Episode 134 - Can't Stop the Music: LIVE!

Uh-oh. This is what I thought of this morning when there was nothing. But Smigg is right, Paul seems too nice to treat us like unruly children. ... That is why it's late. Because Jason is going to do it. WELL IF THEY'RE GOING TO ACT LIKE IT!!!

I like to imagine the person on Reddit who said we agreed with him was the same person in this thread who used "Reddit agrees with me" as an argument. It's a fun circular way of not ever coming up with points to defend your position. You're definitely in on the group hug. Edited to Add: Bless FresherPie, the only newbie here to actually talk about the movie. Way to restore my hope in humanity.

What if everytime we saw someone wearing a shirt that said "Never Forget" we were just like, "Yeah, man, that was an amazing thread." ... I'd like to think Jason would be proud. ETA: I just realized I'd totally get punched in the face by the firemen near me. They have a memorial outside their firehouse. Nevermind. Don't hurt me, firemen. But, back on topic, how come there isn't a fireman in the Village People?!? This seems like a huge oversight!

Gosh I'm so behind the times. I only just heard about Prince. 2016 has been rough. But I don't think it's out to get us because--never forget--it was the year this glorious sentence was typed:

I'm surprised so many men HAVE been President since we know dicks are the most useless. (Cameron totally won that debate; Pete agreed.)

Oh hmm. Maybe you guys are right. What do I know? Jason, if you are out there, please create a fake account that tells us we are all dumb dumbs and jerks. Edited: Also, please get me into the Vulture Festival show. I don't want to brag, but I have tits.

Episode 134 - Can't Stop the Music: LIVE!

Yes it was during Vulture Fest (which Earwolf is a sponsor of). On May 21-22 of this year, so pretty soon. Tickets were $40 and, like, there was also a Jessica Jones/Netflix panel that was FREE (also sold out; no joy for me at all). So I was like, "Wow. HDTGM is a hot ticket!" Some of the other stuff still has tickets avail: http://vulturefestival.com/ Including another podcast with Paul Scheer as the guest. ETA: No, no, no. June doesn't read the threads. Honestly, not that she's dumb, but I'd be surprised she knows they exist. She's got shows to tape and babies to raise! I don't think Jason does either. I know he mentioned the controversy over the new theme song but I think that was just what someone told him. (Though your theory would be amazing. I just don't get the sense that he's much of an internet person.) Paul only does sometimes. I meant when they do the dramatic reading of this thread.

Ugh! I wanted to go. I only ever got tickets for the NYC live show they cancelled. And this one sold out before I had a chance to get to the page. Stupid work, getting in the way of my podcast attendance. I'm really bummed, you guys. FEEL BADLY FOR ME!!!! I think the fact that we've never met and you're having a baby with another woman is really going to help Paul and June keep it in their pants for once when they read this thread. (And finally address the EPIC COCONUT CONTROVERSY!)

What other food could we fight about? Oh I know... Controversial opinion: I don't like 'em. The peanut butter to candy ratio is all off. Much prefer a peanut butter cup. Yeah that's right, I said it. And all of you trying to SHAME ME for my opinion. Guess what? Reddit agrees with me.

Episode 134 - Can't Stop the Music: LIVE!

Oh since we're talking about the movie (again? for the first time?), now I remember a correction/omission I had thought of earlier: Throughout the episode the pronoun "he" is used to refer to the director, except for the one time Paul first brings the director up. The director was actually a woman: Nancy Walker. Walker is better known as an actress. She had her own show, "The Nancy Walker Show" in the 70s and played Ida Morgenstern on "Rhoda." As far as I can tell, "Can't Stop the Music" is the only feature she directed though she also did episodes of "Alice" and "Mary Tyler Moore." I think the panel didn't know she was a woman because, statistically, it's rare for a woman to direct a feature film. I remember seeing a news article that a studio (I think it was Fox?) announced it's slate up until 2018 and didn't have a single female director attached to any project. Here's a Variety article about the lack of female directors: http://variety.com/2...era-1201626691/ Anyway! This movie was produced by gay men and directed by a woman. It's so progressive I'm saving money on car insurance! ETA: *jason voice* WHAT?!? I'm done with you, bro.

Episode 134 - Can't Stop the Music: LIVE!

