocating rules of conduct on your holiday celebration. As if you weren’t on the verge of a breakdown already.

I commented about the recap of the last episode on this episode and how Paul and Amy chose to pretend that they forums/facebookgroup/andtwitter accounts were talking about Ashley and not Amy's clearly problematic apologist review of "Gone with the Wind" that comes from her white privilege perspective and it was deleted. You know, I like this podcast, but I don't like cowardice. I guess if you just delete things and move on it's like they never happened huh? I could deal with Amy's problematic view of such a racist film, but not with the cowardice of Paul and Amy in pretending no one had a problem with it. Feel free to delete this comment to, but don't feel free to have self-respect afterward.   ï»ż

Amy and Paul have nothing to do with the moderation of this forum and they rarely pay attention to it. To the casual observer, your first few actions after creating an account were to:

    1. Attack the hosts for not "understanding" a movie
    2. Attack the hosts for not sharing your opinion of another movie
    3. Carry over conflict from an unaffiliated Facebook group
    4. Post the same comment to multiple threads to maximize said conflict
    5. Start taking swings at other forum members

I deleted your comment in this thread (while leaving it intact in the other) because it was an unnecessary derail of the ongoing discussion of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. If you wish to continue participating here, I politely ask that you lay off the invective.
