    Veronica Mars episode 2

I'm not going to lie, I legit thought they killed Ryan Hansen at the beginning and I thought this was a completely ridiculous send off.

I'm currently anti-Veronica and Team Logan. Logan is apparently in anger management due to violent outbursts and she's actively taunting him into being angry. What's her fucking problem? I'd get it if this scene was written like she was genuinely thoughtful about how refusing his proposal affected him but, nah, she feels like she wants him angry.

    Now you get it lol

I'm 100% fine with redemptive arcs but he hasn't earned it yet in my opinion. I've even said that he's grown and maybe they could start this season with them together. I'm not sure what you all want from me on this lol.

LIKE CAMERON SAID!!! ADMIT YOU ARE WRONG!!!!!!!

I don't know where the characters are at in their current lives (so, maybe this is irrelevant now) but, based on my memory, they shouldn't have gotten together in the first place (but you're right. I do remember him having grown before the movie). So, five years of history doesn't erase the previous years of being a bully/jerk. To me, he hadn't put in the work yet by the end of the movie. Maybe by the start of the new season he has and now they can get together.

And honestly, I'm never going to be all in on Logan and he's facing an uphill battle with me personally.

I'm going to watch it. I want to finish Marvelous Mrs. Maisel first.

I do agree that he had a lot of growing to do about being a bully but I thought that in season 2 and 3 they had done a good job of showing him grow from that and own up to his bully behavior and also own up to the fact that he was perpetuating abuse when he was being abused himself. But I am also always going to be on Logan's side lol! I mean ultimately I was always on Veronica's side unless she was with Duncan lmao, but yeah seeing how much Logan grew during the new season really solidified my love for him.

They are married. I don't know what's going on in her life but, girl, you can do better I promise you.

I'm also pretty confident he dies but I don't know anything about how/why.

Okay so that's not the spoiler I was thinking of, but at this point why do you think she can do better? They've seemingly been together solidly for ~5 years at this point (if we're looking at it all happening in Real Time of course since the movie came out in 2015) and despite what people might think of Logan there's SOLID character development from him throughout the run of this universe.

    Plus... WATCH THE NEW SEASON

I haven’t watched the new season, but I wonder how much was because of Hulu’s demands. Hulu has the equivalent of hard R-rated material in its programming, and the Veronica Mars team were prepared to fully embrace that and had written a pilot with a lot of foul language in it, but Hulu wanted the program to remain TV-14.

Based on what I didn't like and reading comments from Rob Thomas and Kristen Bell after the season aired and everyone was pissed... It wasn't Hulu's fault... They decided they wanted to "take back their show" and stop giving "fan service" aka totally go against everything they had written up until this point.

    Ugh. Why? How?

I'll be honest, I had mostly forgotten why I hated Logan but I knew I hated him. So, I skimmed a Veronica Mars wiki of him (and got what I assume is a major season 4 spoiler) and hated him all over again. Also, why the heck did she date him? Veronica being emotionally stupid is starting to make sense.

Now hold on a minute there friend lol! Team Logan Echolls until the day I DIE!!!

How has she not grown? She was already more mature than everyone. I get some mature people go through a second adolescence to make up for not having one but that's not Veronica Mars. We heard her over monologue. We know who she is. I'm not expecting her to feel super old, but I expect gett to be a totally put together adult.

I haven't even watched it yet and I'm angry. Why?

Here's a minor spoiler: If Logan Echolls is the most emotionally mature person on screen then you know you've got a problem.

Yeah, I totally agree, and maybe I could have worded that better. I think that’s why I like to end it with the movie because you really felt she had grown and she’s where she either wants or needs to be. The new season felt reductive.

    100%

And to comment on your previous post, I can't even remember what happens specifically in that first episode cause I binged them all at once lol. But I have a lot more feelings about the writing and the season itself before even the thing that you know happens that made me angry lol.

Which like lol I feel telling Grudlian the quality was good while also saying THE WRITING SUCKED seems hypocritical but like you said earlier, the production value is on point and you can tell everyone brought their A game for it, but also it TOTALLY is reductive and feels off.

IIRC, part of my issue was that she’s an adult rather than a teenager so it loses some of its charm. It would be like if Neil Patrick Harris brought back Doogie Howser. Who wants to watch a show about an adult Doogie?

