Hopefully all the BvS hate will remind people that this movie wasn't very good either.

I always get this one confused with Kickboxer which is also a crazy movie.

This makes less sense than the Fast 7 line about the street always winning in a street fight.

    Episode 130 - Teen Witch

I love this. I am definitely going reference this video in the future when someone defends something offensive with "it's just a joke" "stop censoring comedy" etc.

    Man of Steel (2013)

OK I feel like this one needs revisiting. It seems like there was plenty of discussion of this when it came out but people had just seen it in theaters and were blinded by the visual effects and Henry Cavill's torso. I'm not sure if this is a HDTGM movie but it's definitely a bad movie if only because of the writing. The effects and cinematography were top notch but some of the plot contrivances were absurd. In the beginning we find out Krypton is fucked but Jor-El is more concerned about ending caste politics than saving his race. Hey guy maybe use your advanced space program to escape with the help of Zod THEN try to enact your free society. Also the Kryptonian elders take time to have a trial for Zod while their planet is collapsing. There are ways to tell this origin story in ways that makes sense, this movie does not care about making sense. Meanwhile in Kansas as others commenters have mentioned, Jon Kent's fear of people finding out about Clark is stupid (everyone in town should already know) and his death is meaningless. When Amy Adams showed up I didn't know that she was a reporter because there was no way a court would force the US military to let journalists stick their noses into the investigation of what they believe to be a Russian submarine. My biggest gripe with this movie is that at least 40% of dialogue is expository. This is forgivable in the beginning when they have explain all the space and super power stuff, but it continues throughout. There were multiple 20 minute stretches where the only things said were things like "we're gonna crash" "[the codex] is supposed to work differently." The movie doesn't trust the audience to pay attention so it has its characters tell us exactly what's happening every five seconds (counting all the times this happens would be a great drinking game). The worst is at the end where Zod says "There's only one way this ends, Kal. Either you die, or I do" and then that is literally what happens. Criminal misuse of the word evolution: Faora: [Beating up Kal-El] You are weak, Son of El, unsure of yourself. The fact that you possess a sense of morality, and we do not, gives us an evolutionary advantage. And if history has proven *anything*... Faora: [Faora picks up Kal-El throws him into another building] Faora: ...It is that evolution always wins. The other Kryptonians instantly have super powered strength, speed, and durability, does Earth's sun just give them eye related super powers and flight? That's pretty lame. The whole conflict of the movie could have been avoided if when Zod showed up Superman had just said "oh you want to terraform a planet? How about Mars it's close or literally any where else besides Earth." Finally, Superman kills a bunch of Kryptonian babies for no reason. He blows up the ship full of fetuses because Zod is on it even though it won't physically hurt Zod and the terraform machine had already been destroyed. Clark just wants to be the only Kryptonian.

This drove me nuts as well. Also there are multiple shots where you can clearly see that it is a set based on the ceiling.

    Episode 130 - Teen Witch

During the Ondine play who is the director? Isn't Louise's teacher friend (Ms. Malloy) the director? How many faculty are involved in this play? Brad as an 18 year old senior is getting English help from the barely 16 Luiz Guzman. Is Serena Louise's estranged grandmother? Maybe her selfish and avaricious use of magic made her family push her away. She admits that she misused her powers in the past. What the hell was going on when Serena pulls out a book and says that the pictures from the 1600s are of her and Louise? There was a reincarnation plot line that did not get enough development. Frog man Rex=bestiality/non-consensual sex. Louise is already going to use magic to rape Brad so why does she need mood lighting? Brad has never been to her place before, how does he know that there are supposed to be chairs in her room? Louise rags on Randa for being superficial to Brad but is herself the most superficial person in the movie. Argentina doesn't have counts, they're a purely European thing. Is he a Spanish count from Argentina? Is he even real or is he some sort of golem that Louise created from mud and menstrual blood? With different music the sex scene in the abandoned house becomes part of a horror movie. Quotes from my girlfriend "is it still statutory rape if he's under a spell?" "this is horrible" "is this all they're going to show?!" Her existential crisis is bullshit. Scientifically everyone just likes her because of the magic. Before she had powers no liked her and she never demonstrates any value other than being kind of smart and having the aforementioned magical powers. Randa has to watch her date make out with another girl at prom. She never even does anything that bitchy to Louise. She sets LG up with hipster rapist David but the movie acknowledges even that is better than nothing. In the vein of Staying Alive, our main protagonist is the villain of the movie.

