[Andro], as a root, means "male," as in androgynous (andro "male" + gyn "female" + ous "adjective") or androgen, a masculinizing hormone. Android is just that root plus the suffix -oid, for "shaped like." Interestingly, the wikipedia page for "android" also mentions "gynoid," which is really where I think the technology ought to be focusing. That same page says
