    Well, he does claim to have been born in Philly and raised in New York (That's when he's talking to an imaginary woman on the street though.)

     

    The european vampire idea makes some sense but I don't really hear any euro. Best I can tell, it sounds like he's doing a Young Keanu reeves impression the whole time. It just sounds like he's doing a california valley girl / surfer dude thing without all the 'like's and 'woah's. But it came out a year before Bill and Ted and I'm not really familiar with Keanu's earliest work.

    As much as I like the Alien and Predator flicks, I could never get into any of the comics really, because when the two main draws are monsters that can't talk, you have to rely on the human characters to move the stories along, and it's usually just the same old uninteresting shit.

     

    I've really really enjoyed all the fire and stone series because they leaned into the idea that human characters move the story along, by having the same cast of characters perpetuate all four series of Prometheus, Aliens, AVP, and Predator. So they weren't just randoms usurping the Predator characters. By the time AVP came out, the human characters were already the connecting thread. They actually make a great blueprint for how an AVP shared cinematic universe should or could be done.

    That movie was perfectly what it wanted to be.

     

    Hahah it certainly was and I had some good laughs watching it. But usually I can get myself invested in characters in even the worst movies but it's kind of impossible when your main character is both off camera and has no lines of dialogue for the entire movie. Though it did get funnier and funnier every time Sharlto popped back into the movie in a different disguise lol.

    Great point sycasey. But you don't hire Gerard Butler and deny the audience a view of his glory by going into his POV. lol though they could have at least taken the Doom/Karl Urban route of going into his POV for just a climactic fight scene near the end. I'm guessing Hardcore Henry is the best movie to even attempt a full length POV and it was a disaster of a film. (No matter how much I love Sharlto Copley)

    Saw Oculus in Theatres and wasn't a big fan, despite the fact I'd watch Katee Sackhoff in anything.

    On this note, I just compiled a list of movies to watch this November that are mostly in the Halloween feels:

    Then last night I watched Hush, which I highly highly recommend! And tried to start my first full viewing of the original Halloween before I ended up falling asleep. One of these days I'm gonna actually watch the whole damn thing.

     

    Ditto. Hush is a must watch for horror movies, on Netflix. Also watched this Mark Duplass joint Creep, tough to get through but worth it. Good if you can laugh your way through it.

     

    On the topic of Halloween movie watching, remember when they use to just call them "Scary" movies? Now it's all "Horror" this, and "Thriller" that. It's just not the same. Like Nightmare on Elm was a straight up Scary movie lol

    Damn dude, I had no idea you had so much prison rep. Now i have to go back and see what you had to say about the Faceoff episode and any other prison related episodes.

     

    Edit: Also, the singular take away from that post should be the words "civil rights issue". And yeah I get that it's a Neveldine/Taylor joint, but come on. I feel like we're all past the whole running man game cliche of treating prisoners and convicts like human trash to be used in a real life GTA game.

    Yes! I found this lovely chart showing the total number of death row inmates by year.

    Now, I'm pretty sure this includes a ton of carry-over. This isn't total intake year over year, it's the running total of the death row population. Cause some of these convictions drag on for years and others get overturned and appealed, etc. So even though the current 3000 or so death row inmates would be enough for one season/year of 'Society', if not a bit low, the stock of inmates would run dry by the second season.

    The more interesting bit from this website and database is that there have only been about 1430 executions in the United States since 1977. Which is an average of about 35 pear year... So it's more like the number of death penalty convicts would have to increase by like 10,000 fold to make Society viable? Of course like Ryan Sz points out, they could be out-sourcing their convict intake to foreign countries as well, but did that come across in the movie at all? (Really, im asking. cause i didn't watch this piece of shit.)

     

    Also, of the roughly 2,900 inmates currently on deathrow, 741 of them are in or from California. ONE QUARTER of death row inmates, sick twisted violent blood-thirsty killers, are in the golden state. Guys, what the fuck is happening down there? Be careful earwolf people. <3

    Hahaha thank you Kit, reading this and your many other posts on this episode has cleared up a lot of my questions.

     

    Now I'm thinking it's insane that they populate an entire game on a monthly(?) basis with only DEATHROW convicts?? This is some hell of mass culling. I guess that's the whole idea so my thinking that they were giving these convicts a death sentence by making them bots was both wrong and right. Really they're giving everyone involved a death sentence and the convicts choosing to be bots are just picking the shortest way out? Why go through up to 30 rounds of psychological torture when you can get it over with in one. But then why are there a ton of other randoms inside society including sedwig. How are rounds ended? Is it a timed thing or a last man standing kind of thing? In which case how do Sedwig or any others get out alive.

     

    Also, using the stats Fister Roboto gave us on the last page, can we estimate the US has about 225 deathrow inmates per year, past 40 or so years? Assuming this show needs to happen fairly regularly to maintain some kind of ratings or status, let's say monthly? 12 times a year, that means there are at best about 20 players available per tournament/culling. Not even enough to last 30 rounds let alone populate the game and whatever sized area Society is. The number of deathrow inmates would have to grow by ten fold, at the low end of the scale, to even come close to populating the game. God I hate future distopya movies. They just don't make any fucking sense. Sorta like me right now trying to make sense of this.

