    Episode 192 - Striptease: LIVE!

Absolutely. When I mentioned that she could go in with those gross ideas about erotic dancing and the dancers, it would be a learning situation for her and then, by proxy, us the audience as well. Because yes, this movie tries to show these women are good people who jump at the chance to help their fellow dancer (one girl even tries to convince Demi that this is just as much a honest way of living as anything else) but when Demi is our protagonist and therefore the audience's view into this world, it fucking suuuucks to watch her gag at the idea that she herself is topless on that stage. Also because I believe that is Sandy's view of the pageant world before she goes undercover in MC, but when she comes out of it she has friends and people she now respects because she didn't know what it was like before hand.

She could go in with these gross ideas about what erotic dancing is like and what these women have to deal with and then it becomes Miss Congeniality and suddenly Sandra Bullock is actually there and we're all happier cause we're watching a better movie.

Couldn't agree more. Feasibly they could've made her a disgraced detective that had an air of "did she help him?" about her in regards to Terminator 2. It still would've been a little hard to swallow why she was then losing her daughter but maybe if they tried to paint her as a crooked cop then that would make a little more sense as to why she loses everything so easily.

Honestly, Idk why I'm even trying to get answers. Nothing is making me feel any better about this trash fire.

Okay that covers why she gets fired, but still doesn't cover wtf he did and that's part of the thing I'm dying to know.

Either way, married or not at the time of the firing, my question still stands. Why does she get punished for something he does? What does he do to get her fired?

Then she should have never been hired if she wouldn't pass a background check. Those things don't usually come up after you've been settled in the job.

    Episode 192 - Striptease: LIVE!

God, June fuckin NAILED it on her criticisms and did an excellent "This Week in Feminism." This "movie" is fucking disgusting in every single aspect. From the judges ability to scoff at a single mother who doesn't currently have a job, to the way she scoffs at dancing as a profession, to the way every man turns into a gd Tex Avery cartoon the minute she walks on stage, to Jerry being written off as "harmless" when he full on stalked her (and later we discover built a shrine to her), to Ving blaming Demi being on edge on her fuckin period, to Burt Reynolds referring to her as a creature, to literally every scene in this movie. I can't even go through everything that made me cringe because I'll basically be posting the whole script and highlighting the parts where the other dancers have each other's backs because that's literally the only good thing this movie shows, but then June is right in that not even Demi sticks up for the girls because she is seen as "above" them. I'm so fucking sick of these fucking types of movies that posit themselves as liberating women when they do nothing but shit on them for 2 hours. Yeah I feel super duper liberated now... So with all of that said I have a few questions: What did Terminator 2 even do to get her fired? Why is it her entire career as a secretary hinges on what this asshole's criminal record is like? Did he do something through her job? Like did he steal something that he wouldn't have gotten hold of if he hadn't been married to the FBI's secretary? She mentions how impossible it seems to get $15,000 for an appeal in 6 weeks, but she also says this is already 8 weeks in to working at the Eager Beaver. Has she not already made some money? Is that the additional money she needs now that she is already so much in? If she truly did not want to be an erotic dancer, then why is she? I understand the hopelessness women can feel and understand that many women do not feel they have a choice when it comes to becoming a dancer or a sex worker, but we don't actually see that kind of hopelessness here. She goes from court to 8 weeks later without the audience being clued in to the fact that she tried to get any other jobs. I know they want us to accept that she felt this was her only option (and I believe she says to the detective that this is the job that will pay her enough in such short of time), but this all just goes back to how fucking awful this movie is to women and to erotic dancers. Fuck this fucking movie.

Oh you didn't have to do that (especially since that's not the only one lmao) but I do appreciate it!

Moving this over because I know a lot of commenters don't read the mini-threads... Here's a request because suddenly I feel like it needs to be said... For C&Os can we not go into detail about which strip clubs people have been to? I understand that this is probably not an accurate representation of a real club, but I honestly don't need details nor images in my brain of anyone on here ogling topless women.

    Episode 191.5 - Minisode 191.5

I'm sure we were pretty much saying the same thing there, but I wanted to clarify that I absolutely would listen to anyone that has worked in that industry and can speak on the way it's portrayed. Especially since there is always a different story from people witnessing it from the outside vs who is actually in the thick of it.

    Episode 191.5 - Minisode 191.5

Here's the thing, if a bouncer or a dancer that have actually worked at clubs came on to talk about the differences in real life vs this movie then I of course would be all ears to hear about the ways this movie took hard turns, but what I personally don't want to read is how so and so went to a club and noticed things, because that's going into territory that makes me very uncomfortable. I absolutely would much rather hear from people that did the work and can speak from their own personal experiences of being workers, not patrons. Also it's like this movie is so painstakingly gross that the ways this club worked was literally the last thing on my mind the entire time.

