  1. First and foremost, forget my wife and two loving children - What I'm most thankful for is this podcast and June's continuing fear of robots.

    Now on to Hackers...

So within the first few minutes of watching this film, I was floored by a few things:

    1) Zero Cool, as an 11 year old boy, caused a 7 point drop in the NY Stock Exchange. So based on this small piece of information, I think we can assume this equated to millions of dollars lost and a large amount of people losing their savings. So what's his punishment... Don't use a computer or a touch tone phone for 7 years and $45,000! $45K? I mean they should have hit his family with a $500K penalty or something that would make us feel that his punishment put the family in ruins, thus causing late night arguments between his parents and eventually leading them to divorce.

    2) I can't get a handle on Dade's mom. We all know that on his 18th birthday, Dade is allowed back on a computer. First of all, what 18 year old is now mature enough to not cause mayhem? Be that as it may, his mom asks him on the day he is allowed back on a computer... "What are you doing?" How does Dade reply, " I'm taking over a TV Network." No concern comes from the mom. But then when she confronts him in the shower, she gets angry that he's back online. But isn't he allowed to by law and honestly, did she just think he was playing Doom or Duke Nukeum?

    3) If Dade stayed true to his 7 year sentence of staying offline, is he some kind of genius? After that kind of hiatus, he still knows all the ins and outs of hacking? There has been no advancement in security systems since he last hacked?

In the novelization they go into more detail about how Dade had been still hanging out with hackers while on probation and keeping up with the tech.

  2.

The director Iain Softley is a member of the organisation I work for, and that interview was done in the morning in a room just across from my desk, so I listened to it live, so to speak.

He's actually around quite a lot, so I should point him to @HDTGM or this thread. Maybe I should wait until the episode is out. I have a feeling they will be largely positive, though.

oh wow, I am actually a big fan of his, I really liked Skeleton Key.

  3.

I agree, it's just missing this.

btw "fanny pack" I own this movie on dvd and I love it. but it is just a podcast, so. now you know how I feel when they did conair and Zardoz, I am sure this is going to turn into a thank god this got made show.

fixed it but you tell me, it's better with the wink.

dropped the file size down to 1mb for mobile users.

    Yes this is AWESOME!

    Killer refresh rate.

  4. The worst people are the ones who complain about the hacking "visuals" in the movie, what , because you want to watch 90 minutes of people typing code? Plus if you watch the bonus featurette in the 20th anniversary blu-ray you see just how much work went into this movie, especially the art direction of those visuals scenes. The writer went to 2600 meetings and talked to a bunch of hackers in NYC to get stuff right. Yes the people portraying hackers are ridiculously beautiful, but at least they are pale and fairly skinny freaks. Plus who didn't want a Cyberdelia type place to hang out as a teenager?!

Clearly I am too close to this movie. I'll just be plugging my ears and closing my eyes until next weeks ep.

  5. Oh Hackers. Like I needed an excuse to see this movie for like the hundredth time.

Funny story maybe for only me but years ago a friend and I were talking about this movie. He brought up how much he loved the movie and how the music really got him electronica music. I couldn't remember the music at all when he starts to sing it remind me. He then proceeds to start singing the Mortal Kombat music but in place of shouting "Mortal Kombat" proceeds to shout "hack the planet." When I told him that was the Mortal Kombat music he was confused and then called for his girlfriend to come in. He started doing it again and when it came time to shout he pointed at her and she too said "hack the planet." Every time I watch Hackers now I am confused why the Mortal Kombat music is not in it.

This soundtrack is awesome, its actually out of print now and a collectors item. I was introduced to electronic music from this movie: Kruder Dorfmeister, Orbital, Underworld, Prodigy, Massive Attack...sigh

  6. This movie is constantly on Cozi TV in LA, which is where I happened to catch an INSANE scene between Alec Baldwin and Anne Heche. Yes, Anne Heche is in this. Alec Baldwin is so awful in this movie, almost like he is doing an Al Pacino impression. it has a %15 on Rotten Tomatoes. Need I say more?