This is definitely part of my issue as well, but not because of them bringing it back - I was honestly in the camp of I would watch VM do her shit until she was Golden Girls age - but rather her characterization at this point. She's an adult acting the same as she did as a teenager, and that's fucking frustrating to watch.

Not even a spoiler for Grudlian, because as Cameron said, all of that is really in the first episode.

We watched the first episode and decided the movie was a fitting ending. I do, however, know what happens. I stand by my decision 😐

    I'm still angry.

You'd be surprised how much internet fervor I miss. I don't really do social media much.

Oof. I was going in with low expectations but this is worrying. I thought the movie was okay but an unnecessary coda.

I'm not going to be the best judge. I haven't seen the show since, idk, 2009? Even when the movie came out, I couldn't remember much of anyone's backstory or names (for example, I don't know who Gia is or why I should be upset that she died). So, if there is something super crazy, I might just fall back on "This isn't how I remember the show, but maybe I'm just forgetting it all????"

I woudn't even say that the quality is bad... there are just some decisions made by the show that are bad... like... really bad...

Is it better or worse than the movie? Because now you have me worried.

I actually loved the movie so I would say worse lol.

Honestly I'm surprised you haven't heard anything about it by now. The internet was literally on fire because of it.

ETA: I say I love the movie but I am still pissed off they killed Gia. JUSTICE FOR GIA!!!

  11. Re: The Calls

I feel like I've really made my stance on them clear by this point, but I do feel like it would be nice to keep calls to the "advice" part of the show and the forum for the C&Os part of the show. I feel like the forums are already losing a lot of their oomph, especially now that Who Charted is completely behind a paywall and Unspooled only looks at Facebook, also because lol the few bad apples from here. The more they accept calls for C&Os the more they let people know that's the way to go, and then they get bombarded with 500 calls telling Paul what the definition of "jam" is.

I forgot to answer this, but just a quick summation of my childhood sports, etc.:

    Dance (Tap and Acrobatics)
    Softball (Outfielder)
    Bowling
    Karate
Track (Long Jump and some long distance thing I forgot)

Can't say I was particularly good at any of these lol

Oh shit I forgot I was in Track too. I did shot-put and discus. I got one medal and that was my peak and never was good at it again.

Oof, yeah, that's true that's the origin of the name. Could do without that specific one though.

First one I went too was Six Flags Great America in the Chicago area with my family as a kid. But that was just sad because I wanted to go on the roller coasters but my cousins were too small and the adults didn't want to go. 😑

As for the Six Flags here, I liked the Superman coaster. Haven't been in a good few years though. It's expensive. 😭

Fiesta Texas is the only one where I got to meet Bugs Bunny so it holds a special place in my heart lol

I wanted to mention something similar about Six Flags too lol. Also been to Six Flags Over Texas a couple times and WB/DC characters and merch are quite popular. I have also talked to someone who used to work there as the Taz mascot and while I won't call it "slavery", working in those things under the conditions of the hot Texas summer definitely sounds like torture. I think he had some story too about someone vomiting inside the costume.

I don't doubt it!!! I knew a guy that after high school worked there in their dance performances and all I could think about was performing outside in the middle of summer and he wasn't even in one of the character costumes!

Mainly I wanted to make this comment because this is not the first time where I've heard Californians talk about Magic Mountain as if it is either the only Six Flags to exist or the first one to ever be built. Like bitches y'all know it's called Six Flags because of the amount of flags Texas had in it's existence right? (Sadly one of them was the Confederate flag and sadly it has been waving at the OG location ever since it was built and sadly there's been a fuck ton of arguments about whether or not to keep it...)

  15. Oh I just remembered I wanted to comment that Six Flags Magic Mountain is not the only one to have WB characters as the mascots. I live near Six Flags Over Texas (AKA the OG Six Flags built in 1961) and Bugs and the gang are ALL over that park. It also includes characters from the DC universe and many of our roller coasters are named after heroes and villains - my favorite being the Batman, but others love Mr. Freeze which I am too much of a coward to ever get on because the idea of starting off 0 to 60 immediately and BACKWARDS freaks me the fuck out.

