  1. I think that in 2016, referencing musicals makes you way way way cooler than nu metal.

Thanks, that's what I thought. Well, I guess it's back to being super-cool for me then!

    Paul_soundchecking_bass.gif

Ok, mini-ep thread game (to build of of PlanB's question): Which HDTGM movie do you think would make a good musical?

Honestly, I think a Devil's Advocate musical could be pretty epic.

Also, if done in an updated Grease-type manner, the Fast & Furious movies could work. Think about it!

  2.

I thought that for some unknown reason you were making reference to early 2000s nu metal band Saliva. That is how ignorant I am on the subject of musicals.

Um...yeah. Which one makes me seem cooler? Because it's that one...

Pffft I can keep up with you on Broadway musicals and I still absolutely love football (and baseball and soccer).

Oh, I'm sure I can keep up with it, I just don't want to--I presume much to my father's chagrin. :) I do think hockey is kind of fun to watch though. I also enjoyed playing baseball and basketball when i was younger, and there was a time when players and stats and stuff mattered to me. I still have binders full of baseball cards at my house.

So maybe I should clarify, I think watching my son play soccer, baseball, or whatever would be a blast. It's the professional stuff that I could give a shit about.

    I'm a walking contradiction!

And that's good. People should broaden their areas of interests. It makes for better conversations.

Oh and congrats on 1,000 posts!

Oh, yeah. My wife's real proud.

You should have seen her shaking her head when Paul read my Streets of Fire thing...it's a real source of shame for her.

  3. Question for y'all:

Sometimes Hollywood gets accused of being creatively bankrupt, what with all the sequels, remakes, reboots, etc., but it seems that Broadway is no better, as they've taken some unusual films and made musicals out of them, and then some of THOSE have been turned BACK into movies. What films would you a) like to see turned into an unlikely musical and then B)/> turned into a musical movie? I'm going to start with "The Karate Kid". Can you IMAGINE the climactic performance of "The Best Round"?!?

    GO!

Great question! I actually think "Karate Kid" would be a great as a musical! I'll probably be putting a lot of thought into this over the next couple of hours, but the one that came to mind first, and this is a bit out of left field, but I think you could make a pretty good musical out of Rudy. Granted, the real-life Rudy is kind of a douche, but I'm a real sucker for underdog sports movies. Which is funny considering, I have exactly zero interest in sports in my real life--at least, watching them. I can't explain to you how tedious I find the idea of watching a game of football. For example, I think the Super Bowl may be this weekend...and if it is, I have no idea who's playing. Carolina, maybe? I mean, I really should have warned you all to brace yourselves. I know this all has to be extremely shocking coming from the guy who just 5 or 6 posts regarding a Broadway musical...

But, I think Rudy, as seen on film, has the correct plot trajectory, hits the right beats, and if done right, has the potential be something kind of cool.

  4. Fuck I love this musical so much!

Well, I'm not sure anyone else here cares as much as we do, but I'm with you. :D

After listening to it, I was also amazed at just how historically accurate it is--except for Aaron Burr, of course. By all accounts, Burr was, historically, even more of a piece of shit and totally unrepentant. But I like how Miranda manages to humanize him. His desperation when he says, "This man will not make an orphan of my daughter!" speaks so much truth to me. I can totally relate to him, at least on that level, when he is otherwise a cowardly, bag of crap.

This also happens to be my 1000th post! I couldn't be happier that I'm able to use it to praise this musical!

But, since this is my 1000th post, I believe that entitles me to recommend a totally unsolicited movie for HDTGM! To be honest, this is a big decision, and I haven't put that much thought into it. But, since musicals and Cannon films seem to be the order of the day, I would like to use this post to once again put forth Rockula, starring my hero and namesake, Dean Cameron!

  5. The way that Daveed sings as Jefferson with that air of narcissism is soooo fucking brilliant and just the way he goes "whaaaaat" when Madison recommends reaching out to Hamilton gets me every god damn time! Like the more I find out about Jefferson the more I despise him but Daveed makes me want to love him because he's so good at playing him!

