    Episode 250 β€” Podcast Silence

I like how Scott's finally accepted that the real name of the show is Comedy Bing Bong - I think it's been three epsiodes already - does that make it legal?

    Author character from old episode?

Foam corner isn't novel excerpts though, just bad jokes - you sure it was that? Sounds to me like Brett Gelman - there's a bunch of older CBB episodes where Gelman comes on and reads his horrible plays, poems and novels... pretty fucking hilarious, even if it wasn't that, you should check them out

Episode 244 β€” An Ode To New York!

In the end I agree - i posted that it was the best thing ever 12 minutes into the show, when it was mostly scott going bananas - it slowed down a bit after that - still funny, but not best ever material - but the first 12 minutes or so were gold. Adomian as Leykis has gotta be my favourite ever, along with Mike the Janitor episode

Episode 244 β€” An Ode To New York!

I'm only 15m into this episode and have no idea what anyone on this thread is talking about, (scott is still "interviewing" Samberg) but regardliss this is like two in a row, one of the best CBBs ever - Scott is outta control! He doesn't even need guests, has long as he eats his wheaties he can talk to himself for the whole show!

Episode 243 β€” Blow Me Up, Tom!

Jesus Christ - I just started listening to this (8 minutes in) and it's already maybe the funniest episode I've ever heard (and I've heard them all) except maybe the last one Leykis Adomian was on... even Bamford's cracking up is cracking me up
  6. Hey - not sure if this is an appropriate place to ask this (if not, please suggest a better place!) but can anyone recommend good comedy open mics in L.A.? I hate to say "alternative" because that doesn't mean anything anymore (if it ever did) but I mean places where a little weirdness is welcome, where the audience isn't all meatheads, or rich people who go to Barbara Streisand concenrts, and where the comedians are doing more interesting stuff than the usual girlfriend/boyfriend, penis, self-centered gender/ethnic identity/body type jokes (or at least are doing those themes in an interesting way) - i.e. a place where you'd find Comedy Bang Bang guest types. Is there an area of the city that's got more of this sort of scene than somewhere else, or do you have to travel all around the city to go to the relevant venues? I know UCB has a lot of great people doing shows there, but their open mic is only once a month, and limited spots. Basically, I'm going to L.A. for two months, and I'd like to be able to do open mics a few times a week in front of weirdness-capable audiences, and if they would be geographically close to eachother that'd be awesome, though I don't expect that's the case in the Sprawling City. I'm also going to hopefully be taking UCB course(s). Someone told me I should go live in Silver Lake because there are a couple of open mics there, you can live there without a car, and the people there are smart and open minded - but then someone else told me that it's a far away suburb and the comedy scene there isn't anything interesting... Any suggestions would be appreciated, Thanks

Good "alternative" comedy open mics in L.A.?

Hey denimgremlin and anyone else who end up coming upon this... so I've been in L.A. for a little more than two weeks now, and from what I can tell, Nerdist Open Mic is the ONLY good open mic in town! I've been really surprised. The open mic scene here is excruciatingly awful. Audiences are all comics, they're really young, tend to be not very good, and also have no taste for or awareness of "alternative" type stuff. I was speaking to some people who were waiting to go up, and even though L.A. is comedy Mecca right now and we have every genius comedian living in this city and doing shows for $5 every night, most of these people had never heard of Mara Bamford, Tig Notaro, Natasha Leggero, Jason Mantzoukas, PAul Scheer, Anthony Jeselnik... I would see the same 30 people at all of these open mics, and I'd never see any of those people at UCB shows or other cheap amazing shows. Nerdmelt had also 100% comics in the audience, and only like 15 hang around to listen to other comedians, but they tended to be older, in general they were all decent to very good, and they were aware of the alt comedy scene, and went to the Meltdown show with Kumail Nanjiani for example. Got a very good reaction there, but just made everyone confused and uncomforable at other places... It's the only place that was at all worth going to. The other places are only good if you have a style like Seinfeld, AND you want to practice getting dead silence so you can work up your balls of steel. The bad thing about nerdmelt is it's a limited space lottery, so you only have like a 1/3 chance of going up. The hosts also talk extremely loudly in an open room while people do their sets, which is incredibly obnoxious and distracting for the audience, but I couldn't hear it when I went up, because the mic is loud. Hollywood Hotel thursdays is supposed to be another good one, but I haven't been able to check that one out yet, will do so this week. UCB has an open mic, and the auience is probably ideal, but it's only once a month and you have like a 1/10 chance of getting a spot. THe comedy scene here is just amazing. For $8 I saw Kirsten Schaal ,Rhys D'Arby, Jon Daly (as Mall McCarntey who made me piss myself) and 5 other excellent comedians I'd never heard of before. Every night, killer shows with amazing talent for $5. Saw Jeselnik, Scheer, Mantzoukas, Bamford, Leggero, Doug Benson, Jack McBreyer, Seth Morris, and tons of others I hadn't heard of, often several in a show, always $5-10. Lots of shows with young unknowns, always excellent. But open mic scene is just terrible. Worse than back home, which is a shocker, cause we have a tiny scene there. Seems like the only way to play in front of an audience, or hopefully an alt friendly audience is make friends with people and eventually someone might see something you did on line, or invite you to a little weekly event, or something.