Not just you. I hate coconut. I also don't really like the flavor but the consistency is what kills it. "Can't Stop the Nuts" kind of sounds disgusting to me. This is why Ben and Jerry are more famous, Baskin Robbins. Random fact! Wikipedia told me that "David London" is a stage name for Dennis Frederiksen, who also sang with Survivor ("Eye of the Tiger") and Toto ("Africa"). https://en.wikipedia...nis_Frederiksen He did sing backup on the "Eye of the Tiger" album so maybe it's him doing the BLAM. BLAM. BLAM. BLAMs? He also performed as "Fergie" for awhile before Stacy Ferguson ruined that for him with her obsession with spelling. Also, did anyone else expect all the Village People to show up in the roller skating opening? Because the Construction Worker does. So I was like, "Oh the cop will be directing traffic at one point.... but how will they fit the Native American in...?" NOPE. Just the Construction Worker. Why did he get placement in that and no one else? Or did I miss them? (Thanks to Gotta Love the Gute for the video!)

Oh I go away for awhile and miss actual good posts. Congrats!! My mom chose a name from a fictional character that she liked thought I wouldn't say I am named after that person; she just thought "oh that's a nice name." So, though I like the literary allusion of Hunter, I think you should name him after your favorite Village Person. Or maybe Gute. Think about it. "the Leatherman H." Also I was a multiple birth and a dumb nurse thought there were three of us instead of two so my mom came up with a third name. So now she jokes my ass is called Mary Ann.

Episode 134 - Can't Stop the Music: LIVE!

I just went to the Village People website (I feel like I've been to a lot of websites I never thought I would've in the last few days) and he is officially listed as the "Native American Indian" which is... confusing. But also means the various panelists calling him the "Native American" and the "Indian" are all technically correct. I feel like I should be mention here that Felipe Rose, who still plays the character and is also the guy in the movie, is half-Lakota Sioux and half-Puerto Rican. So while the costume is over-the-top and could be offensive to some (the bells annoy me and Jason, for sure), but I also think he should be able to self identify as whatever he wants? Shrug. It still would've been funny if he chose to be the Reindeer though.

    Solarbabies (1986)

I have to watch this now. I see Peter DeLuise is in it. Loved him in 21 Jump Street. (Johnny Depp was too pretty.)

Episode 134 - Can't Stop the Music: LIVE!

Probably because most of the replies have nothing to do with the movie. I feel bad for whoever has to read this thread for corrections and omissions. It's funny that disco was so "done" when this came out because "The Apple" and "Xanadu" both came out the same year. So Hollywood is clearly on-trend. Also congrats to HDTGM for covering all three. Hat trick! High fives all around.

I just watched the trailer again and that is indeed how they pronounce it. I'm sad the Slashfilm article doesn't solve the mystery of the cop's girlfriend on set. But I did get to read about Steve Guttenberg possibly being sexually harassed by the producer. So, like that happened.

Episode 134 - Can't Stop the Music: LIVE!

That's true. My mother was like two years older than my dad when they got married in '78 and it was almost a secret. Maybe because we're used to May-December romances going the other way (your gross fat Henry VIII's marrying teenagers?). But six years wouldn't seem like that big of a deal to me today, unless they were under 30. When you're in college or high school, dating someone a grade up is like "oooooh! Scandal!" That's what I think was funny about it. Morali was a producer on the film so I imagine him saying, "LET'S MAKE THIS MORE ABOUT ME. THESE GUYS ARE INSIGNIFICANT!" But obviously what you'd be going to see was the Village People. None of them really have an arc though. They are almost props.

Episode 134 - Can't Stop the Music: LIVE!

I wonder if the cop is like "how many girlfriends do I have to bring to set before people stop asking this?" I can't tell if this is a serious question or not since Paul did address it in the show? But we know for sure that neither the original cop (Victor Willis) nor the cop in the movie (Ray Simpson) are gay. Google says the Leatherman isn't gay but I believe it means the current Leatherman? Glenn Hughes, the Leatherman in the film, passed away. At least 22 people have played the various roles in the Village People over the years so it's a bit difficult to speculate about the sexuality of all of them. But I think the main point is that they were founded by a gay man who purposefully created a group to reflect gay subculture. So it is weird that the film never uses the word "gay" and has fake female love interests for some of the guys. I don't really think HDTGM glossed over that fact, because Cameron and Jason talk about it specifically at about 23 minutes into the podcast, but perhaps not as in depth as the imdb thread.

Episode 134 - Can't Stop the Music: LIVE!

Nope, I thought so too. Like you guys discussing why she might get paid less than her are making me laugh because it's a free podcast; none of them are getting paid. I also feel like she was brought on purposefully to be the "professional gay." Otherwise, again, it's straight guys making fun of a gay movie and could be seen as gay bashing. They had her as a guest for a reason. And I think she leaned into it in a "yes and" exaggerated way.