     

    I really ought to just watch the movie I guess. Woulda taken less time than me just trying to puzzle out the basic premise of the movie.

    i really enjoyed this movie but i can see why so many people hate it. i think if i really thought about it i'd end up hating ... but as i watched it i had a whole lot of fun .... and when dexter started dancing ... the smile on my face was like that on a jack-o-lantern.

    OK I haven't watched this movie, and maybe this was brought up in the podcast, but I have a big question. I mean I have a bunch of little questions like wtf is the plot of this movie, is someone controlling michael C hall, is that person the villain or just another idiot playing this society game? etc. But this scene has me really confused. So people get to control convicts as avatar people in 'society', check, got that part. Sooo I figured this was a limit of one person to one avatar control, right? Cause how you gonna control multiple bodies at the same time.

     

    SO, what the hell is this choreographed dance scene?? I thought they were probably all convicts and thus other players? Shouldn't they be competing? As opposed to working out dance routines? Like, they aren't robots running the same program are they? So am I supposed to understand that a dozen or so players got their avatars together and worked out a flash mob dance routine to some 70yo tune?

     

    Oh so I guess there are 'bots'. That seems really fucking stupid. Bots never survive, game AIs are always shit. This is like giving those convicts a death sentence. (I'm still reading through and catching up on the thread)

    If the Punisher was autistic and had a day job, he'd be the Accountant, which is ironic, because the film co-stars the Punisher (Bernthal), who has now fought both Daredevils onscreen! Anyway, I liked the movie a lot.

     

    :lol: I was going to call it autistic john wick but shied away from the reveal. (I kinda avoided trailers and spoilers for this so the whole on-the-spectrum thing was a funny reveal for me)

     

    And great point about the double daredevil connection with Bernthal! Glad I brought this up.

    I have a soft spot for almost any action-comedy movie and this one in particular. I feel like action movies in the post-arnold/stallone era have completely missed the boat for the most part, taking themselves way too seriously to seem badass and ending up full of cliches. Boring. It's an absurd genre so I really appreciate it when action movies aren't afraid to poke fun at themselves and lean into the comedy aspect of it. Having Werner Herzog as the villain is just the cherry on top.

    It premieres down here friday next week... Is it good???

     

    I really enjoyed it but not in the way I expected. I expected it to be a cut and dry action thriller but it was more like a john wick kind of humorous thriller. It really skirts the line between taking itself seriously and intentionally going for awkward humor. Thankfully a lot of people in the theatre were laughing so it didn't feel too inappropriate that I was laughing constantly at random jokes and details. Won't get into spoilers but I will say there was at least one plot twists even I never saw coming, it's great. My friend thought it had too many disparate plot threads, like it was trying to be several different movies at once. It's sort of true but I didn't mind it, thought it actually added up to a pretty coherent story.

    Yaaaaaaa, see, I prefer my disgusting mess films not to involve children or be made 30 years ago... But again, I don't suggest this for the show, just for the board. I don't think it was a great film, but I also don't think it's fair to call it a xerox because its weirdness is comparable to past greats. Also I've found myself unable to watch tim & eric in the past, or Waters, or Lynch. The later two just make me uncomfortable and bored, which is torture. T&E were funny but totally unmemorable because everything is a flash in the pan. So I'd give credit to Greasy Strangler for at least being on that level of weirdness, while balancing humour and discomfort within a traditional narrative arc. + dat soundtrack, can't say that enough.

    Surprised this hasn't come up yet. This decade's most disturbing and deranged piece of film making:

    The Greasy Strangler

     

     

     

    Disclaimer. The trailer makes it seem actually kind of decent, however deranged. But in truth it's fucking terrible in a The Room kind of way with about 1000000x more penis, disgusting sex, and greasy serial killing. perhaps the best thing of the movie is the original soundtrack that's great. On the other hand all the line delivery is fucking brutal, perhaps intentionally so. The part that reminds me of the room is all this disjointed, stiff dialogue which makes no sense at all. Also they often did this thing of creating scenes that repeat two lines of dialogue over and over and over for maybe 2 minutes until your brain turns to mush. The outfits are all disturbing in a real sad way. It's real hard to tell how unintentionally or deliberately bad the film is... But one thing's for sure, it's both hilarious and scarring. The stuff of nightmares.

     

    I can't expect they would ever cover it on the podcast because there's no way June would get through more than 2 minutes of it. Also there's just way too much dick. Myself, I caught it at the local indy theatre with a friend to call his bluff (he was claiming it would be best movie of the year lol.) Thought it was worth recommending for the more adventurous HDTGM fans...

     

    p.s. Leaving the theatre after the movie, my friend who is not an HDTGM listener literally asked "How did that get made?" So, there's that.