Well apparently someone yelled "How's yo dick?!" at Nicole Byer and she legit didn't remember she had said that on the Bloodsport episode so FYI to anyone that meets her not to yell that at her cause she's not gonna respond the way you want her lol.

I did and I think it's better than the first, but I also don't agree that every second season is a step down cause I still absolutely loved season 2 of Jessica Jones and season 2 of Luke Cage is in my opinion much better than season 1.

    Film Struck

We don't really have in between threads here like we do over at HDTGM but I wanted to see if anyone here was using Film Struck and if they liked it. I'm considering dropping one of the many movie subscription services I have and getting it because they have a shit ton of classic movies that you can't see anywhere else (and appears like a few even covered here on Unspooled). I have a friend that works for the social media team at TCM and Film Struck so she's been talking it up non-stop but I know that it's not just because she works for them but because she really loves their service, but I do also want some opinions from people not on their payroll lol.

In perfect Paul fashion he mispronounced Hannah's name so I'm sure it doesn't matter everyone can find it but it's not Goldsby it's Hannah Gadsby. But yes every single person needs to watch Nanette because it's absolutely beautiful and a true piece of art.

Musical Mondays Week 42 Blues Brothers

My mom just wasn't the kind of person that was like, "Oh this is what you HAVE to see from my childhood!" She wasn't even the one who ended up showing me Star Wars it was my aunt and uncle, and then another one of her sisters is who introduced me to The Beatles. Like my mom just listened to what she listened to or watched what she watched and so by osmosis of that is how I got into SNL but it wasn't any of the older stuff it was what was currently on in the 90s. There are so many movies and shows that she loved that get referenced now and she's like "You have to have seen that" and I'm like "No... when would I have been introduced to a thing I'm not even sure I heard of until this moment..." Like It's Garry Shandling's Show! We watched the Judd Apatow Doc together and she was telling me about how she died laughing watching IGSS on TV and turned to me like I would have seen it and I was like "Mom... I was born a year before it ended... If you didn't show me this how would I have gotten the chance to watch it?"

Musical Mondays Week 42 Blues Brothers

I couldn't agree more. I chose not to rewatch this one because I actually used the movie budget I have this week on 2001 but the parts that really stuck with me are definitely the music and the scenes that have become iconic, which I would say rightfully so. I wonder if like tomspanks said that because of my lack of knowledge of 70s SNL humor does it not stick with me, but I can't even really say it's a generational thing if y'all gen x'ers are feeling the same kind of feelings I am. Also realizing I can't really say I don't get the 70s SNL humor if something like Land Shark still makes me giggle. I will say that I do like this movie, but certainly can't say I loved it.

    2001: A Space Odyssey

Oh I forgot that I was gonna mention that I felt no empathy for HAL at all. Not that I don't necessarily believe that he could feel things, but I attribute his feelings more to someone we might classify as a sociopath. In the end when he keeps repeating that he was afraid I didn't believe that he was really afraid, but that he knew if he could play to Dave's empathy then that would save him. It was all about manipulation to get what he wanted, which was to live and continue his mission. It was fascinating to watch and I was waiting for Dave to give it at some point but was glad he didn't.

    2001: A Space Odyssey

So this was my first viewing of 2001 ever. Finally got to see it last night and unfortunately I should have napped before I started because I did fall asleep 40 minutes in. Not anything to do with the movie itself (maybe a little bit?) and more to do with my own physical state before settling in for a movie. I say maybe a little bit because at 40 minutes in the plot still hasn't taken off. We've just gotten out of the Dawn of Man sequence and into Dr. Floyd's part of the story, and with all of the musical transgressions and lack of dialogue, it's very easy to see how this really put my mind at ease to fall asleep. Obviously I have become more aware of the use of the music in this film rather than the film itself over the years. The only thing I truly knew about plot wise was the line "I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that." Which, I believe I became wholly aware of after seeing Moon in 2009 and hearing how much the AI in that movie was viewed as a direct reference (some said ripoff even) of HAL. Other than that I'm surprised at how little I knew about this movie other than the musical sequences. Also it really wasn't until I heard Amy and Paul mention how much this predicted in terms of technology that I even recognized that they were using things that had been previously unheard of. The iPads and TV screens on the back of chairs completely went unnoticed because that's what we're so used to now in 2018, but my goodness 50 years ago this was absolutely mind-boggling. Part of me is sad I'll never be able to experience this movie the way it was truly intended to be seen (and I just mean in the sense that I'll never be able to see it 50 years ago) but it's amazing to see how much it holds up and doesn't feel dated at all. I can't say this was a perfect film but this is definitely one of the best Sci-Fi movies I've ever seen in my life and I'm kinda glad that I waited to see this until I knew I could fully appreciate every aspect of it, whether I fully got what Kubrick was trying to say or not.
