    Holy Precognition!

William Gibson wrote the screenplay based on his own story. and he is a pretty good futurist writer still. I highly recommend his recent trilogy starting with Pattern Recognition, and the one he is currently writing starting with The Peripheral.

    Episode 253.5 - Minisode 253.5

Branagh's Hamlet set an impossibly high bar I think, including for himself. I can't think of a better film version of Shakespeare. As for Emma Thompson, she is every bit as talented as Branagh, and I feel it unnecessary to take sides over their long-ended relationship. It's a shame that their personal relationship ended in a way that they felt no longer able to work together.

Sounds like everyone has forgotten Mel Gibson's Hamlet. This made me curious so I went googling bad Shakespeare adaptations and this page has some pretty interesting suggestions, most of which I had not heard of (Cymbeline? Also with Ethan Hawke?).

    Episode 253. Cats

I have nothing to add, just loved everything about this.
  5. Hello. You may remember me from such posts as "here is some Canadian trivia related to this week's movie" or "I'm baked and I could still make a better movie than this!" You may also recall that even though I'm part of the queer community, I watch a lot (I mean, a LOT) of Hallmark-style low budget made for TV romcoms. When my also queer friend Nicole discovered this, she proposed that we do a podcast about them in a very unusual format: an advent calendar. So since late October, we have been feverishly watching, making notes, and recording episodes of A Podcast in a Queer Tree, which will air a new episode every day in December up to and including the 25th. We have something like 10 episodes left to record and I have a ton of editing left to do but we are on track to get it all done. You can check out our still-in-progress website or check out our Patreon, where the episodes will be hosted. We will have no sponsors and there is no charge to listen to the main episodes. We're basically just doing it for fun and experience and to add a little cheer to our (and hopefully your) holidays. There is a short intro episode available if you need further convincing. Hope you enjoy. xo PS- we also made bingo cards thanks to some maniac online who has a script that generates bingo cards. So enjoy that.

    Episode 252.5 - Minisode 252.5

As a publisher I deal with one of the many companies that Amazon has purchased (CreateSpace) to publish my books both in print and to their kindle store. I expect there are several similar companies for distributing independent films, music, clips, etc. I would literally rather eat my own balls than watch this movie. Looking forward to the episode.

    Episode 252 - Governor Gabbi

Ah man, I must look that up, I always enjoyed Prez (who also appeared here and there in the Sandman-era Vertigo titles) but I haven't read Russell's book. Loved his Flintstones title, very smart stuff. There were so many short-lived and one-shot superhero comics in the early to mid 70s. There used to be a DC fanzine or internal publication called Cancelled Comics Cavalcade where they would run pages of issues from comics that had been drawn but then got cancelled without publishing the issue in colour. My favourite Crazy Joe Simon Idea from then was the Green Team, a friendly quartet of millionaires who wore jumpsuits covered in pockets containing bundles of cash. They would just kind of roll up and solve every problem with money.

    Episode 252 - Governor Gabbi

I don't know if I misunderstood some news story that I saw yesterday, but is this what happens with the US senate? One of my exes was a baker who went to culinary school. It's considered a specialty, so depending on the school you would all learn a basic kind of foundational course and then if you wanted to pursue baking as a "major" I guess your graduation would include the certification of being a baker, which depending on where you live or work, can be a unionized position with pay bands. Of course, much like other kinds of post-secondary education, the value of culinary school is debatable, as the late Anthony Bourdain and others liked to say. It's perfectly possible to become a great chef or baker without going to culinary school at all, but going there could give you some useful techniques, experiences in cooking situations you might not normally encounter on your own (eg., cooking for large events), and industry contacts.

Do people want HDTGM to do another live episode?

Absolutely. Didn't do the first because I can't stand the musical Cats, but generally I'd be up for most anything.

I have not watched this movie and probably won't, but I laughed hard at Jason saying "And then HARD CUT: She's wearing a fedora!" Thank you.

    Episode 186 - Geostorm: LIVE!

Watching it now on Showcase here in Canada. Probably my 5th or 6th time. Feels a little extra relevant in 2020. GEOSTORM!!