  16. I had a lot of points I wanted to discuss after listening to this episode and magically they're just all gone. Poof.

I did feel the same as everyone else that I feel like the movie loses its steam once they marry, but I was legitimately shocked to find out that on Letterboxd I gave this a full 5 stars when I first watched it. It must have truly just dazzled me despite thinking now that the second half lacks that oomph. But I do disagree with the thought that there was no chemistry between Julie and Christopher. I feel that shit.

Also Christopher Plummer's hotness in this movie is just *chef's kiss* iconique.

  17. LIsten I am the right age for this movie. I was 7 years old when this was in theaters, and yes I did eat it the fuck up. Did I think this was a masterpiece up until listening to this episode? Yes...

Here's my actual question though - How can June and Jason destroy this movie so much and then turn around and pledge their love to something like Drop Dead Fred?!

So, let's carry on the discussion.  What sports did you do?

    I did:
    - Rugby, I played prop forward as well as an all encompassing "as soon as he gets the ball, fucking twat him"
    - Football, (actual football, not the armoured rugby football), I was a goalkeeper
    - Cricket, where I was labelled by one trainer "The most aggressive batsman I have ever witnessed in my 20 years coaching this sport"
    - Various throwing sports
    - MMA, I didn't ever get to fight because of injuries, but I know some stuff
    - Muay Thai, see above

I stopped all sports after my freshman year of high school because I wanted to focus more on singing and theater sooo take my level of these with a grain of salt lol.

    I did:
    - Ballet: 3 years as a kid. I looooved it, but couldn't continue after my grandmother passed because there was no one to take me to rehearsals anymore. I know I would've never gone further once I hit puberty because my body was definitely not the desirable ballerina body. However, seeing different bodies do it now would've been so influential to me as a child and maybe I would've demanded to be taken again.
    - Volleyball: Couldn't do an overhanded serve so never truly made it to a proper team but I loved playing anyway and was an excellent setter.
    - Basketball: Played only for a hot minute because my dad made me but it was fun.
    - Golf: See above.
    - Soccer: Was always the goalie (keeper) but took it as an insult because I couldn't run as fast as the forwards. Realized as an adult that it was because I had such a powerful kick that I could kick the ball from one end of the field to the other and that's what you need in a goalie lol, but no one actually TALKED to me about this so I thought they hated me and quit after a few years.
    - Tennis: Took lessons for a couple of years and it taught me that I was better at hitting in Softball so that leads to...
    - Softball: My one true love that I played throughout middle school and into high school (quit when times coincided with singing). Was a powerful hitter but not a great thrower so I felt insecure about my actual abilities. Again no one actually talked to me about these things lol. Fucked up my knees doing an improper slide into home. Still can't hear them pop when I do squats lol.

I think you might have heard that on Unspooled, but it wasn’t based on fact, it was Paul theorizing why he hadn’t been given a copy of the script to read through the WGA. It might have had fact behind it, but it felt like Paul was winging it.😁

Ah yes thank you! Which is now cleared up since Tarantino isn't even in the WGA. Okay, makes a whole lot of sense!

  20. 1 hour ago, sycasey 2.0 said:

    I hadn't heard that, though anything's possible.

I think the real answer is that Parasite was just that popular. It's worth noting that it and JoJo did win the Writers Guild awards as well, but Tarantino is not eligible for those because he's not in the WGA. (I don't think that hurts him, because he's got two Oscars for screenplay writing already.) And of course Parasite also won the SAG award for Best Ensemble, so that shows a lot of support from both the writers' branch and the actors' branch (the largest branch). This wasn't entirely out of the blue.

I usually never take the SAG awards into account, Hidden Figures won Best Ensemble just a couple of years ago and was on no one's mind about Best Picture. Sometime's the Actor's Guild and the Writer's Guild just knows what's up.

  21. 19 minutes ago, sycasey 2.0 said:

That's true, but Tarantino was also in that category and the Academy loves to award him there. So if Parasite was able to beat him and 1917 it was a very good sign.

I had heard, and it might have been on Unspooled or another one of the 500 movie related podcasts that I listen to, that Tarantino had to actually put together another version of the script to present for Awards consideration because what he wrote down was very vague this time and there was more improv. Do you think that is true and had something to do with why he wasn't awarded this year?
