  1. I haven't seen Edge of Tomorrow, but it's got a 90% from critics and a 92% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. That doesn't mean it's actually good, but worst movie ever?

can we turn this thread into a discussion of how fucking great Edge of Tomorrow is, I saw it yesterday and it's hands down the movie of the summer, probably the best action movie i've seen in forever.

  2. My list is:

1.) The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - this really needs to happen.

oh fuck yeah, i saw this on cable the other day and maybe i was feeling masochistic so i decided to watch some of it, i forgot just how fucking terrible it is. it would be perfect, plus since Jason seems to be a real comic book dude i'd love to hear his thoughts on how it compares to the book, assuming he's read it

  3.

Seconding the latter as the way to get caught up on the Harmontown D&D game. Which will make the rules lawyers here weak in the knees.

I don't think Harmontown is really all that crazy with rules, Spencer's a really great DM and does incredibly well at keeping the game moving along with all the craziness, the players maybe be drunk and goofing around and not to concerned with the rules or whatever but Spencer seems really on top of everything, I think he follows the rules pretty well actually. I think having him do all the dice rolls and stuff is more a matter of efficiency and ease of play in that setting. I love the Harmontown D&D it's hilarious and Spencer's creativity and storytelling is top notch, plus all the players are playing it so chaotically it's like having a party full of Gerry's, it's incredible. Also, if there's on thing that party doesn't suffer from that Nerd Poker has yet to conquer is the indecisiveness, their decisions may be wildly miscalculated but they never sit around for an hour hemming and hawing and not doing anything (unless Dan's really drunk, but at least that's funny)

I don't mean that to be a diss on NP either, I just think they could really benefit a little from, pardon the expression, rolling the dice a little more on their decisions. All the best episode moments are when someone does something without thinking to much. for example, if Ken had just kept having Bart cower and hide from the water box instead of just saying fuck it and cracking it open we'd have no Sparklett water adventure, if Blaine didn't just fly off to find the skiff without consulting anyone they all would've probably crashed into the sun, and shit if Brian hadn't chopped a dude or Gerry hadn't lit the bar on fire we'd probably still be watching Houg do magic with even less of an adventure happening.

  4. What, do you want him to preface everything he says with "MY DAD IS A HOLLYWOOD LAWYER"?

I feel like Armen's shtick is not genuine and that he is kind of mocking people who are genuinely anxious with an act he is putting on, so I don't like him, but hating him because of what he was born into isn't fair and comes from jealousy.

Since when is shtick ever genuine? That's the point, it's a persona, a gimmick for comedic effect. if you're going to get annoyed by that then why not get annoyed by Howard's shtick? Are we all going to pretend that the fratty douchebag beach dude persona that is Dragon Boy Suede is actually him?

Maybe that's the reason why all these people hate Armin on Who Charted to begin with, they're not getting the asshole alpha man fantasy they get vicariously through Howard's shtick.

  5. Okay I'm only 35 minutes in, but honest question --is Todd seriously a comedian? I've never listened to his stuff but so far on here he's not responding to any of Scott's bits and he's answering everything with complete seriousness.

Maybe he'll get funnier as it goes on (hopefully).

"I've never listened to anything but 35 minutes of a podcast unrelated to his comedy but i feel confident to say that one of the funniest most well respected comedians who's been doing stand up longer than i've been alive isn't funny, i just thought i'd tell all you people who actually know who he is my dumb thoughts"

    SHUT THE FUCK UP!

go find some of his comedy and educate yourself you dunce

  6. Funny coincidence - Blaine joked about Episode I coming out in the '60s, and said that it pre-dated 2001 (i.e. the Kubrick movie) by a year and a half, when in fact it came out in late May 1999, so it actually did pre-date the year 2001 by almost exactly a year and a half.

Now this is the type of nerdiness I enjoy reading on this board.

  7. i kind of agree too, it's an interesting theory but it's far to neat and tidy and overlooks a lot of more more specific regional things.

For example, I grew up in Buffalo, NY, according to this theory its apparently part of Yankeedom, as well as the rest of the great lakes region but it's nothing like Boston or the rest of the New England. The language, the culture etc. doesn't really match as far as i know. It's very specific location has made it a weird hybrid of of a lot of cultures. It was founded by French fur traders, not the English and it's real boom into a major city was due to it's placement at the other end of the Erie Canal which lead to a huge influx of people and trade coming up from NYC, at the same time it also has a lot more in common with the midwest than the east, like saying pop instead of soda. plus there's all kind of other weird cultural traditions, like, is there anywhere else in the country where they celebrate Dyngus Day? it's a weird Polish holiday where you throw water on girls and hit them with pussy willows. it's real!

  8. listen to the James Bonding podcast from a few weeks ago, they cover Live and Let Die, with special guest PFT!

it's a much more in depth discussion of all the nuttiness than we'd probably get on HDTGM, Matt and Matt are such super fans that they know all of the weird details and background and shit.