I am really glad this movie gives me an opportunity to express my hatred of Duckie. I just saw Pretty in Pink for the first time and I could not get over how much of whiny asshole he was. Definite Nice Guyâ„¢ prototype. Maybe instead of weirdly obsessing over Molly Ringwald he should have found someone who could actually view him as a romantic partner.
  11. My choices would be: The BIM song from The Apple Go Ninja Go from TMNT 2 A View to a Kill Wicky Wicky Wild Wild West My Hat is Like a Shark's Fin from Deep Blue Sea The R&B track from The Room Spice Up Your Life from Spice World Angel of the City from Cobra Shock Me from Perfect Far From Over from Staying Alive Bonus track: The jingle from Halloween III

Drinkenstein deserves some recognition as well.

Episode 129 - The Apple: LIVE!

I know it's a bit cliche to attach a Jacob's Ladder scenarios to HDTGM movies but I think this case actually has some interesting implications. I believe the turn from reality happens around two thirds of the way through the movie just after Alphie gets beat up for trying to talk to Bibi and punching Roger Daltrey. This is the point where the movie diverges from the classic fame rise, fall, and redemption plot. Alphie wakes up and the land lady is talking about him trying to kill himself. It's worth noting that this is the character's lowest point. He's alone, broke, rejected professionally and romantically. The next thing that happens is Pandi's nightmare Cosby seduction. Why does Boogalow need to corrupt Alphie too? Bibi is his next star and audiences apparently hate Alphie. Then he meets the previously unestablished hippie commune that live in an implausible cave under a bridge. Shake also lets Bibi go for absolutely no reason other than it fits Alphie's fantasy of escaping commercialism and pursuing blind idealism. The slap dash deus ex machina appearance of Mr. Topps at the end is just the cherry on top. Which brings me to the crux of my theory. We establish early in the film that drugs are widely available and commonly used in this world's society. I believe that after Alphie's life collapses around him he attempts to overdose on pills and the rest of the movie is his dream from his pre-fatal coma leading up to him drifting into oblivion chasing a spectral Cadillac that does not exist. The movie lapses into dream logic throughout but the latter half does so especially. I'd also like to call out how most of songs were mostly just a single line repeated over and over (Child of Love being the worst offender). The writers couldn't even put together a chorus.

    The Spirit (2008)

I agree that the unbearable dullness of it might make this a poor HDTGM, but this film could potentially break the boring barrier and come out on the other side, ie. a lively discussion of how something so lifeless and slogging could get produced.

    Teen Witch

I enjoyed how many of the "teenagers" looked like they were pushing 40 years old and how the nerdy cousin would fit in at any hipster party based on how he was dressed.

    Swordfish (2001)

It sort of has the mini twist in that you think that Travolta is just having a dumb meta conversation about Dog Day Afternoon while having a cappuccino but actually there are guys with guns pointed at him. I also couldn't get past Travolta's ridiculous goatee or Jackman's single earring.

    xXx

This could be just the right film to get the James Bonding Matts out of retirement.

    Meet the Feebles (1989)

Only if they can get Guy Montgomery and Tim Batt from the "Worst Idea of All Time" to come on. I'd also accept Jermaine Clement. Gotta have Kiwi representation for this one. Like how they brought Nathan Fielder on for Gooby.

    The Thomas Crown Affair (1999)

Once again for a lover of art he treats paintings pretty recklessly, reinforcing my belief that he's just an asshole. There are still parts of the heist that confound me. Like how he disguised a heater as the leg of that bench without anyone noticing.

    EPISODE 125 - Steel: LIVE!

I agree. They were sort of a non sequitur but I enjoyed them. Maybe now that The League is over Paul can write a new show about being the desperate manager of the last brick and mortar video rental store. Netflix could ironically pick it up. Also the correct answer to who should play Steel in the remake is Idris Elba. He's been putting in the work.
