  1. For the curious:

He's probably talking about the comments on BirthMoviesDeath; we all know the Earwolf commenters have well reasoned, articulate opinions which make perfect sense.

Yeah. I saw that, and it was disheartening. I really liked what people had to say on those subjects, even if I didn't totally agree with some of them.

  2. Pretty sure remake would take this one. I'd vote that way for sure. Although if the remake were a solo episode, I'd be hesitant just because I wonder how many Scorcese/DeNiro we NEED in the Canon. It's an excellent movie, they're ALL excellent movies. But I feel like if the project of the Canon is to make a viewing list for people who want to know about film, I wouldn't show them 5 movies from the same actor/director combo.

This. I like both Capes Fear, but I don't believe either are particularly canon-worthy. I'd love to hear the arguments.

  3.

And keep in mind, Zodiac is one of Devin's all-time favourites. It wouldn't be an evenly handed episode.

If Zodiac did make it in, I couldn't be mad. It is, without a doubt, one of the greatest films of all time. It's a film that I love a lot, and couldn't be too upset if it made it in over Memories of Murder.

    Mother > Memories of Murder

But that's like saying 14-year Laphroaig is better than 12-year. I honestly do believe it's his best, though.

Same as above. All of Bong's films are great. I certainly prefer Memories of Murder, but I can't even be annoyed or defensive at thinking Mother is better, because it's so damn good.

  4. I may get dragged over the coals for this but...

I think Jim Carrey might have been miscast

Well, it took him forever to find roles where he wasn't Jim Carreying the whole time. That said, Jim Carrey--especially at the time--brings a likability and celebrity that I don't know would have worked with anyone else.

  5.

Now "Memories of Murder" would be one hell of an interesting Canon episode.

Memories of Murder is one of my five favorite films. The obvious choice is to do that in a versus with Zodiac, but I'd hate having to do that. Bong Joon-ho deserves to be in the canon, and all of his films are worthy. Memories of Murder, next to Snowpiercer, is probably his strongest bet.

  6. Amy is great. However when she assures Devin and us that she "gets it"--"it" being the film in question--sometimes, *just sometimes*...I feel like she doesn't get it.

What does that even mean, anyway? That if Amy doesn't like something that she just doesn't understand it? I mean, I can't imagine anyone getting it more than Amy--as often as I disagree with her--but it's possible she gets it and still doesn't care for the movie.

  7. I agree, but picking which one would be a helluva task. The Hallows' put together? Sorcerer's Stone? Often-said-to-be-peak Prisoner of Azkaban?

Arguing about the entire damn thing, now that'd be interesting. It's difficult to deny that Harry Potter has to enter one way or another, but asking future Canonologists to watch all 20 or so hours, whether they give a damn about the story? Potentially a dealbreaker for a lot of people. But does any one installment encapsulate the series enough on its own to warrant singular induction? I'd be inclined to stump for Sorcerer's for posterity and delight or Azkaban for damned-goodness, or else, hell with it, all of em, myself.

You know, the first one might actually have to be the one. Personally, I'd go with Prisoner of Azkaban or Deathly Hallows Pt. I. I think those are the strongest films in the series. That said, Sorcerer's Stone has the most in terms of world-building and setting a tone for the whole series.

  8. My mom is a John Cusack person. So, she'd pick Better Off Dead..., which is her all-time favorite film. Personally, I think it's awesome. It's a terrific absurdist romantic comedy with a terrific performance from Cusack. Say Anything... is great as well.

  9. That said, I'd like to ask the public at large what you guys would think about a Harry Potter film in the canon? Devin is too old to sop over this particular fandom, the series is clearly influential on the culture, the modern blockbuster and "cinematic universes" in an important way but it's also clear that the importance of the series is more from fans of the books than the quality of the film.

I think it would end up being a Wrath of Khan argument, but with Devin and Amy switching sides.

Devin loves Harry Potter, so I don't know if that's quite true. Personally, I've been asking for a Harry Potter episode since the old forums. 100% it deserves an episode, and, for my money, canonization.

  10. I want so badly to side with Amy and to vote no. I can't. The significance is enormous. As someone who is a late millennial that loves TOS, I have no love for Wrath of Khan. I can appreciate Dave and Devin's arguments, and I see where they're coming from, but there's no passion for me here.

More than anything, I'm really fatigued by genre episodes like this, even though I've voted for most of them--if not all of them--to be canonized. I get it. If every pork chop was perfect, we wouldn't have Re-Animator hot dogs. With that in mind, I'm ready to do some stuffy, older, artier films. If we could do that, maybe I'm alone on this, but I think that would be super neat.

  11. One shot for a yellow scarf comment from Amy, two if Devin calls it out.

One shot when Devin predicts the forum response of an episode.

One shot for every Pauline Kael reference--out of reverence.

One shot for every time Devin smacks Roger Ebert--as an amen.

One shot for every time Devin calls something out for being one of the all-time greats, or all-time worsts of some trope of film.

One shot for when Amy is called on to defend A Million Ways to Die in the West.

Get-Out-of-Shot-Free whenever engineer Sam pops in.

  12. I don't know if Amy and Devin want to poll this in any particular way, but if only to get a feel for where this is going to head. As our perceptions and listenership changes, so do our definitions of the canon. Approaching 100 episodes of this series, which picture least adheres to acceptable levels of canonocity? What films just need to be ejected from the canon?

  13. (I also think the movie that most echoes it in our current film scene, Nightcrawler, would still be a great canon choice, partly because it divorces Lou Bloom's work from his personality, and partly because Gyllenhaal's youth by comparison heightens the tension that some day he might be running it all. These are distinct movies for sure, and I hope people don't get reductive in the thread about that fact!)

That was my thing. This is the film that makes Nightcrawler happen. Louis Bloom is Rupert Pupkin's son, and Rene Russo's character is Cathy Long grown up, punished with years of Pupkins and Blooms.

Also, Schrader has confirmed the end of Taxi Driver as a dream. Maybe it isn't to Scorsese--though, I'm pretty sure he has said it is as well. But I think that makes sense as a dream.

  14. In the Mood for Love is a quiet and magical romance that is bursting with beauty, yet is so intimate and real. There's never a dull moment. Let's forget the pacing, the dreamlike storytelling, the ingenious cinematography, etc. Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung alone are so gorgeous, and have such chemistry with one another, that their dynamic alone could carry this film.

So, no. This is not overrated. One of you is completely wrong.

  15.

Toy Story: Good at the time, sucks compared to the sequels. Not that influential. All non-Pixar films after 2001 patterned themselves after Shrek. Shrek is the most influential CGI animated film. Even if you don't like it, it's true.

Except Shrek doesn't exist without Toy Story, or even Luxo Jr. So, I don't know if that holds up.