    Episode 250.5 — Minisode 250.5

Great talk with Jason about the long tail of Covid. Eternally grateful to be living where I am but deeply sad for my American friends (which frankly I have been for decades, but especially now). I highly recommend Andy Slavitt's podcast In The Bubble, he has medical experts on regularly to assess the current state of the pandemic and the US response.

Haha, congrats on your win Cameron, well deserved. Man, great opening theme this week. And that Geostorm story is amazing. Thank you for your service. Breakin' 2! Wow.

Can you edit the topic title, @Cameron H.? Got a stray 6 there that should be a 5. I hate when that happens!

Ep 250 — Under the Cherry Moon

Purple Rain is the best of all Prince movies because it also has Morris Day and the Time.

Ep 250 — Under the Cherry Moon

Ever since Russell Crowe pointed this out in an interview (referring to Tom Cruise), that has always been a benchmark for me - is an actor willing to look like the bad guy or be unlikeable to the audience? That's the difference (or a difference) between an actor and a star.

Ep 250 — Under the Cherry Moon

This has been really interesting to listen to. I haven't seen the film since it came out (and like most people at the time I thought it was awful) but I do have a deep and abiding love for Prince. Hearing them talk about how Prince was always recording and wanted to release a lot more music reminds me of Frank Zappa, which in turn reminds me of the great Zappa biography called The Negative Dialectics of Poodle Play. In that book, the writer examines everything that Zappa released in chronological order, explaining each song and film and composition and then explaining how it all fits into a lifelong project. I feel that Prince's life is a very similar lifelong project situation. That "record store" scene reminds me of the weird scene in Fast 7(?) where they go shopping for cars and make a posh guy take his shirt off.

Musical Mondays Week 102 A Mighty Wind

My dream job is production design on stuff like these album covers or the made-up computer interfaces that they use in movies. My favourite of which is probably the vampire scroll decoding app that someone happened to have in one of the Blade movies, I think. Anyone else reminded of Alice Cooper's Flush The Fashion with that Cry for Help album cover? Edited to add a fun fact: the late Phil Hartman used to design album covers in the 70s, including for bands like America. He basically had Michael Beck's job from Xanadu.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (Charity Episode)

It's too bad you didn't know me in the 90s, I had a friend in Seattle who loved the show so I sent her a box of Reboot action figures when they went on clearance. Wish I had kept a few for myself! Or at least the PS1 game.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (Charity Episode)

Well my friend, you can buy the entire series on DVD from Shout! factory: https://www.shoutfactory.com/product/reboot-the-definitive-mainframe-edition?product_id=1567 Or apparently it is on Prime video in the US and Crave here in the Canadas. There is also a terrible looking new live action series called The Guardian Code on Netflix, I have not managed to get through an episode of it yet but I guess I haven't tried very hard either.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (Charity Episode)

Hi! Welcome, and thanks for all that. I am somewhat familiar with the history of Transformers having lived through it (born in 1968); I was not a fan of the original show (too old for it by then I suppose) but I feel like I have been a big fan of some stuff that is related to it one way or another. For example Marvel's comics adaptation of The Micronauts, a toy line called Microman in Japan that I think is considered to be the source of the shapeshifting cars/vehicles? Anyway, in that series writer Bill Mantlo (probably best known now for creating Rocket Raccoon) created a mythology for those toys and created some new characters to throw in with them. Marvel did a lot of toy-related series in the late 70s and early 80s including Team America, Go Bots, GI Joe, Rom, and Shogun Warriors, to varying degrees of success. The other thing I loved was Mainframe animation - they are the company who worked on Beast Wars (not sure if they also did Beast Machines) and I think BW was probably their most lucrative work apart from some Barbie films. I love their series called Reboot, especially the latter two seasons where they got some comics writers like Len Wein in to create some sharp episodes lampooning stuff like The Evil Dead and The Prisoner.

Musical Mondays Week 102 A Mighty Wind

That has always been pretty much my impression of the film as well - baby boomers stuck in the past, oblivious or just not caring how the world has passed them by. And while I get that comparisons to Spinal Tap are inevitable given that a lot of the same people are in both movies, it's also important to remember that a lot of the energy and appearance of the earlier film is down to Rob Reiner as a director.