Episode 227 β€” All Farted Out

Ack! I just heard the first 30 seconds and Aukerman already ruined the episode by calling it "bonus" with only one b!!! That's my new pet peeve! My other pet peeve is when people call Aziz Ansari "Aziz" as if he's their buddy or grandmother, even though they've never met him before. New no no.

    Episode 226 β€” Β‘Aspira!

that was a GREAT episode!!!! Sanz (who I'm not familiar with) is fucking hilarious, and the format works great too - Feig is a good guest cause I know his work and am interested in what he has to say, and Scott asked him some semi serious stuff, and then Sanz walks in and it's a ridiculous fest to the finish.

Episode 222 β€” A Peanut In The Rain

Ever since I listened to this, I keep saying "tasty bits" of this and "choice morsels" of that - I'm going to lose all my friends because of this episode... and I agree "n word yes and" was excruciatingly funny

Good "alternative" comedy open mics in L.A.?

Cool, thanks, I didn't realize they had an open mic - that goes on my list - other ones I have written down as potentially interesting are Palace Restaurant in Los Feliz Westwood Berw Co Spot Cafe Silverlake Lounge UCB has one but it's once a month and only 10 spots

    JAMES ADOMIAN FOR SNL

This sounds dumb (and sad) but he's kinda too good/smart for SNL, dont you think? I feel like he'd have to dumb himself down

  20. What does G.O.A.T mean? For the trolling/criticizing issue - I also like to criticize stuff (I think it's actually useful for the performers to some extent), but official forums are usually not the place for that - Scott reads this sometimes and he gets offended cause the guests are all his friends and they all put a lot of talent and work into making this, and there's probably not a ton of money in it. I think in a forum like this some criticizing can pass if it seems like the intent isn't just negative i.e. "ew I hate this guest, so annoying" etc versus - this isn't one of X's best characters, it's not really well thought out, needs work". Imagine the performers are all people you know, how would you talk about them?
  21. I think some people don't feel the need to speak out unless they're upset about stuff. And people don't realize that they're pooping on peoples' parade - they're used to getting free entertainment, so they don't really realize this show is done for free by the guests, and it's total improv, bound to be hit or miss, and the fact that it's 90% incredible kind of doesn't sink in...
  22. Bachelor boys stole the show!
  23. Listening to it now... holy bucket of fun, anniversary episodes are always da bomb! So glad to have Mike The Janitor return!! But confused as to where his british accent went... Loving the wompler/reardon dynamics This episode's not niggardly on laffs!

Episode 217 β€” The WTF Hour

Hmm, interesting - so do you think it was a serious episode because Marc Maron's IFC promoter people thought that'd be a better way to get the message out? Last time Maron was on they had a really fun shenanigan filled episode, and he seemed to be having a good time, so I don't think it's him that requested it be a serious episode. Or do you think a 2nd guest flaked out and this was Aukerman's way of making the best out of the situation?

Episode 217 β€” The WTF Hour

It was a good would you rather - but I was disappointed that Scott didn't go on about what kind of horrors would exist in a world where people thought the new star wars movies were better than the old. He mentioned they'd all be morons, but left it there - that was a comedy goldmine missed! Will check out Maron in Space...
