[Andro], as a root, means "male," as in androgynous (andro "male" + gyn "female" + ous "adjective") or androgen, a masculinizing hormone. Android is just that root plus the suffix -oid, for "shaped like." Interestingly, the wikipedia page for "android" also mentions "gynoid," which is really where I think the technology ought to be focusing.

The term "droid", coined by George Lucas for the original Star Wars film and now used widely within science fiction, originated as an abridgment of "android", but has been used by Lucas and others to mean any robot, including distinctly non-human form machines like R2-D2. -
So, just because Hardwick likes to mention he took Latin in highschool, the "m" in mandroid is kinda' gilding the lily, since the definition of "android" is something like "humanoid robot."