Also the cabinet battles are amazing and how I now picture congress communicating with each other.

Oh, well if we're talking awesome character moments...

I love how King George's songs are all done in a kind of Brit-Pop pastiche. I particularly like in "I Know Him" his, "...John Adams?...That poor man, they're going to eat him alive."

I also love in "Stay Alive" the back and forth between Washington and Charles Lee of "Attack!/Retreat!" I'm not sure who does Charles Lee, but from his "I'm a General! Wheeeee!" forward he comes off as delightfully sniveling. It's flawless.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuX9MYkKUnI

Another great moment is after the Laurens/Lee duel, Washington's (relatively mild) rebuke of Hamilton in "Meet Me Inside" is met with "Call me 'son' one more time!" Holy shit. It's all so brilliant. He captures his characters so insanely good.

ETA: ....Oh, and I guess The Apple is pretty good too...

  6. FUCK! WHY DON'T I EVER ACTUALLY LOOK AT LOCATIONS!?

I was having a difficult time picking a favorite but then I was like "NOPE IT'S BURN!" and then I listen to that one alone 50 times on repeat before I go through the entire soundtrack again. I am just so in love with the Schuyler sisters!

Lin-Manuel must be a witch because I haven't been this captivated by a musical in yeeaaarrrsss

I one hundred percent agree! I'm not going to lie, I was driving when I was listening to the songs "Blow Us All Away," Stay Alive (Reprise)," and "It's Quiet Uptown" and straight up started bawling. lol I assume that has a lot to do with me being a father, but damn if that shit didn't hurt. And then, when it goes into "The Election of 1800" and they sing, "It might be nice, to have Hamilton on your side," I did a full-on fucking fist pump!

    God, it's so fucking awesome!

    Also, this song...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6j9Gk8kfKt4

Also, also, in regard to "Burn," I love the runner of her being a part of his narrative and how that's resolved at the end.

  7. Just to throw in a musical that's not currently a movie right now that I'm obsessed with - is anyone listening (or has anyone seen) Hamilton!? Seriously y'all I am o b s e s s e d!!!

Oh, fuck! Screw Chicago. Taylor Anne, where have you been?? Check out my location!!!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWdBOsk8D7A

I have been listening to it non-stop for about three weeks! I also posted "Yorktown" on the mini just ahead of Streets of Fire.

I am coming down on the side of crazy. Trying to put the setting in context it would be like if Suge Knight was the shadow power behind a totalitarian government controlling the country? And he made us pledge allegiance to Gin and Juice? Not pledge with the song. To the song.

But, but, but...what if the song is, like, really catchy?

I do hear what you're saying though...but if you're conceit is "let's do a disco musical with Judeo-Christian overtones" I think their take is just as valid as say, Godspell, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, or Jesus Christ Superstar. Maybe even moreso, as The Apple has the added benefit of writing in a commentary about commercialism, conformity, and fad culture. Although, maybe that's in those musicals as well, it's been years since I've seen either Godspell or JCS, and I've never seen JatATD, so maybe those greater points are there and I'm just speaking out of my ass.

And I do want to stress, I did not like The Apple, nor do I think it is in the same solar system as those other musicals in terms of quality. I'm just saying, to me, plot-wise, the premise doesn't seem much crazier than these or a number of other musicals I've seen.

I like the boards here, too. It's a standard forum layout.

I think some people prefer reddit because it groups conversations, but my problem with that is that it default sorts by popularity, so the more upvotes your comment has, the higher it appears, and I feel like it becomes a series of comments geared just to get upvotes rather than actual conversations. There are other reasons I'm not a huge reddit fan, but I'll keep my curmudgeonly attitude to myself.

Wow, I never knew that about Reddit. That does seem to be a piss poor way of having a meaningful conversation. I like this setup just because I feel like people are able to properly express themselves. Sometimes what one says is received warmly and sometimes it's not, but at least it doesn't foster an environment of, "What is the funniest thing I can say, right now?" or "What can I do so people will notice me?"

