I was being sarcastic, which doesn't always come across in writing. I felt like Jewish people were portrayed as cultural outsiders in this episode and was trying to highlight the absurdity of that. Yo, that was casual antisemitism

Oh, and how is "White Jewish Guys, love that shit and want to feel like they belong"? not a racist comment.
Β
Β
Because white Jewish guys are supposed to hate rap music and feel left out. That's why the Beastie Boys were never able to gain a real following.

Though many will focus on the burgeoning sexuality, I think the real romantic tension of the film is between the murderer and his automobile. I'm glad that they touched on that in the podcast.

Deadly Prey (YouTube) is completely amazing. A man is kidnapped by mercenary thugs to be used as the target for a sadistic training exercise. What the kidnappers don't realize is that he is a former special forces operative, who only needs his bare hands and short-shorts to exact revenge upon them all. In a completely unexpected twist, the man running the merc squad is...HIS FORMER TRAINER AND COMMANDER! Inane catch phrases, plot twists that don't make sense, explosions that do no harm from 18 inches away, and a lush forest apparently 40 minutes from suburban L.A. make this a cinematic treat that must be experienced to be believed.Β
Thank you so much for recommending this film. I just watched it and loved it. I would never have guessed how much I would enjoy watching a mulleted never nude run around murdering people.

If you want to have an understanding of Steven Seagal's works and philosophy, I urge you to watch this video in its entirety with the sound on.

Steven Seagal's fight face looks like he is just discovering a fetish he has, but it is trying to hide his sexual excitement.

The type of stereotypes that Andrew and Patrick spoke about in this episode are something that is used to box people and negate anything that they do. If there is this stereotype that Asians are good at math then it automatically negates anything that an Asian mathematician accomplishes. Because, of course, it was easy for Dr. Nguyen to solve this difficult problem because Asians are good at math. He really didn't have to "work" at it like the [insert other race] mathematicians.
Β
It goes the same for athletics. If the stereotype is that Black folks are good at sports, then it negates anything that they accomplish in that realm. Because, of course, it was easy for them to become good at this sport. They didn't have to "work" for it like the [insert other race] athletes.
Β
But what it also does is that it creates boundaries that society tells you are not supposed to go outside of. So that Asian kid with quick hands and feet who likes boxing is not allowed to explore that. He is given math books and told to solve for "x" even though he is a dummy when it comes to math.
Β
The Black kid that is uncoordinated and clumsy is still pushed into sports despite his obvious shortcomings. And even though he is a whiz at algebra, no one is going to support him in that endeavor because he is going outside of the box.
Β
People are not walking stereotypes because stereotypes are not true. They are fantasy. And if you're going to believe in fantasy, you might as well make it more entertaining than Black people do X and Asian people do Y and White people do Z. Throw in some dragons. Add some elves and mech robots.

I totally agree- I just think that (and I think this might have been covered on this podcast at some point), while the satirical bent on that show is really enjoyable/interesting if it's accepted as such, it could also just be seen as repeating/reinforcing stereotypes, despite the intent, to people either "not getting it", or it maybe not being as effective as a satire as we might think.
Β
Guess I was pulling an Andrew Ti and trying to give this racist producer's racist body of racism a leg to stand on ("a hot asian guy's! That'll make it okay!").
Β
I think that is an interesting point on whether satire should be viewed as harmful based on its perception rather than its intention. I'm sure there are people who see Sunny as a sincere declaration of belief.
-
Much like watching any episode of 2 Broke Girls, I had to stop listening to this episode of the podcast after all of the "justifications" for racist acting, writing, marketing, etc.
Β
It's Always Sunny isn't perceived as "less racist" when they use racism in their jokes/guest characters because "it's cool"- it Is perceived as racist, And they make funnier (to me) jokes.
Β
It doesn't matter how many non-whites you have on a writing staff, or in the ensemble- if the shit is racist, it's still racist. Make better jokes/a better show (I don't know how, or what that would necessarily be), and it would go down a lot easier.
Β
I think that in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, there is an element of satire that isn't present in 2 Broke Girls. When a character is being racist in Sunny, I think the joke is the racism rather than the character's intended target.
Β
In 2 Broke Girls, when a character says, "You can't tell an asian he's made a mistake, he'll go in the back and throw himself on a sword," (
) the joke is on the Asian character and, by extension, Asians in general. I have only seen two episodes of 2 Broke Girls, but restaurant owner seems to exist solely as a place mark for Asian stereotypes.- 1

I will never understand why people want to say the n-word so badly.
-
Why would anybody want an n-word pass?
-
I'm actually cool with racism so long as it's being expressed by the wacky guy in the office.
-
I think that most people who say, "it's not racist if it's true" are probably racist because they think it's true.

Ah, that crumpled piece of paper. Forgot about that. I was too caught up in Hobbs violating laws, human rights, and physics to get what he wanted and never facing any consequences. Hobbs is kind of like the antithesis of Marion Cobretti. Cobra basically does everything by the book but is treated like some renegade psychopath. Hobbs is a renegade psychopath, but he gets results you stupid chief!
Β
It's easy to get distracted while watching this film. As much as I liked it, I completely agree that it was absurd.

Why did the guy agree to help the Rock after his vicious handshake when the Rock, as an American, has no authority in Britain?
Β
When Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was asked for authorization, I think his sidekick handed over some paperwork.
Β
Are the Rock and his sidekick the only DSS agents in the world? Why don't they ever have backup or assistance?
Β
I can't imagine Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson ever needing help from anybody other than Vin Diesel and his gang.
Β
I am getting angry and a little nauseous typing all this. I'm just incapable of enjoying these movies. I almost fell asleep twice.
Β
I think you should rewatch the film, but go in with the mindset that it takes place in a universe where everyone is awesome.

I could never understand people who call themselves equal opportunity offenders. It seems that they think that their racism towards one group is negated by racism towards a second

If there is anything I have learned in this thread is that you cannot make broad generalizations about black metal fans. They are neither racist or non-racist, they are neither Christian or non-Christian. They are too much of an individual for that.
Β
I would agree with this. I believe that people are capable of racism and tolerance independent of what kind of music he or she happens to find audibly pleasing.

Β
I'm not flipping anything around; I'm explaining the reason why you all are so butthurt by this ep. Does it suck to be generalized in a negative way, you bet! But that's been the experience of minorities in this country since it began. You all just got a little taste of it thrown your way. If you don't like it, then maybe next time a PoC shares a story of a racist experience they had, don't get all shitty towards them and try to make it seem like this "racism" stuff is all in their head. But by the responses, I doubt that any of you will do that and you will continue give fuck all about anything that happens to PoC in this country or around the world.
Β
When you say "you all," are you referring to everybody who posted on this thread? If so, are you accusing me as an individual, to have told a person belonging to a minority group that racism is only in his or her head?
Β
Just to avoid any accusations of whitesplaining, you should know that I am not white. Though I am a man so I think I am capable of mansplaining. I'm also not sure I understand what those terms mean.
EPISODE 613 - Jewish Dudes Who Love Hip-Hop
in Yo, Is This Racist?
Posted
I'm so glad Andrew took this caller. I also hate it when Jewish people enjoy and have opinions on hip hop.