I always just assumed that Reddit was just a place where people could shout out Tourette's-like whatever silly thing is on their mind with no concern as to whether or not anyone is actually (honestly) engaging with them. It's the same reason I'm not on Facebook or Twitter. I get them as a tool for marketing and keeping in touch with friends and family, but other than that, I see them just as a soapbox to air out whatever inane thing that happens to be on a person's mind. I wouldn't even know what to do with a Twitter account if I had one. I harbor no illusions that people give a crap about anything I have to say, so I'm not going to foist myself on an uncaring populace.

And, yes, this is me being an old curmudgeon :)

  9. "But I'm finding that the earwolf forums kind of suck"

Yeah, that's weird to me. I have no trouble following a conversation on here, but then again, I'm here frequently enough that it's second nature. Maybe if I was exposed to other avenues online I'd feel the same way as Paul, but this place suits me down to the ground.

Also, I don't really have, nor do I plan on establishing, an online presence other than here, so maybe these forums are like pair of well-worn pajamas for me. I mean, I guess I still have an account over at WolfPop, which I primarily used to comment on The Sylvester Stallone Podcast, but I haven't been over there in forever. Now that's a forum set up I really couldn't get behind. It was really buggy. You couldn't edit (something I find I have to do--a lot) and I could never figure out how to attach a video or gif (the fucking HORROR!)

For comparisons sake, I just went over to Reddit, and everyone seems cool, but I found the whole design makes me want to scratch my eyes out.

Oh well, to each their own. I guess I have to accept that my tastes don't always align with our wonderful hosts. For instance, I started watching Gilmore Girls, and I do not get Jason's affection for that AT ALL! Although, I am still watching it...albeit with so much hate in my heart it ought to be a sin.

And speaking of sin...The Apple, am I alone in thinking it's not that crazy? Aside from the Mr. Topps thing at the end, which from I understand from iMDB was actually set up in a deleted scene, I found it pretty straight forward and kind of boring. I guess there's something to be said about the visuals, but the movie is highly stylized, so they didn't bother me all that much. As far as the plot, it's a very A to B type story. I guess I just prefer it when the plot of the movie is crazy other than just the way it looks...Or perhaps--and more likely--I am so inured to HDTGM movies at this point, nothing really phases me.

Anyway, I plan on re-watching it again with Rifftrax, which I already own, but I wanted to watch it on Prime to see if I could pick out anything for myself. To me, it's just a bad movie/musical with nothing too stand out about it.

  10. Hey Paul,

    Happy (belated) Birthday!

    giphy.gif

I hope June and your son did right by you!

    Two questions:

    1) What did you get?

    2) You share the same birthday as my father, are you--or have you ever been--my father?

Sincerely though, I hope you had a wonderful day!

  11. I just finished my re-listening spree of past HDTGM episodes. And just to be totally upfront, I'm not saying these would be good for the show, just that these are the movies that they have expressed interest in doing, but haven't done yet. Also, I started re-listening in reverse chronological order, until I hit Sleepaway Camp, and then I started from the beginning so that would be the last episode I listened to. I didn't start taking a note on the movies they mentioned until, I think, Winter's Tale, so there may be a bunch that I've missed.

Anyway, here are the newest batch:

Assassins--referred to as "the movie w/ Stallone and Julianne Moore" (Ep. 40 Judge Dredd)

    220px-Assassins_ver1.jpg

Jersey Girl and Southland Tales--Honestly, these were brought up in jest, but Kevin Smith sounded like he'd be down to do them, or at least admitted that they could be done. Also, Expendables 2 (Ep. 43 Wild Wild West)

    the-expendables-2-poster2.jpg

Elektra and X-men Origins: Wolverine (Ep. 46 Barb Wire)

    300px-Elektra.jpg

    X-Men-Origins-Wolverine-2009-poster.jpg

I also want to say during the Secret of the Ooze episode (or mini-episode), I think Paul said about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3 that they'd "get to it." However, it's been awhile since I listened to that episode, and I may be mis-remembering. But, fuck it. I'll include it.

  12. It's so quiet today!

Sorry, I've been diligently working on this really in-depth post about the music in Streets of Fire--particularly the opening and closing numbers. When I finally reveal who wrote them...well, let's just say, I think it's really going to turn some heads.

    It's Jim Steinman

  13. It was that Tyler Perry Movie that we made Scott watch but we switched to Sharknado

That's hilarious! I didn't discover the show until a while later (actually, I think I hopped aboard sometime just after Sharknado 2 dropped), so I always just assumed that was a bit and the intention was always to do Sharknado. I guess I really missed out on just how much of an impact Sharknado had on the world at the time...

    Whats the C&O?

Oh, it's so minuscule that I had to flip through my trade twice to find it (It was on the second page...). Actually, it might not even be a C&O now that I read it again.

The characters are playing a holo-game, and one of them yells, "It's a trap!" and someone responds with, "Thank you, Admiral Ackbar!" When I first read it, I have to say, I did take a second to think, "Would these guys--who live far enough into the future that interplanetary travel has become monotonous--still be making Star Wars references?" It just made me think of episodes like Pluto Nash and Barb Wire where you guys have questioned these same kinds of anachronistic references.

However, I do think I might have to withdraw my C&O anyway since, as I was flipping through, I caught a Shakespeare reference, and I thought, Well, we do still quote Shakespeare, don't we? Obviously, Paul is just placing Star Wars in its proper place next to the immortal works of The Bard.

Honestly, I probably wouldn't have even noticed it had you not been the writer. That probably just made me hyper aware of it.

Nick and I (My comic writing partner) wrote a few books for Marvel...It's been really fun. We'd love to write more independent books but right now we are focusing a new animated show for Adult Swim.

That sounds great! I'm looking forward to it. I missed your Deadpool issue, but I bought your Guardians Team-Up book (first floppy I've bought off the rack in about 8 years) and I thought it was really well done and a lot of fun.

  14. Calling out Cameron H.

    giphy.gif

I think your assessment is almost perfection...

    giphy.gif

Raven Shaddock isn't merely a poser; he is the ultimate anti-hero. A villain who wants nothing (a kiss). Think about it, his motivation is pure chaos in the face of unrivaled malaise. Why... Why I ask you would he be the villain in this picture:

    - Because he's ugly inside

    - Because he wears rubber pants.

    NO

    He is a greaser!

This film is a battering ram against greasers; the ultimate anti establishment symbol of the times.

The only problem? Greasers have the only interesting story to be tolled, no one wants a reverse Outsiders story!

The writers knew they'd chosen the boring side, and wrote any way... And write they did, WROTE AWAY, as if they could escape their insane premise.

They chose the wrong side when they started this screenplay, and payed the ultimate price: Boring characters with no purpose.

Raven is the clear hero... At least he kissed Diane Lane instead of punching her directly in the face.

This is a lot to process, and I may need to come back to it later when I'm a little more awake. I see where you're coming from, but I don't know if you're given Cody his due. To me, Cody is very Tom Joad-ish (hmmm...Tom Joad. Tom CODE-Y? Interesting...) which should have made him very compelling, and I don't think it's necessarily the character's fault that Pare couldn't deliver the goods.

But I agree, nobody wants a reverse Outsiders story. The thought of Johnny and Dallas raising from the grave just so they can see a movie at the drive-in would be downright ghoulish.

  15. Hey, Paul!

I hate to be that guy that bombards you with a ton of questions, but I thought of a few others--the first of which is more "you" related than "show" related, so I hope I'm not over stepping my bounds...

    1) I'm sorry if this comes off as pandering, but is there any hope for an Aliens vs Parker follow-up? If not, have you thought of doing any more creator owned comic work? I read the TPB of Aliens vs. Parker about a year ago, and loved it! You have a real knack for writing and I'd really enjoy reading more. Although, if I may be so bold, I did catch one tiny C&O worthy thing in it. Not a big deal or anything, but I thought it was funny considering it was something you've called people out for on the show. ;)

    2) After an episode has been released, and you run into someone who might have been involved with a movie you've covered, how is it typically received? Has anyone ever been super pissed, or do most people take it for the good-natured fun that it is? Have you ever been surprised by someone's take on the show? Obviously, any specifics are at your discretion.

  16. Hey Everyone

Just saw these comments. Just wanted to add my two cents.

1.) Blake has never dictated an article. I always pick movies with Avaryl (Movie Bitches) and Nate - they often have seen them before and we try to find stuff that will breed an interesting conversation and be fun and different. But back to Blake after the movie is picked I tell him what we are doing. His approval isn't a consideration for me. Truly it's not. Sometimes he can't get that many people from the films like Death Spa and FF.

2.) These are companion pieces that are posted on a film site - if you really wanted to hear some inside stories - you can read them. But they aren't exclusive to enjoying the show. I think they are fun to read but it's not a must and you aren't missing anything if you don't. It's like a DVD commentary track - if you choose to listen you can but you don't have to. I don't.

3.) The mini eps and the articles are purely separate, I like reading a little something from them at the top of the mini but it's just a about a minute. What I pick to read in a mini has NOTHING to do with what was or was not covered in Blake's article. I think once or twice I've joked shamed people and sometimes I know that a thoroughly researched answer is in the article and I'll point to it. But that's it. I'm pretty much a one man band and combing through pages and pages of posts - I definitely gravitate to ones that have really crazy theories and point a finger at stuff we missed or talk about something that I didn't realize. Backstage stuff is less interesting to me unless it's really mindblowing. I just think the other types of posts are more entertaining. Also I try to pass the ball a bit and not read 3 posts from the same person. Most people aren't on the board, I try to make the minis engaging for those who don't post and if they are interested they can read themselves.

4.) Re: Canon Films. I think they are fun. We aren't doing them exclusively. We try to move it around and we get into different territories. For awhile people were upset with 80's movies. So we movies to 90's for 2. Now we are

Going to musicals for 2. We just find what's the most fun and chase it down. Same reason we picked Star Wars because it was something different and it seemed right.

I love feedback. I love that you all listen and I'm bummed I almost missed this. Maybe I should set up a forum just for questions and maybe figure out how to get a vote system started for movies.

    Thanks for this all.

Wow, thank you Paul for posting this! I honestly just brought it up as a discussion topic as a means to keep the boards active between main episodes and I certainly meant no disrespect to either you, your wonderful interns, or Blake. Frankly, I think most of us take our public mini episode shaming as a badge of honor. I for one have no qualm with getting shouted down as I'm usually just glad if you or Nate find anything I have to say even remotely interesting and worthy to be read.

I agree Cannon films can be fun--in small doses.

Sincerely, I love the show, not just for the content, but for the fun place it provides for me to go and waste my time with like minded people as I aggressively underachieve at a dead end job. :)

I would love it if there were a place where we could go and ask you questions, although I would suggest you set some limits as to what types of questions you're looking for. Otherwise you're going to get a flood of dumb-dumbs asking you when you guys are going to do such-and-such movie.

As far as voting is concerned, I'm torn by that. Personally, I think you guys do a fantastic job picking them for us. Maybe if, like, options were provided? Otherwise, you'll be doing crap like The Phantom Menace, and Lord knows that's one dead horse that doesn't need any more beating. Most of all, I just want this to remain fun for you, Jason, and June. As much as I didn't like the idea of Blake steering the ship, I don't really want us to do that either. Nobody wants you guys to burn out.

Thanks again! We love to hear from you as well!

  17.

I was thinking about this, and if it had been a rock opera adaptation of the Iliad it would have much more interesting. I would like to have seen them deal with a "cyclops" figure and "sirens" etc.

Um...actually, I believe you are confusing The Iliad with The Odyssey. I'm sure it was an honest mistake...
